A message from the Principal

A very warm welcome back to our entire Shailer Park SHS community. It was a tricky start to the year, yet this seemed to only enhance the sense of happiness and relief we all felt finally being back together on campus.

It is clear as I walk between our classrooms, that everyone is motivated to make the most of Term 1. We also welcomed over 200 new Year 7 students into our school. What a wonderful demonstration of just how strong public confidence is in everything we do here at Shailer Park SHS!

Late in 2021, we had the pleasure of seeing our graduating Year 12 students continue to achieve Bright Futures. I am so pleased with their achievements, something our entire community can be proud of!

  • 44% of our 2021 Graduates were University bound and currently 70% of these eligible students have been offered a first or second university preference via QTAC.

The remainder of our students are on the following pathways.

  • 26% Apprenticeships or Traineeships
  • 12% Further Education (Certificate / Diplomas)
  • 14% Employment
  • 4% Defence Forces

The Shailer Park SHS chapter is over for our 2021 Year 12s, but the positive habits they have developed, and their understanding of just what is needed every day to turn on their smart brains will keep them in good stead beyond Shailer Park SHS. After a long holiday, it is very important to help our current students get into those habits again; only then, can we really support them to ‘cross the line of opportunity’ each day. Fostering positive routines and habits for sleep, eating, managing distractions such as phones and packing a healthy lunch, are all ways they can turn on their smart brain.

Nurturing a general sense of wellbeing is also crucial to achieving those Big Plans and Bold Ambitions. Feeding our brain with experiences which create wonder, positivity, a sense of safety and joy will help develop a happier, more resilient child. Unfortunately, there is an overwhelming amount of stimulus available on television, social media, and the like regarding the pandemic which, when not managed, can create stress and anxiety for young people.

I remember being a teenager and feeling (and acting!) very annoyed because I had missed out on something with my friends, and instead was at a family gathering: as an adolescent, it felt like the end of the world! One of my uncles had noticed, turned to me, and said he was going to give me a memory quiz. He asked me to look around the room and remember 15 items coloured blue, and then to close my eyes. I was ready to list off all the blue things, when he said, ‘Now, tell me just 5 items coloured green.’ I was stumped, but the lesson was clear. I had been concentrating on that one negative and allowed it to colour my entire afternoon, instead of taking notice of the wonderful things around me.

When we constantly think, engage with, and talk about negative issues like the pandemic, it can colour all the other wonderful, positive aspects in our lives. As parents, we are our children’s first role models: we need to make a conscious effort to help our young people see the world as positive, hopeful, and full of optimism. All around us, there are ideas and experiences which can lift us up.

Albert Einstein once said that “The most beautiful experience in the world is the experience of the mysterious.” In other words, experiencing something new helps develop our passion for life, our wellbeing. And this doesn’t have to be anything expensive or overly time consuming. How often do you deliberately pause and look for beauty around you? In the garden, a mural, the clouds? When was the last time you explored different activities or hobbies? Tried a new recipe? Engaged with a personal talent or passion, or even just sat down to a novel, music or theatre and allowed yourself to be intrigued, even if it was to think ‘What was all that about’?

When students experience amazement with what they are learning (and remember, they’re learning all the time, not just at school), we help them make sense of the world around them and develop their sense of exuberance and joy in life itself. Fostering a habit of wonderment and awe requires some effort, but as adults we can model delight in learning something new…

Stop and take notice of the blooming flower or pink sunset. Laugh at ourselves as we try something new or discuss what we liked about a new experience. Simply paying attention to the many incredible things that are happening around us each day helps develop that very important habit of finding wonder in every day. And it will increase our own sense of wellbeing and contribute to a more positive outlook on life in general.

Put the news app down and try it, I guarantee your mood will lift immediately!

A message from our Senior Schooling Deputy Principal

Welcome to all of our new and continuing senior school students and parents for 2022.

It’s always an exciting time for our new Year 10s as they don their crisp, new white formal shirt and tie and begin the final phase of their 13 year schooling journey. Rest assured that Shailer Park State High has a strong tradition of supporting and guiding our seniors through to their final graduation with a caring team of adults surrounding them.

A sudden change to the way we started the year has meant that we have all had to lean into our 4Rs. Resilience was required to start the year in a different way of working with new teachers. We had to be relational in an online platform which can be challenging to say the least. We have had to be resourceful to ensure we have out devices and Showbie codes and can connect with our teachers. And we have had to be reflective as we all strive to do better and be better in yet another year that presents us with some unknowns and uncertainty. Please rest assured that as a senior schooling team we are throwing everything we must ensuring our seniors will be provided with the highest level of academic and well-being support no matter what comes our way. But with that support also comes some commitment from our students. We ask of our students; how will you own your own learning this year? Because we can do everything possible as parents and educators to provide the best conditions for learning but without drive and agency from the student it will never have the impact we hope for.

So, my advice as we start the year to parents of senior students (having been one myself not so long ago) is to communicate often with your adolescent who is verging on adulthood. Continue to set boundaries to help them with making good choices. Encourage a simple and consistent study routine and ensure that they are eating well and getting at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

Studies show that adolescents who have parents who are present, parents who ask questions and listen, parents who are ok to say ‘no’ and set boundaries, are more likely to get to the end of Year 12 with far less stress and anxiety.

We live in an uncertain world. Let’s do our best to provide stability and certainty where we can.

My mission as Senior Schooling Deputy is to partner with families to ensure that our students are getting the best results they can and leading into pathways that will be fulfilling now and into their futures outside of Shailer Park State High.

This semester we will be running some information sessions on the below topics.

  • ATAR
  • QCE
  • Organising my study time
  • Using drafting and feedback effectively
  • Future pathways

Please let me know via email (kryan30@eq.edu.au) if there is anything else that you would like me to include. The format of these will either be face to face or as a pre-recorded You Tubes depending on COVID mandates.

There is also a wealth of information in the QCAA (Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority) website for parents and families regarding Senior Secondary.

Year 12 Badging Ceremony

Each year our Year 12 cohort step into the role of being the leaders of the student body. We recently held our ceremony where students recited the Senior Leadership Pledge and received a Year 12 Leader badge.

We, the Year 12 Students of 2022, pledge commitment to our school community and to being student leaders that will uphold the values of Shailer Park State High School.

We will lift our aspirations through big plans and bold ambitions for a brighter future.

We understand and accept our role to uphold the school values of being relational, resourceful, reflective and resilient students.

We accept the challenges of being a leader at Shailer Park State High School, and commit to fulfilling these roles, setting the standard for all students, and leading the way in being the best that we can be.

Senior Performance Team

Our Senior Performance Team continue to meet weekly to ensure that every senior student is on track and has the support required to fulfil their Big Plans and Bold Ambitions. Over the next few weeks, I will be meeting with students and parents who may be at risk of not getting their QCE to ensure that they are on the right pathway and getting the support that they need for a Bright Future.

Please feel free to contact the office and organise a meeting with me if you ever have any concerns regarding your child’s academic progress.

Here’s to an exciting 2022!

A message from our Junior Schooling Deputy Principal

Welcome to the 2022 School Year!

It is always wonderful to see new students arrive at our school gates, particularly at the start of each school year. Their new uniforms, shoes, school bags and equipment almost sparkle as they enter the schoolyard and classrooms. A new school year is also wrapped in a great sense of excitement, possibly even nervousness, especially for our new Year 7 students and their parents. Starting high school is the start of their next big adventure with many new possibilities and options. Some new Year 7 students may feel a little nervous about their first few weeks of school. That is totally normal and many of your classmates will be feeling the same. Just remember to be yourself and embrace the changes ahead of you.

Year 8 and Year 9 students often return with a more relaxed sense of familiarity and routine. Sometimes it is hard to believe that only a year ago, they also felt this nervous excitedness. For Year 8 students, they also have the added responsibility of a change to the end of their school day (at 1.20pm) on Monday afternoons. All Year 7 students remain at school for the UPLIFT Program until 2.55pm.

In Term 1 2022, however, we are reviewing the targeted support programs that are offered on Monday afternoons for Year 8 and 9 students. This is a work in progress and is not expected to start until Term 2. Additional to this, the first three Mondays of Term 2 are public holidays. Consequently, we are not expecting to send these invitations for these targeted support programs until later in Term 1. Due to the length of time since these programs have been offered, we will call and email each parent/carer of invited students to ensure they are aware of this important invitation for Term 2.

Despite the delayed start, our Year 7, 8 and 9 students have quickly swung into the school routine and enjoyed the additional events embedded into the Opportunity Week (O Week) Program. By the end of the first week, our students have met their new teachers, become quite familiar with the school campus, reset their iPad as important learning tools, and attended focussed sessions about our school expectations, values and processes. As we begin Week 4 of Term 1, our Junior Secondary classes are well settled into their learning routines.

Thank you to all our families and carers for making sure their child has a smooth start. This time and investment are greatly appreciated by all. It has been lovely visiting some Year 7 – 9 classrooms and seeing students already engaging in some interesting units of work. I look forward to seeing more of this over the next few weeks.

Racing Together Programme

Racing Together is a programme designed to introduce Indigenous youths into motorsport. It is an intensive programme which started in October last year and requires the team members (there are now 10 of them) to attend the Norwell Motorplex each weekend to learn specific skills which will encourage them to undertake some sort of STEM education moving forward. They are currently building a race car. All the details are on the Racing Together website www.racingtogether.org

Bright Futures for Karlai and Tayla Warner.

These students have been quite successful in a recent competition in Darwin. Karlai has also been picked as a potential race car driver, so she is doing additional training for that. Read about the competition via this link.

A message from our Engagement Deputy Principal

Welcome back to school for 2022.

It has been wonderful to meet our new Year 7s, and to see the return of our school community after an extended break. The Student Services Team is very excited to work with Shailer Park SHS students this year in taking steps towards the Bright Future that they all deserve.

Assisting our students to reach their full potential is our Student Services Team, who are in the F Block Student Services Hub. Please reach out to Student Services using staff emails, or by calling 34512745.

Our staff can support families with attendance, engagement, wellbeing, uniform, and behaviour. We are very keen to partner with our families to allow our students to embrace the 4RS and flourish at school.

One of the key indicators of success at school and beyond is school attendance. Turning up to school each day gives our students the best possible chance to thrive; academically, socially and emotionally. If you would like support with your child’s attendance, please reach out to their Head of House to discuss further.

We are excited in 2022 to see many plans come to fruition – especially to support our students to find their spark, be connected and to develop into the young adults we want them to be, achieving their best hopes and living fulfilling lives. One of the many ways to connect this school year is for your child to come to school on time and meet other students at our Wild Brain Café (Brekky Club), held at the tuckshop or on the Plaza daily. In addition, Chappy J and Mr H are running lunchtime activities and we will soon kick off our Connect2Community events, in partnership with the Logan City Council. Watch this space!

Please support us to represent Shailer Park SHS with pride by ensuring your child is in full uniform every day – formal on Mondays, and either correct uniform every other day. A reminder that facial piercings are not allowed under our current uniform policy, and our policy also requires students to wear white socks and completely black leather or non-leather equivalent shoes. Your student’s Resilience Planner has more information on uniform, as well as many of our school’s values and policies, so ask your child to share this with you.

Everyone Belongs

We are very proud of our LUCY students and staff who worked with Col McElwaine for our new mural on S Block. This vibrant mural with the words 'NO ONE BELONGS HERE MORE THAN YOU.' celebrates diversity and LGBTQIAP+ inclusion

Messages from our Student Services Team

Messages from the Heads of House

Well, it’s great to finally be back for 2022!

House Report

What is the House Cup? For the benefit of our new students and parents into our school community, let me first explain how our House Points and competition works. Each house is vying to be the House Champion and have that victory recorded on our House Cup. The competition runs from Term 4 the previous year through to the end of Term 3 in the current year.

How do students earn points? In addition to the normal whole school events such as the Swimming, Cross-Country and Athletics Carnivals, there are many other ways for every student to contribute to house points. Each term there is a specific weekly challenge that all students can be involved in and bonus ‘live challenges’ from time to time are added as well. In addition to this, points are also awarded each week based on student attendance, hence the added importance of attending every day. The competition between some House Care Groups can be quite fierce regarding attendance as the top House Care Group in each house wins a pizza party at the end of term…who doesn’t love pizza? While we are working towards earning points, each student’s involvement in the various activities also fosters a sense of belonging and ownership, something we value highly here at Shailer Park.

What does this lead to? On the last day of Term 3, we have a wonderful House Spirit Day. On this day, each house celebrates their achievement by having a day of fun together. There are four levels of rewards. The winner of the House Cup gets to choose their prize from several options given. Some of these can range from a day out at the Gold Coast Inflatable Aqua Park, Obstacle courses and movies…. just to name a few. Throw in some ice creams and lollipops and fun is had by all.

You can see that we have started the year with a tight competition. Bilin Bilin hold a VERY narrow lead over Barnes…. but that can change in the blink of an eye! This term’s house challenge is in our House Showbie. Each week a new puzzle, game or brain teaser is there to be solved. Every student who has a go at answering it is earning house points, regardless of whether their response is correct or not. The emphasis is on participation. All students need to have joined their House Showbie class, see the codes below.

While Francis have been the victors for the previous 2 years, I can assure you that the other houses will be working very hard towards changing the outcome for 2022…. bring it on!

Social Distancing and Mask Wearing during Omicron

As school resumes back for 2022, it is important to follow current health and school guidelines around mask wearing, hand washing and social distancing. This will help limit the spread of infection and assist the school in running smoothly.

When/where required, please remember to wear your mask over your nose and mouth as shown in the photo below. If you wear glasses and struggle with glasses fog, try using a blue surgical mask and putting it on first, making a seal at your nose. Then put the glasses on afterwards.

Welcome New Staff

We are very happy to be welcoming new staff to our growing community this year.

Here are just a few introductions.

I am very excited to be joining the Student Services Team at SPSHS and I look forward to working with students, parents, staff and the wider community. As a Guidance Officer my primary role is to support students to overcome obstacles that may be preventing them from being able to successfully engage with their education.

My career in education began twenty-four years ago where I taught English and History in several private and state schools. ten years into my teaching career I decided to pursue my passion for student wellbeing and undertook further study to become a Guidance Officer. I have been lucky to have worked in this position for the last thirteen years in schools across Logan.

Gayle Smith
Guidance Officer

I am very excited to be joining such a positive and welcoming learning community here at Shailer Park SHS.

I have over sixteen years’ experience in Education, across both the primary and secondary sectors. Teaching and supporting students has always been my passion and I pride myself on my ability to provide individualised support to each of my students.

My philosophy focuses on the importance of teaching the whole child. I believe students learn and excel when their learning environment nurtures their social and emotional needs whilst also catering for their intellectual development.

As a Guidance Officer my passion lies in working collaboratively with school personnel, parents and external support services in the community to assist students in achieving positive educational, developmental and life-long learning outcomes.

I believe in the importance of fostering resilience and personal skills development and I look forward to the opportunities being at Shailer Park State High School will allow me in negotiating, developing and implementing support programs that are responsive to the individual and changing personal, social and educational needs of the students within my care.

Eva Crawford
Guidance Officer

I am in the Science & Health Department, teaching Science and PE. This is my first-year teaching. I decided to become a teacher as I had some awesome teachers in high school that were massive positive influences on me, which I would love to replicate with the students at Shailer Park SHS.

Louis Cosmo
Teacher

I am a part of the both the mathematics department and the Science & HPE department as I will be teaching Junior Maths, Junior Health, and Junior Physical Education. This is my 1st year of teaching having recently graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Secondary Education (HPE Major, Mathematics Minor). My decision to become a teacher was sparked by my older cousins who I view as role models also being teachers and strengthened by my passion for students and desire for positively influencing the future generations. I am passionate about engaging students in lifelong learning and encouraging them to pursue their passions and interests.

Student leadership development

Our student leadership team has kicked off the year meeting about capturing student voices for 2022. We plan to develop and expand committees within the fields of academic, community, cultural and sporting. This will assist in developing a sense of belonging – to school and our houses.

To prepare for 2022 as a member of our Student Leadership Team, they will be participating in a leadership curriculum workshop on the 22nd of February on campus. This will encourage them to develop their personal leadership skills and teambuilding. Along with Head of House and Student Leadership Coordinator, Melissa Dodd the day will be run by an external provider, YLead. This workshop will aim to empower students to thrive as they learn, live and lead.

Valentine’s Day

On Valentine’s Day, we celebrated all kinds of love with a range of activities in the Plaza, including a photo booth, lolly stall, oh Brilliant Jewellery stall, healthy relationships info, games, music and more! Oh Brilliant Jewellery is a small business run by a few of our very own students. They specialise in polymer clay jewellery, with a Valentine’s Day range made specially for our event.

All donations will be going to The Centre for Women & Co., a non-for-profit organisation that exists to educate, support and empower women and their families across the Redlands and Logan region.

Dear Academy families,

I am very excited to welcome all new families to The Academies this year and extend my warm WELCOME BACK to all existing families. I trust you all had an enjoyable Christmas break and are looking forward to experiencing all the wonderful opportunities the academy programs have to offer this year.

With the climate surrounding COVID-19 continuing to evolve, in alignment with the Queensland Government’s Return to School Map, and our schools sharp focus on continuity of learning, families can anticipate resuming extra-curricular activities, such as The Academies, at the beginning of Week 6, Term 1. Should there be any changes to this anticipated start date, or updates regarding individual programs, communication will be emailed to families as soon as it becomes available. I politely request that families refrain from contacting the school regarding training/rehearsal times etc and check their email inbox/junk folder for Academy related communication in the coming weeks.

The Academies Team thank you for your understanding.

We look forward to working with you this year in the pursuit of excellence.

Anyone interested in joining our association is invited to request a membership application by emailing pandc@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au or attending a meeting.

Please note applicants are required to attend a general meeting or apply for the AGM to have their application accepted.

Keep an eye on Facebook for our 2022 Meeting Schedule.

Partnering with us

Shailer Park SHS values partnering with our community to ‘Lift Aspirations through Big Plans and Bold Ambitions for a Bright Future’. Working with parents and families of students is essential in strengthening educational outcomes. We respect that parents and families have different needs and therefore engagement with families is based on individual circumstances.

Please access our Partnership document on our website for detailed information

If your enquiry relates to the classroom, your first point of call should always be the classroom teacher. You can contact them via email

If your enquiry relates to the playground or is in relation to a pattern perhaps across several classes or it is an inquiry relating to behaviour, attendance, uniform or your child’s well-being, your first point of call should always be the Head of House or Case Manager.

Contact details

There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on office@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au so we can update our records. These details include parent/carer’s name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.

Student Absences

Keeping our students safe is our priority. One important way families can partner to keep our children safe is to notify the school prior to 8:50am if your child will be absent via studentabsences@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au or (07) 3451 2766.

If your child is away from school and you have not let us know, parents will receive a text message requesting that you respond with a reason for the absence. It is extremely important that you respond to this text message promptly to enable us to follow up any possible issues.

The safety of students is of paramount importance to us, and we take this responsibility very seriously. If you do not respond to this text message a second text message, email or phone call will be made to you. Thank you for partnering with us so that we know our students are safe.

COVID-19

With COVID-19 prevalent in the community, please monitor your family for symptoms. If a family member is feeling unwell, please take them to a Queensland Health testing clinic where students will be prioritised for a free rapid antigen test (RAT).

If you, your child or a household member tests positive to COVID-19, please follow Queensland Health guidelines for reporting the test result, isolation and close contacts.

If students develop symptoms while at school, you will be contacted and asked to collect them. You will be provided with a free rapid antigen test (RAT) to administer at home.

For more information about Queensland’s response to COVID-19, visit

http://www.covid19.qld.gov.au/

We will communicate with families via our school website ‘Latest News’ segment when we receive advice of a confirmed positive case of COVID 19. We strongly encourage families to monitor updates on our website:
