A message from the Principal
As a little girl, I loved watching the Olympic Games. There was something magical about those incredible athletes moving so fast down the track or across the pool. From the spectator’s perspective, they seem super human, as though they’ve been given the gift of excellence in speed, endurance or athletic accuracy. But scratch the surface on almost every Olympian, from our first competitor in 1936 to those travelling to Tokyo this year, the list of failures and non-placements is long. The challenges are many, from financial hardship to injury and for some, the mental game of believing in their abilities. But they are resilient, reflective, resourceful and relational and this is more useful than any preconceived athletic ability or physical talent.
Anna Meares won six Olympic medals in cycling over a 12-year period, but describes her early years in cycling as woeful. ‘I was just in the field collecting competitor ribbons.’ Of her later exceptional sporting career, she recalls this as the biggest lesson:
‘Success is not about remaining undefeated; it's about how you handle the defeats. You can't have one without the other nor appreciate one without the other.’
Anna embodied this when she broke her neck during a velodrome ride and recovered to win a silver medal at the Beijing Olympic Games a few months later.
For us, watching on the sidelines, we hear the starter’s signal, watch as those athletes give their all and then celebrate the winner. We are not necessarily informed of the long journey to the starting blocks. We do not see the hours, days, weeks and years of training, the blistered feet, early starts or injured bodies. These athletes have more failures than success, but they pick themselves up and bounce forward again and again. This is what makes them great. Of preparation and how to achieve big, Anna Meares has this advice to give:
‘To live big, start small. Keep an eye on the big picture but make what you do today count the most.’
This could not be more pertinent for every single Shailer Park SHS student. Sure, we may not have anyone training for the Olympic Games, but we are learning to be the best humans we can possibly be with the abilities and talents we have. These athletes’ commitment to training is essential, just as our students’ independent practice through study and homework is pivotal to their success. Our teachers are the expert and experienced coaches, providing direction, instruction and guidance.
However, the learner must choose to take this coaching on, to cross over that line of opportunity and really absorb the valuable lessons they are being taught, even when it feels hard.
Just as athletes make mistakes, must correct poor technique or even increase their protein (or green vegetable!) intake to improve their performance, so to do our students need to get comfortable with not always getting it right. Making mistakes is natural in almost every aspect of education and training. Applying those behaviours of being resilient, reflective, resourceful and relational is vital here: they allow us to learn from those mistakes and take small steps in the right direction.
Small things completed well
every day,
lead to those big podium moments of life.
Parent/teacher Partnerships
Teachers are vital in the development of our students’ skills, but parents are our children’s first coaches. I would like to thank all those parents who have committed to a Learning Partnership with Shailer Park SHS. There are many ways we can foster this partnership approach to lifting student aspirations! Your recent engagement at our parent teacher conferences, ‘Parent Teacher Connect’, our Parent Workshop series and even our comprehensive Facebook page updates help us to work in alignment to support students to achieve. Of course, we understand parents have work and other commitments which sometimes rule out attending our scheduled events. For Parent Teacher Connect conferences, please contact your student’s teacher directly via email (you can find their contact details via this link: https://shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au/our-school/our-staff ). Our very helpful Parent Workshops will be repeated at various times throughout the year.
New Facility
Lastly, I am very pleased to announce that our new MPS and amenities were officially opened with our special guest, Minister De Brenni, conducting the opening.
School Captains Sebastian Perez, Aisha Barry & Dakotah Hall, Hon. Mick De Brenni, Logan Basketball Mitch Young and Principal Dorothea Jensen at the official opening of our MPS. 27 April 2021.
We celebrated with students at break time, cutting a giant cake and conducting a basketball shoot out competition which saw Bilin Bilin take a win on the courts.

It was such a pleasure to also share our new facility with parents at the recent Parent Teacher Connect evening.
What a fantastic space the MPS provides for our entire schooling community to gather in!

A message from our Senior Schooling Deputy Principal
As the year moves along ever faster it is important for senior students to remember that every piece of assessment counts. To finish your final year of schooling with the all-important Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), there are 4 key components that students need for them to be eligible:
- Set Amount and Standard of learning- A student must accrue 20 credit points from their subjects over the course of Year 11 & 12. A credit is obtained by getting a C grade or better at a semester junction. Therefore, a student who passes every semester of English in Year 11 & 12 will get 4 credit towards their QCE. Students at Shailer Park study 6 subjects so have the ability to accrue 24 points (over 2 years of study) if they pass every semester.
- Set Pattern of Learning- students must accrue 12 points from Complete Core courses of study. What this means is that a student must have at least 3 subjects that they have started at the beginning of Year 11 and completed at the end of Year 12 (on a C grade or higher). This is why we are very strict on subject changes in the senior years. This can also come from a completed VET course.
- Literacy and Numeracy requirements- these are the final 2 components and the easiest way to get these is to pass a semester of English and a semester of Maths (preferably EVERY semester of English and Maths)
Our senior data team work very hard to monitor all senior students to ensure that they are on track for their QCE. Students who are not on track will be required to meet with myself (Senior Deputy) and their parents to discuss options to ensure that they are finishing strong with their QCE in hand.
Long story short- every
assessment counts,
every grade counts, every lesson counts!
By Year 12 senior students should be doing a minimum of 2 hours of study/research/assessment/revision every night to achieve their best. (That equates to 30mins for every subject that they had that day). Year 10 is the foundation to create great learning habits for senior success. I expect our seniors at Shailer to be empowered learners, doing whatever it takes to reach their bold ambitions. The future is in YOUR hand’s seniors.
If you would like to learn more about the QCE or to see how your child is tracking please feel free to make an appointment to meet with me through the lovely admin team.

2022 ENROLMENTS ARE NOW OPEN!
Enrolment Packs for 2022 are now available from our Administration Building and our school website. Inside these Enrolment Packs, you will find details regarding the overall enrolment process and specific information about the trial process for our programs of excellence, The Academies.
Our highly popular Principal’s Tours have returned in 2021. These events are advertised through our school’s Facebook page and are booked through Eventbrite. Our Virtual School Tour allows visitors to see our classrooms and other school facilities and can be found on our school website.
Parents/carers play a very important role in the education of your child and in supporting their learning and wellbeing as they transition to high school. In coming weeks, a team of our teachers will be visiting our feeder primary schools to discuss how your child’s transition to secondary school can be supported through the enrolment process. Keep an eye on your school’s newsletters and/or notices for further details. I look forward to meeting many interested students during these primary school visits.
NAPLAN 2021 – Let’s do this!
Our Year 7 and Year 9 students will be involved in the NAPLAN Tests in 2021. This year, the NAPLAN assessment window is scheduled for Tuesday 11 May, Wednesday 12 May and Thursday 13 May 2021 (Week 4 Term 2).
In 2021, our Year 7 and 9 students participating in the NAPLAN Tests will be using the paper-based NAPLAN test. The plan is for all schools in Australia to transition to NAPLAN Online by 2022.
Some brief details about our 2021 NAPLAN Test schedule are:
Tuesday 11 May 2021 |
Language Conventions
Test |
Year 7: 45 min. Year 9: 45 min. |
Tuesday 11 May 2021 |
Writing Test |
Year 7: 40 min. Year 9: 40 min. |
Wednesday 12 May 2021 |
Reading Test |
Year 7:65 min. Year 9: 65 min. |
Thursday 13 May 2021 |
Numeracy Test |
Year 7: 65 min. Year 9: 65 min. |
On these days, Year 7 & 9 students are required to go to their allocated test classroom from the beginning of the school day at 8.45am. Students have been given this message in recent lessons and will be reminded throughout the week.
What can parents do to support their child?
On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so.
You can support your child by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply do their best. Our classroom teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance. All Year 7 and 9 parents would have recently received an email from Mr Albertson (Dean of Studies) regarding parent withdrawal from the 2021 NAPLAN Tests. Please contact Mr Albertson if you wish to do so.
UPLIFT PROGRAM
Supporting our Year 8 and Year 9 students
Our UPLIFT Program is an opportunity for Year 8 and Year 9 students to receive targeted, personalised support for English and Maths. This valuable program is designed to support students to achieve a “C” achievement standard in the assessment tasks of the current unit of work. UPLIFT is therefore an important strategy for supporting our students to succeed. The success of the UPLIFT Program, however, is dependent upon student engagement during the UPLIFT session and parental support of their child’s attendance. Thank you to the many parents who have partnered with us as their child engages in the UPLIFT Program.
The Term 2 UPLIFT Program is scheduled to start next Monday 10 May (Week 4 Term 2) at 1.50pm. This week, students required to attend the Term 2 UPLIFT Program will receive an email to confirm their participation and room details. Parents will also receive this email. Please contact me directly if you have any questions regarding your child’s involvement in the Term 2 UPLIFT Program.

Hello and welcome back to all of our Sporting and Cultural Academy families. It’s been a jam packed and exciting 10 weeks for our Dance, Futsal and Volleyball Academy students with the return to training, rehearsal and competition.
I am so proud of what we have been able to achieve collectively this year already and I extend my deepest gratitude to the teaching and coaching staff, as well as the parents and carers, who support our student athletes and performers to be their best each and every day.
It’s with great pride that our school now offers a state-of-the-art facility for our Academy students to learn and train in.
Our newly refurbished MPS is the heart of our school and home to our Sting Volleyball and Futsal Academies.
It’s been wonderful welcoming the Futsal Academy back on site and we look forward to seeing our Volleyball Academy recommence training, on site, in the coming weeks.
Over the years, The Academies at Shailer Park SHS has evolved and grown. We are proud of our short history and the success of each Program of Excellence in developing student athletes and performers who are highly engaged in school, sport and culture. To continue to meet the needs of our Academy students and the wider community, we propose to restructure program offerings for 2022. The aim of this restructure is to design a program which provides all Academy students with a number of genuine pathways (both at school and beyond school) whilst providing a vast array of opportunities and experiences that are best suited to the individual and team. Depending on individual student interest and desired outcomes, all Academy students will begin 2022 in one of three pathways: Engagement, High Performing or Elite. Members are encouraged to keep an eye out on Team App for a survey which unpacks this proposal further and offers individuals the opportunity to provide feedback and have their say. I thank you in advance for your time in completing this survey and for your valuable feedback.
I’m pleased to announce that our Sporting and Cultural Academy students will have the opportunity to attend our first SOAR (Spirit of Academy Retreat) Day on Tuesday 1st June. SOAR is designed and facilitated by the team at Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre on site at Gold Coast Performance Centre. This wonderful opportunity will see students develop essential skills in leadership and athlete development. As numbers are limited, families are encouraged to keep an eye on Team App for further information regarding this opportunity.
There are a plethora of opportunities and events for Academy students to engage in this term, we hope to see as many parents and friends at these events as possible.
Please see below a few words from Mr Kelly and Mr Croucher.

Sting Volleyball Academy
It has been a very busy and successful start to 2021 for the Sting Volleyball Academy. The excitement and energy for training and our early year competitions after an interrupted 2020 shows promise for a great year ahead.
On the 17th of February, the female Volleyball Academy students represented Shailer Park SHS at the Pacific District Rivers Gala Day. They played against all the other schools in our district. Both our Year 12 girls, who were undefeated, and Year 8 girls, who only lost one game, came first place and will now be progressing to the Metro Finals Competition in May.

On the 7th and 8th of March, 36 of our Volleyball Academy students represented Shailer Park SHS at Queensland Beach Volleyball Schools Cup. We entered teams from Year 8 all the way to Year 12 which ended up being our largest participation in this competition ever. All teams were very successful, winning multiple games on the Sunday and Monday. This is particularly encouraging as many of these students hadn’t ever played beach volleyball before. Two of our teams progressed to the Grand Final on Monday afternoon. Benjamin Lee and Ethan Guttenbeil in Year 12 won the Gold Medal after a convincing win against CHAC who they lost to in the pool rounds. Shawn Wilson and Noah Wann from Year 10 won the Silver Medal after unfortunately losing their Grand Final against Craigslea.

During the tournament, our school was approached by the Queensland Academy of Sport who are interested in some of our athletes.
We look forward to welcoming QAS at some of our training sessions in hopes that some of our athletes will join the QAS Emerging Talent program. This brings a very exciting new partnership for our Volleyball Academy.
Shairmaine Zeydel, Brooke Davidson, Karlai Warner, Jade Parker and Charlie Daniels all made it into the U15 Girls Pacific District team. These girls went on to South Coast trials. Shairmaine was successful and made it into the South Coast team and Brooke Davidson was selected as a shadow player. Aisha Barry, Emily Burke, Sereana Kunaqoro-Christie and Allegonda Zeydel were all selected in the U19 Girls Pacific District team. These girls went on to South Coast trials and Aisha, Sereana and Allegonda were successful and selected for the South Coast team. Lastly, Benjamin Lee made it into the U19 boys Pacific District team and then was also successful in being selected for the South Coast team. These students selected for their respective South Coast teams will attend The State Championships later in the year.
A special thanks to Mr Lee and Miss King for their work in getting our teams to Rivers day and to Mr Tannahill for his support on Friday afternoons, helping our Beach Volleyball students prepare for Beach Schools cup.
This term, students can look forward to training sessions recommencing in the newly renovated MPS, Beach Nationals and our Year 9 and 10 students attending Intermediate Schools Cup in Toowoomba.

Sting Volleyball Director
Sting Futsal Academy
The start of Term One and the new academic year has been a positive one. Our Academy Launch night was the first official event on the calendar and proved to be a really successfully night. A high number of new Futsal students joined us for the occasion and met Connor (Head Coach) and Dane (Academy Ambassador) for the first time.
The biggest regional titles, now known as the Brisbane Metro Titles (formerly SEQ), were held in week seven of Term 1. This event is the biggest regional competition under the Australian Futsal Association governing body and saw all of our teams enter. All three girls’ teams and two boys’ teams progressed to the final’s day the following week. We are pleased to announce that the 15s and 16s boys will progress to the state competition later in the year. The girls just missed out on their place and will try again with the other boys’ teams at the Gold Coast regional titles. I would like to highlight that the 19 boys scored an awesome goal playing the 5th man formation, which they haven’t practiced before, so kudos to those boys.
Term 1 ended with our awards night that had been postponed from the end of last year. It was a great opportunity to catch up with our Year 13s and celebrate the success of the Academy in 2020.
Term two greets us with two big competitions. In mid-May we have the Gold Coast Regional Titles as mentioned previously. This will see all the teams that didn’t progress in Brisbane Metro have another chance at progressing to State Titles. On another exciting note, we have a Queensland School Sport Futsal Cup for South East Queensland in the 13/14 years age bracket. The 10 most promising Futsal players of this age bracket will be picked to play in a two-day competition for both boys and girls.
I look forward to another exciting term of Futsal.

The Creative Industries
I have thoroughly enjoyed spending time in many of our Creative Industries classes over the past 14 weeks. It’s wonderful to see the rigour, passion for and diversity of learning in each subject area. Thank you to the wonderful teaching staff who are building the confidence of our young people to explore the world, concepts and interests through the Arts. I am repeatedly inspired by our students’ depth of knowledge and skill in creating meaningful and complex works of arts.
On Monday 21st June (Week 10), our Creative Industries faculty will be hosting a curriculum evening here at school. This event aims to showcase some of the exceptional learning that has taken place over the semester in our classrooms. Audiences can expect to view live and pre-recorded performances, view visual and media art displays, take part in workshops and Q&A sessions with student artists and much, much more. This event is a free event and open to the whole community. I look forward to sharing more information with you in the coming weeks.

Instrumental Music
For the first time in my 20 years at Shailer Park High we have over 100 instrumental students learning a total of 162 instruments! Our program just gets stronger and stronger.
The Jazz Band performed at the Academic Awards Ceremony held at In Sports stadium.
Their powerhouse performance reflected the commitment of the students and the excitement of being able to perform again. I am so proud of them.

In Week 10 we were excited to once again be able to participate in the Logan Secondary Music Workshops at Browns Plains SHS. Unfortunately, we were only able to complete day one of the 2-day band workshop due to the COVID 19 outbreaks in Brisbane. Nevertheless, the 10 students from Shailer Park SHS worked hard all day, completing 4 challenging pieces in the 55-piece band which included students from Browns Plains, Flagstone, Springwood and Marsden State High Schools.

The end of Term 1 also sees the retirement of Mrs Rosey Dorney, who has been a classroom music teacher and string teacher in our area since the early 1990s. Mrs Dorney has enjoyed an outstanding teaching career and has touched the lives of thousands of students over this time. We will miss her greatly. Her replacement is Ms Sue Ferrers, who will be teaching at SPSHS on Tuesday mornings. Allegretto Strings rehearsals will be on Tuesday mornings in Term 2 starting at 7.45 am. Mrs Alley will once again be teaching the students taught by Ms Ferrers in Term 1.

Year 9 Drama
Year 9 Drama Term 1 has been exciting. Students have developed their understanding of Realism through studying the play text Two Weeks with the Queen. Classes had the opportunity to refine their voice and movement skills and develop character.
Throughout the term both classes have developed and strengthened relationships with their peers through - Carton, random Nutbush dancing as well as some bizarre improvisations. We’re very excited to begin delving into the world of Magical Realism and Australian Gothic next term!

Art Club
Art Club was a bustling hub of creative activity in Term 1. Lots of students from different year levels and artistic backgrounds joined us on Wednesday afternoons to work on nifty little projects or extend upon their art assessment tasks from class. Here are two works from Aliyah in Year 9 and Ava in Year 10 who have used Art Club to work on assessment and create incredible works of art!

Ongoing Fundraising
We are fortunate to have several opportunities for our school community to contribute to fundraising efforts without costing any more than your family’s usual spend.
Together these provide thousands of dollars each year that go towards our fundraising targets. Please share these details with family & friends to help make the most of these opportunities!
Another way to assist with fundraising without costing more than your family’s usual spend is by claiming giveaway items you’re eligible for & donating to the P&C for use as part of fundraising prize packages. For example, the current Coles MasterChef cookware promo; these are quality items that we could add to, to make a great prize hamper.
