A message from the Principal

Term 4 is an important time for school traditions, celebrating our achievements and importantly, recognising the accomplishments of our Year 12 students and their journey through the schooling system. During this time, I always become reflective on their educational journey, from impossibly small students in Prep, to mature young adults who tower over me like giants. From having a basic understanding of the alphabet to writing 1000+ word essays. From playing in a sandpit to designing, fixing, creating or philosophising. From ‘we share and take turns’ to ‘Let’s talk about your TikTok account.’ Finishing high school is not simply about putting the uniform away for good or realising that learning is now done with. It is a rite of passage and a recognition of 13 years of growth.

Our Year 12s have accomplished great things: they have acquired new skills, knowledge and abilities and are ready for the adult world, its rights and responsibilities. COVID has certainly created many challenges for these adaptable young people, and as a schooling community we couldn’t be prouder of how they have conducted themselves over the past year. As a staff, our excitement in celebrating their graduation is profound and we have worked very hard to make this exceptional event as special and accessible as we can. We are thrilled to have a graduation which allow parents to attend and look forward to celebrating with you. I would like to acknowledge the P&C, who have worked with us to plan a special surprise for our Year 12 students at their upcoming formal. We’re all looking forward to seeing their surprised faces!

The Year 12s are entering a world which has proven itself to be changeable and uncertain, however I know from observing their adaptability, resilience and care for each other, that they face that uncertainty with skills that will last them a lifetime. Their legacy for the remainder of our students is this: that learning how to learn best, is one of the greatest skills we can acquire. School is not just about Maths or Sport or Chemistry or what’s for lunch at the tuckshop, but about learning how to be the best person they can be.

At Shailer Park SHS, we are realising more and more that maintaining healthy wellbeing plays a huge part in education, something we’ve been focussed on this term with our Mental Health Week activities.

Having good mental health (feeding our wild, emotional and smart brains) is not just critical for success at school but necessary to deal with challenges, adapt to change, build healthy relationships and so that kids can generally feel good about themselves. We all want our children to be happy, and you can help through boosting your student’s physical and psychological immunity. And no, there isn’t a supplement that will cover both types of immunity and it doesn’t involve simply giving our children anything and everything they ask for.

The key to a well life is building resilience. We can boost this by helping our children to feed their wild brain needs through sleep, good nutrition and routines that offer predictability.

Additionally, we can help to feed our young people’s emotional brain needs through fostering strong connections with them as well as actively helping them to build their support network amongst peers and other helpful role models. It’s also important to let our children know that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.

Psychologist, Dr Justin Coulson who partners with us, offers a helpful article for parents that you can access via this link:

https://www.happyfamilies.com.au/blog/teenagers-brain-like-ferrari-bicycle-brakes/

One of the most important messages Dr Coulson shares with us, is that the way our children spell love, is T.I.M.E. Spending time with our young people (particularly away from screens) is extremely valuable in developing those important connections.

Last week we acknowledged Mental Health Week, and used an extensive program of activities to shine a light on helping our students and staff develop their knowledge and understanding on how they can feed their wild, emotional and smart brain needs. Students engaged in a range of experiences that celebrated their diversity, encouraged physical activity and developed preventative wellbeing strategies. Everyone had fun during Mental Health Week, however it is important to note that fostering wellbeing at Shailer Park SHS happens each and every day.

Finally, I know all our teachers and staff would like to wish our Year 12s the absolute best in their final week of studies and as they enter their final external exams. As a school, we celebrated with our Year 12s on Monday during their final school assembly, acknowledging their leadership and resilience. It was definitely bittersweet for both our teachers and students, who have come to know and appreciate each other so much during this final year.

To the Year 12s of 2020, we wish you all the best in your final assessments and look forward to celebrating (even dancing!) with you at your upcoming graduation and formal.

Finish strong!

2020 has definitely been a year to remember. It has been a memorable, challenging and defining year. As the end of 2020 fast approaches, however, it is important to remember to finish strong. The year may have started fast. Our challenge is to also finish strong. Finishing strong builds character and enables you to reach your potential.

Here are five ways you can finish strong in 2020:

  1. Review and recommit to your goals – what do you want to achieve by the end of 2020?
  2. Work out your next steps – what do you need to do next? Make these next steps effort driven.
  3. Identify what you need to stop doing.
  4. Identify what you need to keep doing.
  5. Identify what you need to start doing.

It is important to remember that every task, goal, race and year eventually comes to an end. I look forward to hearing about how our junior secondary students finish strong in 2020.

2021 Elective subjects for Year 7 and 8.

In recent weeks, our Year 7, 8 & 9 students had the opportunity to nominate their preferences for elective subjects for 2021. Information sessions and instructions were given to students during LIFT lessons in Term 3. Elective subjects in the Creative Industries Faculty and the Technology Faculty provide an opportunity for students to expand their personal interests and talents while also specialising in certain subjects.

Thank you to those students who have submitted the required forms to the Administration Building. This is an important responsibility for all secondary students. Your preferences are currently being collated to draft your 2021 timetable.

2021 Enrolments

It is not too late to enrol your child for Year 7. It is important to complete all parts of the enrolment process – the Enrolment Pack, an enrolment interview, Orientation Days - for your child. If you have not yet done so, I encourage parents to visit our school website or contact our Enrolments Officer enrolment@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au to start the enrolment process.

Thank you to the many families who have completed the Enrolment Pack and Enrolment Interview for 2021.Many of these enrolment interviews are scheduled over the next few weeks.

All enrolled students are invited to attend the Orientation Days that are scheduled for Thursday and Friday of Week 9 Term 4. Further details and a full program for the Orientation Days will be emailed to parents soon. Please keep an eye on your email address and our Facebook page for further details.

In the meantime, I encourage incoming students to visit the Virtual School Tour. This tour is now available on our school website. Visit the Virtual School Tour as many times as you want to get a good idea of the main buildings of our school.

A message from our Deputy Principal of Engagement

It has been lovely to return to school this term, after a refreshing break with family and friends, to engage with a range of activities designed specifically to nourish our Wild and Emotional brains during Brainstorm Week. Our school received a Queensland Mental Health Week grant of $1500 which allowed the Student Services Team to lead a range of activities for staff and students. Mental health is just as important as physical health, so please reach out to the SST if you feel your student needs extra support. We wouldn’t ignore a broken arm – we shouldn’t ignore overwhelming feelings either.

It has been a pleasure working with Year 7s this term in LIFT – with a focus on cyber safety. Our Year 7s are considering survey data from their own cohort that shows that there are some aspects regarding the use of technology and social media that we need to work on together, to ensure mutual understanding of the benefits as well as the challenges technology brings. I look forward to working with Year 7 LIFT classes to hear the solutions they have created to address these challenges.

It was also a great privilege to read with two Year 7 classes in honour of Book Week. As an English teacher, feeding my emotional brain with words has always been something I have turned to when I feel happy and calm – and when I am not. I have challenged the Year 7s to come and share with me something about their reading habits – so far I have learnt about a love of non-fiction; K-pop bands who have based their music on Robert Frost’s famous poem, The Road Not Taken; stories about bushrangers; and how some kids in 2020 love Paul Jennings and Enid Blyton just as much now as I did when I was their age! Reading helps us stay connected and empathise with others – challenge your student to come and chat to me about their reading this term.

Our Student Services team always find Term 4 bittersweet – on one hand there are many exciting end of year events and celebrations, and we are thrilled and very proud to see our Year 12s take the next step towards life beyond school. On the other hand, we have to farewell Year 12 students who have grown into kind and connected young adults who have contributed to our community, and whom we will greatly miss. Good luck Year 12s, as you progress through your final assessments. We can’t wait to celebrate with you at your formal and graduation.

Another exciting aspect of Term 4 is hearing our young people who are aspiring to leadership positions speak about their commitment to our school. Exciting things await for all of our students – and at Shailer Park SHS, all students are leaders, not just those who wear the badge.

This has been a challenging year no doubt, and the Student Services Team continues to feel very privileged to share in the education of your child. Please reach out to your Head of House, or myself, if there is support your student needs to cross the line of opportunity this term to finish 2020 strong.

This year’s Mental Health Week put on by the Student Services Team was one of the most successful to date. The P&C won a $1500 Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) to support the events run at the school and students have agreed that it was well worth the efforts.

Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) is held in October every year and aims to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health and wellbeing. The initiative is linked to National Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Day with this year’s theme for QMHW being 'Take time — for Mental Health’. Take time is about the simple yet proven things everyone can do to boost mental wellbeing! Shailer Park SHS students named the week ‘Brainstorm!’ and was all about feeding all three of your brains to improve mental health and maximise learning.

The week’s activities focused on supporting the mental health and wellbeing of both staff and students and offered activities and information to feed their emotional, smart and wild brains.

Brainstorm! Feeding all three of your brains to improve mental health and maximise learning - A Mental Health Week initiative #QMHW

Our Student Services Team have organised a week packed full of activities and learning centred around mental health. Staff and students are welcome to participate in the activities as per the timetable.

How will you get involved?

Thank you to all the staff and students who got involved in feeding their 3 brains this week. We hope our entire community continues to take time for their mental health. Congratulations and a massive thank you to our Student Services Team who once again organised a wonderful week for our school.

House Points Update

The competition between the houses for the overall winner has been strong all year. This term, students have the chance to earn very valuable house points by participating in our inter-house handball competition. This is held on a Friday at first break. We have had a great number of students battling it out, with some very fierce competition on the Year 11 court! The house that has the most points by the end of week 5 will be declared the winner. All students in the house will have the opportunity to participate in a reward day.

Years 10 and 11 from the winning house will spend their final day at the Aquapark on the Gold Coast while Years 7-9 will have the run of an inflatable obstacle course, sausage sizzle lunch, movies and popcorn on the Tuesday of their final week.

The table below shows the points as they currently stand.

Bilin Bilin and Francis are battling for top spot. Barnes and Karle are having their own battle to avoid the wooden spoon – something worth fighting for!

We look forward to the next couple of weeks to see who the eventual winner is.

Brainstorm Week - Teacher vs Student Activities

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzJWlBdN9cI

Last Thursday, about 80 students partook in a range of fun physical activities hoping to beat the teachers. There was a lot of rivalry and cheering going on with some fantastic results and a whole lot of laughs. The finale event consisted of the Tug of War – between the students and teachers. With about 50 junior students involved, the teachers were largely understaffed and had to call on some of the seniors to assist. In the end, the juniors with double the amount of numbers were victorious over the teachers. A great time was had by all with everybody walking away with an ice cream for their efforts.

The winners of each activity were treated to a free Subway lunch on Monday.

Congratulations to:

Biggest Football Kick – Jackson Fisher- Bilin Bilin
Biggest Vortex Throw – Mitchell Blight-Francis
Fastest 20m Dash – Vincent O’Halloran-Bilin Bilin
Teacher Winner – Mr Brooks-Bilin Bilin.

Brainstorm Week Breaky Club

Last week during Brainstorm Week we saw a special Breaky Club available for our wonderful students at Shailer Park High. The Student Services Team had a smorgasbord of choice for breakfast including; muesli & yoghurt cups, a variety of danishes, and ham and cheese toasties. Many students took the opportunity to feed their wild and emotional brains with this gourmet free breakfast, which enabled them to access their smart brains for learning throughout the day.

Hands on Learning

The Hand on Learning students were welcomed back to Term 4 with plenty of work to complete. Towards the end of term 3 students finished their personal workhorses to further assist their future projects

This term the Hands on Learning crew are establishing and focusing on the pillar ‘a place to belong’.

The group have been lucky enough to work with the school to make an area available to complete all projects, store tools and socialise throughout the working days. Photos are to come of the ‘before’ and ‘after’ – Watch out Scotty Cam and The Block, this will be the room reveal that should win!

A massive thankyou to CSR Limited for noticing the amazing work and the potential our Hands on Learning crew have, CSR Limited have been kind enough to donate a pallet of bricks to help build further school projects. The students already have plans and we are excited to reveal the finished project that all students and staff will be able to enjoy.

If you have any tools, materials or resources that could go towards the Hands on Learning crew, it would be greatly appreciated.

Student Leadership for 2021

We believe that all students have the capacity to lead within our school culture and we aim to develop individuals to have big plans and bold ambitions for a bright future.

Our student leaders this year have been very proactive with school community events, having a student voice and communicating their ideas around our school culture. We thank them for all their time and effort this year and look forward to 2021.

Students are challenged and expected to work collaboratively to inspire and motivate others in promoting a school culture of pride and belonging.

As the year is slowly coming to a close for our current Student Leadership Team, another phase opens up for our fresh new team for 2021. Thank you to all the students who nominated, it is great to see so many stepping up and crossing that line of opportunity to lead within our school community.

In week 3, our bold nominated School Captains pre-recorded a speech, which was presented on our Zoom assembly. The student body had a vote and staff votes will be finalised by the end of this week. Coming up in week 5, our nominated House Captains will have their chance to deliver their pre-recorded speeches and then all leadership roles will be formally announced at our Week 6 assembly.

Additionally, there were a very large number of students who also nominated for Academy, CAST, Nexus/Altum ambassadors as well as Year Level Representatives.

We wish all the candidates well and stay tuned for the announcement of our Student Leadership Team for 2021 in our next newsletter!

Sting Futsal Academy

As COVID-19 restrictions suspended all futsal competitions earlier in the year, we saw an influx of competition, 7 days to be exact, scheduled in the first two and a half weeks of Term 4.

Week one saw the majority of our teams compete in the Sunny Coast School Titles. This competition highlighted the developmental progress our students have achieved throughout the year and was most evident in our new Academy students. Although none of our teams progressed to the next round of Champs of Champs, I was extremely proud of all the teams for their sportsmanship and commitment to the game.

This week, three teams played in the regional Champion of Champions competition: our 19 boys, 15 boys and 13 girls. Qualifying for and playing in this tournament is a huge achievement for our students, one which further highlights individual and collective achievement, and further reinforces the progress our Academy is making each and every year. I’m proud to announce that 2020 sees the largest representation in Champion of Champions that our school has seen in years. I am extremely proud of our teams and hope to increase numbers in 2021.

Champs of Champs was also the last school competition for our current Year 12 students. I would just like to say it has been a pleasure coaching them over the years and they have shown the younger grades the intensity in which they should always be playing/striving towards.

Thank you Dean Swatton, David Swatton, Nirav Nand, Corey Palmer and Kenneth Wilkinson. You will be missed. All the best for your future.

Sting Volleyball Academy

On 16-18 October, our Year 7-10 Volleyball Academy students represented Shailer Park State High School at Junior and Intermediate Schools Cup. 7 teams attended the tournament, Year 7-9 boys and girls teams and the Year 10 girls’ team, making it our largest event of the year. This was the first ever volleyball tournament for our Year 7 teams and a number of new students within the other year levels. No medals were won, however each team gained valuable experience against high level division 1 opponents. The energy, enthusiasm and joy that each of our teams brought to the weekend was truly a great achievement for our Academy and we will return even stronger next year.

I am very proud with how all 62 students represented our school.

I’d like to thank our coaches for all their hard work, parents for their continued support, and SPSHS staff members who joined us on their weekend to cheer on our teams.

Ignite Dance Academy

On Thursday 15 October, our Ignite Dance Academy students took part in the annual SPSHS Choreography Challenge. The event provides students with the opportunity to extend their choreography skills individually or within a group in any dance genre.

This year’s challenge looked a little different from previous years thanks to Covid-19 restrictions. Students’ routines were filmed without an audience and will be submitted to an industry adjudicator, with results being announced in a fortnight. There were some outstanding entries this year, particularly from our junior students, which is a sign of exciting things ahead for our program.

As we wrap up for the year, I would like to thank each Dance Academy student for their optimism and resilience this year as we worked with a very different program than originally expected. In particular,

I’d like to acknowledge our four outgoing Year 12 students for their significant contribution to the Ignite Dance Academy over the past few years. We will miss you and wish you all the best with the next chapter of your lives.

News from our Library

The Hive

It has been a busy start to the final leg of the school year, especially for the library, and there have been a number of exciting events that have occurred in these first couple of weeks.

Firstly, the library has been renamed and rebranded, ‘The Hive’. This name brings to mind a range of connotations, including a place for inquiring minds, a sense of connectedness, and an area to read, relax and reflect. In order to capture the essence of such an environment, a competition was launched inviting students to create an appropriate logo and I am pleased to announce AliSina Attaee as the winning entrant.

AliSina not only scored a gift voucher for his efforts, but his design has also provided a lasting legacy within the school community. Well done.

Curious Creatures, Wild Minds

The Children’s Book Council of Australia annually shortlists the works of some of the most talented Australian authors. This officially began on Sunday 18th October and finishes on Friday 23rd October (later than usual due to the Covid-19 issues). As part of this event, students have been busily designing facemasks around the theme, “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds” and the most imaginative creation will be chosen this week and rewarded with a prize.

It has been marvellous seeing students of all ages being involved and unveiling their artistic talents.

Other activities have also been scheduled for the week, including a photo booth with brave participants featured in zany outfits and headgear, as well as a costume parade on Friday with teachers and students invited to dress up in a book character. Whilst all of this means lots of fun, and of course, some obligatory teasing, the underlying objective is to spark greater interest in reading because, as we all know, reading serves many purposes from improving academic outcomes to boosting mental health.

So keep an eye on this space for exciting events. Remember, encouraging your child to read has a long-term ripple effect on all of their endeavours, now and in the future.

Happy Reading

Catapult, young entrepreneur program

Unleashing entrepreneurial spirit is so important for our youth!

The Catapult program is designed to help young people aged 12–18 learn skills they need to succeed in business and life and to unleash their entrepreneurial spirit by building their enterprise skills, equipping teachers and parents with the information and tools to support them, and by building stronger links with employers.

Recently students pitched their 'Social Enterprise' business and event ideas to the Logan City Council-led Catapult Entrepreneurship Program judging panel who provided feedback and voted for the groups to move through to showcase round.

We are proud of the amazing efforts of all of the students involved.

The Catapult Showcase will be held in November, where the winners from each of the schools involved in the program come together.

Congratulations to Jesse C in securing a school-based Apprenticeship with the fun crew out at M&P Engineering!

Jesse will commence his apprenticeship next week and will be undertaking a Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical – Fitting and Turning.

2021 STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME (SRS) FEES AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR LEVIES

The P&C recently endorsed the 2021 School Resource Scheme (SRS) fees. The Junior SRS fee (years 7-9) is $320 per year and the Senior SRS fee (years 10-12) is $360 per year. The School is pleased to announce the Senior SRS fee will now encompass both the ATAR and VET Career Ready Programs. The fees provide value to students as the School is able to source economic pricing for textbooks and consumable resourcing. An Early Bird discount of $20 is offered for the SRS fee. To be eligible, fees must be paid in full by Friday 12 February 2021. Payment plans for the 2021 fees can commence after invoices have been issued this term.

A new SRS Participation Agreement Form for each student will be forwarded to parents this term. This form must be completed and returned to the office by 6 November, 2020. Please note that from 2021, only one form per student will be required for the duration of a student’s enrolment. Parents who are participating in the SRS can choose to opt out of the SRS in future years by completing a new Participation Agreement Form.

Extra-Curricular levies for The Academies and Instrumental Music will be invoiced early in 2021. From 2021, the Vocal Ensemble levy will be included in the SRS fee. The levy amounts are available on the school website at the link below:

https://shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au/support-and-resources/payments

Payment for all SRS fees and extra-curricular levies must be made in full or a payment plan in place by 26 February 2021.

CANTEEN

The Canteen is open each day from Monday to Friday at first break only. Payments can be made with EFTPOS or orders can be placed using the Canteen menu on Qkr. Due to reduced staffing, cash payments will not be taken. Please contact the Office if you would like to volunteer in the Canteen.

A vending machine stocked with drinks and healthy snacks is now operational in the Canteen area. Payments can be made with EFTPOS, Visa and Mastercard, ApplePay and GooglePay. The School will also be trialling the use of a loadable Student ID card for vending machine purchases, topped up with payments through Qkr. If you are interested in participating in the trial, please email finance@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au or contact Kristin Fiddyment on 3451 2777.

QKR APP

The School utilises the QKR app for payment of non-invoiced optional items such as replacement student ID cards and breakfast and lunch specials through our restaurant, Sapphires. Payments for P&C fundraising activities and events such as pie drives, raffles, and sausage sizzles will also be processed using Qkr. This easy-to-use mobile app for iPhones and Android smartphones makes school payments a breeze. Instructions to set up QKR are provided below. Thank you for supporting the School as it adopts cashless payment systems.

Contact details

There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on office@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au so we can update our records. These details include parent/carer’s name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.

Student Absences

Keeping our students safe is our priority. One important way families can partner to keep our children safe is to notify the school prior to 8:50am if your child will be absent via studentabsences@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au or (07) 3451 2766.

If your child is away from school and you have not let us know, parents will receive a text message requesting that you respond with a reason for the absence. It is extremely important that you respond to this text message promptly to enable us to follow up any possible issues.

The safety of students is of paramount importance to us and we take this responsibility very seriously. If you do not respond to this text message a second text message, email or phone call will be made to you. Thank you for partnering with us so that we know our students are safe.
