A message from the Principal
When I was given the news I had been appointed the Principal of Shailer Park State High School, I remember being both elated and a little nervous. I knew this schooling community was proud, strong and resilient, and that challenges facing them would be dealt with a mixture of determination and sheer tenacity. I would need to have these valuable character traits too. What I didn’t realise, was that the Shailer Park community would also be one of gentle care and support, that in times of uncertainty and even fear, they would enclose their arms around each other and offer what they could to make the hard road easier. Considering the last few weeks, where we have all held our breath with one eye on the ever-changing COVID cases and how they impact our lives, now, more than ever, that determination, resilience and strength the Shailer community is known for is being drawn upon.
I know that some in our community are feeling fatigued by this constant change. One very effective way to help maintain our own wellbeing and that of our children is to engage in those small routines within the home which help retain a sense of stability. We know from research that when young people participate in regular routines and rituals with their family, they help to form protective qualities that support them through tough times.
What rituals do your family engage in? Is it having dinner together, walking the dog, sitting down to a board game or watching a particular sport each week?
Ensuring these rituals remain and are occurring regularly during challenging times is so important in guaranteeing your young people are being supported to be resilient. Routines help our children feel safe and loved, regardless of how much attitude you might receive from them at times!
Remaining hopeful, finding wonderment and awe in our lives and modelling this to our children is also incredibly important. Whether it’s commenting on the gardens which are starting to bloom, the sunshine on our faces or the smiles of our children, there is something positive in each and every day we can focus on to boost our wellbeing and happiness.
During these times, it is also helpful to reflect on how we can ‘think globally’ and ‘act locally’ through simple things such as showing kindness and being generous. I don’t have to look far around the Shailer Park community to be inspired by the incredible acts of generosity on display.
We have our very own Student Support Officer, Lynne Grimes, who was treated to a beautiful bunch of flowers from a grateful parent last week.

A local Shailer Park woman recently sewed hundreds of face masks, and then gave them all away for free so people in our community could be safer.

Further afield, our neighbours on the Gold Coast are helping domestic violence victims through an innovative initiative from the non-government funded charity, Hearts of Purple. The charity delivers purple wheelie bins to events which are used to collect recyclables that can then be turned into cash to help those in need.

Whether you’re aiming to thank someone for their hard work and care, or make the world a better place for the less fortunate, there are plenty of ways we can make a positive difference to those in our community. The best part, is that helping others makes us feel better too.
It has been wonderful to see our students return to sporting and cultural activities whilst continuing to take all necessary precautions to maintain the health and safety of our school community. There have been a number of events in the school, and in particular I was thrilled to see our dancers perform and the achievements of our volleyballers recognised over the past few weeks.

Thank you to the many parents and staff who have shown their support by attending and cheering on our students at recent events and for your support in following the COVID safe requirements. I realise that following the safety regulations has begun to wear a little thin, however they are imperative for the safety of our school community.
We will continue to follow the advice of the Health Department and Department of Education to ensure we remain safe and well and appreciate your support in enacting these requirements.
On the recent Student Free Day, teachers engaged in professional learning focussed on strengthening their abilities and understanding of how to develop students as assessment literate learners, further lifting aspirations and equipping them with lifelong learning skills. These aren’t just skills ‘for school’, but skills our students will need throughout their learning and working lives. We are working hard to develop the following characteristics in each of our Future Ready Learners:
Finally, as Term 3 draws to a close and the jacarandas come into their purple bloom to signify the beginning of the assessment period, I would like to wish our Year 12 students the best of luck with their final exams. As they enter this important phase of revision and preparation, I encourage them to continue to feed their wild and emotional brain needs so that they can switch on their smart brain and reach their full potential. Knowing how they learn best will not only help them during what is a significant educational period and milestone for them, but as they realise those big plans and bold ambitions beyond Shailer Park.
Good luck Year 12.

2021 Year 7 Enrolments
Enrolment Packs to be
submitted by Monday
5th October 2020.
Are you interested in enrolling for Year 7 in 2021?
Thank you to the many families who have already enrolled their children for 2021. Completing an early enrolment process is one of the most proactive things you can do to support your child’s transition from primary school to high school.
For those families living within our catchment area and for siblings of current students who have not yet done so, please collect a copy of the Enrolment Pack from our Administration Building or from our website through this link:
https://shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au/enrolments
I have enjoyed meeting all of our incoming students through the enrolment interviews that are currently booked. During these interviews, we check that all required documents are completed and I answer as many questions as possible about high school. This is when we also get to discuss your child’s personal learning needs and how we can best support your child’s transition into high school. These enrolment interviews will continue throughout Term 3 and 4 as enrolment packs are submitted and completed.
I wish all of our Academies applicants the best of luck through the Academy application process. For our Nexus & Altum applicants, the Big Thinkers’ Day is scheduled for this week. Best of luck in this next stage of the application process! Round 1 applications for the Sting Volleyball, Sting Futsal and Ignite Dance Academies will be considered by the respective Academy Directors in the upcoming weeks. Applicants will be informed of these outcomes in the near future! Good luck to all!
Supporting your child’s transition to high school
With the right kind of planning and support, the transition to high school can be an empowering time for your child. Here’s some ideas on how parents and families can help:
1. Get to know the school space
Familiarity helps to reduce anxiety. Use our Virtual School Tour (available on our school website soon) to help your child become familiar with our school site. Take advantage of the opportunity to participate in Orientation Day events, when they are available.
2. Make the leap with a few friends
A child’s confidence in social interactions with peers contributes to positive self-image and successful school transitions.
3. Identify clubs and interest groups for your child.
This can be an easy way to connect with others who have similar interests, while building a support network in a new school.
4. Help with planning and organisation
In high school, there’s an increased expectation for students to take responsibility for planning and organising themselves. This includes getting to class on time, handing in homework and assignments and coming prepared for exams. Talk with your child about how they can best organise themselves.
5. Organise a study schedule
Family support and parental engagement are linked to academic success. It’s important to start building study habits early, even if there is no assigned homework to do. Whatever the schedule, it’s also important to take breaks after school. Try to plan time carefully so that such work does not drag on and become demotivating.
6. Monitor your child’s stress
Even after settling into the new environment, getting to know teachers and their expectations and collecting a group of friends, the level of stress in high school can still be intense. Watch for signs stress in your child and let us know if you have an ongoing concern.
This is an exciting time in your child’s life to celebrate. Remember to take those wonderful photos to capture the entire experience.
Year 7 and Year 8 students
It’s time to choose your elective subjects for 2021
At Shailer Park SHS, our Year 7, 8 & 9 students choose their elective subjects in the Creative Industries Faculty and in the Technology Faculty. Students are encouraged to explore these Learning Areas by choosing subjects they are interested in and/or wish to experience.
This offers students an opportunity to expand their personal interests and talents while also providing the prospect to specialise in their personal interests and talents.
For our current Year 9 students:
Our Year 9 students have just participated in the JET planning process with Heads of Department and the Senior Schooling Team. This collaborative, detailed process prepares students for their senior secondary years of schooling (Yr 10, 11 & 12) and involves a review of student outcomes, career planning activities and a parent-teacher meeting. Congratulations to our Year 9 students and families for engaging in this process and for their high completion rates.
Over the next few weeks, our Year 7 and Year 8 students will be offered the chance to choose their electives for 2021.
For our current Year 8 students:
For Year 9 in 2021, each elective subject will be offered as a year-long program. Students choose their preferences of TWO subjects that they wish to study for the full year.
In 2021, the elective offerings for Year 9 are being expanded to include HPE and Outdoor Education. This new Outdoor Education program also has an additional levy. All subjects offered in the Creative Industries Faculty and the Technology Faculty are still included in the Year 9 elective offerings.
Students can choose any two subjects from all of the elective offerings listed on the 2021 Year 9 Elective Subject Selection Form. Students can make any combination of elective choices. This form will be given to students in Week 9 Term 3, Monday 7 September, with core messages provided during Assembly.
For our current Year 7 students:
For Year 8 in 2021, each elective subject will be offered as a semester-long program. The distinct units of work within each subject are not required as pre-requisites for later grades. In 2021, each Year 8 student must study:
- one subject from the Creative Industries Faculty
- one subject from the Technology Faculty
Please note that students can choose to do the same elective subject if they wish to specialise. Students will not be repeating the same unit because different content and skills will be covered in the Year 8 units of work.
Students are encouraged to carefully consider their preferences before completing the 2021 Year 8 Elective Subject Selection Form which will be given to students in Week 10 Term 3, Monday 14 September. Look out for core messages in House Care Group time and Assembly.
The next few weeks are an exciting time for our Junior Secondary students as we prepare for the 2021 school year. Ask as many questions as you need. Discuss your preferences with your parents and teachers. Enjoy the opportunity to consider what you would like to do.

A message from our Deputy Principal of Engagement
Nobody would deny that 2020 has been a challenging year. Many of us have concerns for elderly parents, our family’s health, our employment stability, our living arrangements and family and friends interstate and overseas. It is easy to put life on hold and just think ‘I wish things were different’ or ‘I will get back on track when this is all over’. But life is uncertain, and we don’t know when everything will be ‘back to normal’ – and many of us have discovered something about the world or ourselves during COVID that means the old normal will no longer work for us anyway.
At Shailer Park SHS, we explicitly teach our students that checking and connecting with other people is really important. It is vital that we learn to identify our feelings, know where to seek help and support, and also to be able to take steps yourself to facilitate your own wellbeing. These are life skills that we want our Shailer Park SHS students, as future ready learners, to possess.
As educators, and as families of young people, we need to also model self-care and self-regulation. It is fashionable for people to talk about ‘self-care’ – at Shailer Park SHS, we call this feeding your WILD and EMOTIONAL brains to activate your SMART brain. This can be scheduling some exercise, catch ups with friends and family, planning healthy and nourishing meals or doing something kind for others.
Feeding your WILD and EMOTIONAL brains isn't selfish, it is essential. There are many websites and organisations that support young people and their families to learn strategies. This month, staff are using a Self-Care September to remind ourselves that every person’s wellbeing is important. Action for Happiness is sharing a calendar, encouraging everyone to be kinder to themselves (as well as others), especially when things go wrong. Self-care increases our resilience and helps us get more out of life. It also helps us accept others as they are too.
http://www.actionforhappiness.org.au/
As we approach the end of term, please reach out to the Student Services Team to support your child’s engagement in learning. It is our privilege to support our young people to be resilient, relational, resourceful and reflective future ready learners.
We wish you a safe, restful and recharging holiday. See you in Term 4.

WEAR IT PURPLE DAY
Last Friday 28th August, Shailer Park SHS celebrated inclusivity and diversity within our school. Wear it Purple strives to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people.
Many students and staff wore a splash of purple to celebrate diversity and young people from the LGBTIQA+ community.
This event was held in our new area “The Plaza” and was a great success with music, tables of souvenirs, and positive conversations.
R U OK DAY?
R U OK Day is a national day of awareness that inspires and empowers everyone to ask 'Are you OK?' and support those who may be struggling or facing some challenges in life. It is a way to show kindness and support to those around us, and encourages Australians to connect with people who have emotional insecurity, to address social isolation and promote community cohesiveness. The Shailer Park High community celebrated this with events in the plaza – live music, sale of merchandise and delicious cupcakes as well as a sausage sizzle. Students showed excellent support for one another and raised awareness for a very important issue.

We continue to place importance on attendance, as we know this is clearly linked to achievement and success. We look at attendance each week on three levels – individual, house and school. Within each house, the House Care Group with the highest attendance will win a pizza party lunch on the last day of term. The competition for this is fierce, with the lead changing on a weekly basis. Students continue to gain points by participating in our House Showbie Challenges. The last few weeks have seen an increase in participation that has resulted in very close competition where the result couldn’t be called until the Sunday night when it closes. The winning house will earn a ‘reward day’ toward the end of the year. We encourage all students to commit to improving their attendance as well as continue to develop their sense of belonging within their house by participating in our house challenges.
As the conclusion of this term gets closer every day, the Student Services team would like to take the opportunity to wish all students, staff and families a safe break. Since term one we have had to adapt very quickly with the constant uncertainty of the current climate regarding COVID - 19.
The student services hub is available to assist families any way possible to ensure that your young adult has a smooth educational journey.
If your living circumstances change and you believe this will impact your child's education, please contact your relevant Head of House. Your Head of House will be more than happy to explore options in assisting and supporting your child.

Nexus and Altum Report, Term 3
The legendary leaders of Nexus and Altum, Ms Mullen and Ms Woods, have been working tirelessly to make semester 2 the best ever for the academic academies.
In Nexus, students had the opportunity to opt into the Junior Science Olympiad along with our Year 10 specialist science students on the 21st of August. All Nexus Math students competed in the Australian Math Competition between the 30th of July and 6th of August.
We also have a range of extension activities being incorporated into the learning this term across both subjects. In particular, in Year 8 science, students are engaging in research investigations into the ethics of certain scientific endeavours with an opportunity for them to debate their position, while Year 9 students will be creating prototypes or programs to help during Natural Disasters.
As for Altum, the plans for student-lead tutorials and Altum newsletter are well under way. Twice a term, Altum alumni in Year 10 will be invited into the junior Altum classes to run a 70 minute tutorial helping the younger students to break barriers they have identified in their learning.
The Altum newsletter, which is yet to be officially named, will be written by students in Altum who have an interest in journalism. The newsletter will be about anything and everything Altum, plus any interesting news in the social sciences community.

Jeans for Genes Day
The Jeans for Genes Foundation occurs around August-September of each year to spread awareness for people going through hardships in genetic illnesses. This foundation helps support funds for curing research of genetic diseases and helps to spread awareness across the world. On the 7th Of August at Shailer Park SHS, we showed our appreciation and support towards this foundation with the selling of denim scrunchies, lollies as well as busking with live music and fun activities such as pin the Jeans of the Jensen, as well as the teacher’s denim fashion show.

Students were to come to school in one piece of denim to share awareness and bring a gold coin donation. In total, our school has raised approximately $2,020. As a student leader, I haven’t seen our school community thrive and socialise as much as the Jeans for Genes day, which has helped not only bring our students together but reach out towards this worthy cause. All money donated will go towards this amazing foundation and help through the ongoing research into genetic disease cures for children.
Thank you leaders, staff and all Shailer Park students for this fantastic day.

Sting Futsal Academy
Futsal training and competitions are back in full swing; this means that our futsal teams had the opportunity to represent our school at a number of competitions across the term including Gold Coast Titles and SEQ Finals.
At Gold Coast Titles, our 19 boys and 13 girls progressed to the semi-finals which qualifies them for the next progressive competition held in October.
At SEQ finals, two of the four teams entered made the semi-finals, the 13 girls (who had already qualified from Gold Coast Titles) and the 15 boys gold team.
Congratulations to all the students and coaching staff involved; you represented the school with passion and pride and we couldn’t be more proud of you. We are beyond excited to have teams progress to State; a goal that we’ve been working hard to achieve for a number of years now.

Sting Volleyball Academy
Volleyball Academy students have had a very exciting return to training and competition this term. All teams have shown great enthusiasm in getting back on the court and have achieved some incredible results.
Our Senior Volleyball Academy students had a very short time frame to prepare for Senior Volleyball Schools Cup which was held on the 7-9th of August. Four teams were entered to play against high calibre teams from all over Queensland; below are their results.
Our Senior Girls team competed in Year 11 Division 1. They were undefeated on Friday, and after a close loss on Saturday, came back even stronger on Sunday. Our Senior Girls won their Semi Final and their Grand Final to bring home Gold Medals. Captain Aisha Barry was awarded Most Valuable Player in the Division.
Our Senior Boys team competed in Year 12 Division 1. After a successful Friday and Saturday morning, the boys made it into the top 4 where they progressed into the Semi Finals. After a close loss in their Semi Final, they fought hard and won their Final placing them in 3rd place bringing home Bronze Medals.
Two development teams were also entered into the tournament. A team made up of majority Grade 9 and 10 girls were entered into Year 11 Division 2; these girls played extremely well and ended up in the Final, fighting for the Bronze Medal, unfortunately the girls lost this game but ended up in 4th place which is an amazing achievement for all of them. Our development boys team, made up of Grade 9-11 boys, entered into Year 11 Division 2. These boys placed 9th in the Division, a fantastic achievement especially for those students who have recently joined the Volleyball Academy.
We are very excited to be taking our Year 7-10 students to Junior and Intermediate Volleyball Schools Cup on the 16-18th October. I look forward to bringing you their results once the competition wraps up.
I am so proud of the hard work our Academy students have put in despite the interrupted start to the year.

Ignite Dance Academy
As of week 1 Term 3, Dance Academy rehearsals finally returned! Although we temporarily stopped rehearsing due to COVID-19, we were quickly back and ready to learn new routines. We have enjoyed working with guest choreographers on our new dances and preparing for upcoming events.
Although all eisteddfods were cancelled this year, Dance Academy students have been working hard on a range of repertoire that has been filmed and entered into two online dance competitions. Results from these competitions will be announced in Term 4.
This week, Dance Academy students begin working on the Ignite Dance Academy Choreography Challenge. In this challenge, students choreograph their own dances in groups or as solos to perform at an internal competition. An adjudicator awards each routine a gold, silver, bronze or participation award, with the highest performing group or solo awarded the Young Choreographer of the Year Award at the end of the year. Students will be working on their choreography into term 4.

TAFE visit
Recently a TAFE Queensland Senior Coordinator visited our Year 12s to talk about pathways and options.
Lots of information was covered including: details on Diplomas, Certificate IV’s and Certificate IIIs, subsidies, scholarships and VET student loans.
Here is her feedback on our students:
I was very impressed with how well-mannered and mature your students were. I had some very grown up conversations with many of them.
The school has done a wonderful job with preparing the students for life after school.
Congratulations Year 12’s, we are so proud of you.
Catapult, young entrepreneur program
Recently, we wrapped up the first phase of the Catapult program where a select group of Year 11 students are taking part.
Catapult is a Logan City Council-led initiative and uses Project-Based Learning (PBL) to help students learn more effectively. Projects give students the chance to apply the skills they learn in school to relevant and real-world situations. Students also learn skills in PBL such as how to think critically, solve problems, work in teams, and make presentations. These skills will help students succeed in the future, both in school and in the work environment.
The students came together with Miss Gardiner and Ms Hussain for a two-day intensive workshop. Here they formed teams and used tools to develop an idea, understand the process of customer validation, marketing, revenue models and pitched their ideas to panellists consisting of Logan businesses and Councillors.
The students were then given feedback from the judges to further develop their projects over the next few months with the assistance of their business mentors and weekly workshops culminating in a showcase with fellow high schools in November.
Feedback from the facilitators on our students’ attitude towards the program was outstanding. The team were impressed with the enthusiasm and high-level aptitude of our students. Well done all involved!

Partnering with us
Shailer Park State High School values partnering with our community to ‘Lift Aspirations through Big Plans and Bold Ambitions for a Bright Future’. Working with parents and families of students is essential in strengthening educational outcomes. We respect that parents and families have different needs and therefore engagement with families is based on individual circumstances.
Please access our Partnership document on our website for detailed information:

Contact details
There are times when we may need to contact parents and carers. Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school on office@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au so we can update our records. These details include parent/carer’s name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details change.
Student Absences
Keeping our students safe is our priority. One important way families can partner to keep our children safe is to notify the school prior to 8:50am if your child will be absent via studentabsences@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au or (07) 3451 2766.
If your child is away from school and you have not let us know, parents will receive a text message requesting that you respond with a reason for the absence. It is extremely important that you respond to this text message promptly to enable us to follow up any possible issues.
The safety of students is of paramount importance to us and we take this responsibility very seriously. If you do not respond to this text message a second text message, email or phone call will be made to you. Thank you for partnering with us so that we know our students are safe.
