Newsletter Articles

A message from the Principal

I had written notes for what I intended to say in this newsletter over a week ago, but even since that time, so much in our situation here in Shailer Park and indeed across the world has evolved. It is impossible to continue on in this educational space as though it is ‘business as usual’, however, it is critical that we do continue to teach and learn.

Our collective and individual response to COVID-19 is being watched by our children and, as always, we are modelling how to react in such circumstances. Please remember that you are your child’s first teacher and that remaining calm and collected will help them to do so also.

I am receiving updates from Education Queensland and the Department of Health and am routinely passing these on to our Shailer Park families. The lines of communication are well and truly open and as such, I would urge our schooling community to remain calm and consider that events we view as being part of our normal daily life will be disrupted in the foreseeable future. Most importantly, I ask parents and students to take a measured and composed response to those disruptions.

I acknowledge and can feel the apprehension our parents and students have about the next few weeks. However, we have a wonderful community here at Shailer Park SHS and we will move through this concerning time together.

Back to those newsletter notes: this seems like an excellent time to share the positivity and exciting developments our school has been experiencing during Term 1.

During my regular walks through our classrooms, it has been a delight to see active learning happening everywhere; clear evidence of our dedication to developing ‘Future Ready learners’. Future Ready learners are the kinds of graduates we are committed to developing in our school, something which given the current world climate, is more important than ever. Through strong partnerships with industry, chamber of commerce, partners and research, Shailer Park SHS understands the kinds of skills and dispositions our young people need to live and thrive:

Future Ready learners are literate, numerate,
Resilient, Reflective, Resourceful and Relational.

We also understand that the development of Future Ready learners is enhanced by our partners (parents and wider community including business), our people (staff) and our place (sense of belonging and physical environment) which are all connected through the ‘glue’ of a strong Shailer Park SHS culture.

This Shailer Park SHS culture is something we have been nurturing over the past year, with house colours, competitions and assemblies and the daily check in during house care groups each morning working to develop a strong sense of belonging amongst our students. Feeling that sense of community, of belonging, care and camaraderie is always important for our students: it allows them to feel safe and supported so they can learn at their best. That strong sense of belonging is now more important than ever as we go about supporting each other in these uncertain times. It has been an absolute pleasure to see students actively taking part in our house events and even though our large house gatherings have been cancelled or postponed, I know the support our students feel within their house groups will continue.

I would also like to take this opportunity to share with you a number of capital works projects and infrastructure upgrades planned for 2020. This is incredibly exciting for Shailer Park SHS:

  1. A new 10-classroom building. Tenders closed for this on Wednesday, March 3 with construction planned to commence in June. All classrooms and staffrooms in this building will be air-conditioned!
  2. Upgrade to Security System. Our current security system will be upgraded to include all new facilities and an upgrade of the technology to provide enhanced security.
  3. Upgrade to Phone System. We will be upgrading our phone system in Semester Two, installing a phone in each classroom from 2021 through a phased approach. This reflects our commitment to provide our community with enhanced communication and access to support in each classroom.
  4. Internet network upgrades. We will be upgrading our network in Semester Two. This will provide enhanced internet speed and increased coverage across the school.
  5. Upcoming Sports Facility. We are continuing our work with the Department of Sports and Tourism in relation to the design of our new sports facility in partnership with Basketball Qld. Whilst construction is due to commence in June, we are still working toward finalising a design that reflects the needs of both parties.
  6. Upgrade to Speaker system. Semester Two also sees our speaker system upgraded to improve coverage across our campus. This will see enhanced outreach of bells, alarms and messages communicated across our school.

The IPS Council will focus their efforts to provide strategic advice to the school relating to the design of ‘our place’ and I look forward to sharing this strategic work of the council with you throughout 2020.

We are also continuing to work closely with our P&C in an effort to raise funds for the benefit of all students. Both major political parties have recently made promises in regards to air conditioning in schools, which we obviously welcome. However, it is important to note that as we approach a state election in October this year, this will have an impact on the timing of air conditioning installation before the summer months.

There is so much to feel positive about at Shailer Park SHS where we are constantly lifting the aspirations of our students. Again, I urge parents and students to practice a calm and measured response to the changes affecting our community at this time whilst staying up to date with relevant announcements.

Finally, as we approach the Easter break, enjoy this time of togetherness with your children and family.

Principal

A message from our Senior Schooling Deputy Principal

ENABLE cluster teacher recognition

Congratulations go to:

Trish Scott, James Barrago, Nicola Symons and Sharon Crosby

They have all been recognised in our ENABLE cluster this term for the outstanding work that they are doing in their area of the school. They all go above and beyond to support our young people and it gives us great pleasure to have them representing our school in this way.

Trish Scott - Humanities Teacher and Teacher Librarian

Trish is a hardworking and dedicated teacher. Her years of experience and wisdom are ever present in the classroom. She is always striving to improve her teaching and her own learning by engaging in numerous PDs, studying the latest information around supporting seniors under the new system and keeping up with the latest iPad work being conducted in our school. She consistently runs tutorials during lunch times and before school to support her senior students; this has resulted in 100% pass rates within all her ancient history classes. Trish is always engaged in feedback cycles and the DPP process, where she is highly reflective and always after feedback that will improved her teaching, and therefore the outcomes for her students. Regardless of how many years’ experience she has in the classroom, Trish is always striving for continued improvement and thus is a valuable asset within our Humanities faculty.

James Barrago – Science Teacher

James went above and beyond for his senior students to provide support through their first formative IA1. He has designed authentic and creative real life experiences for his senior LIFT class in response to student voice feedback. As a new member of the Shailer Park family, he has quickly embodied the Shailer Way showing a lot of care for staff and students alike. He is a highly professional teacher who takes pride in doing his job well in the Science & Health faculty.

Nicola Symons – Special Education Teacher

Nicola works collaboratively with many teachers across the school to design curriculum and differentiate for a wide variety of students. She develops innovative and well thought out resources which she shares with teachers across the school. She takes the time to build relationships with students and provides after school tutoring for those students requiring additional support.

Sharon Crosby – Scientific Officer

Sharon is the lady who makes Science happen! She prepares the practical equipment for teachers to utilise in their classrooms (this is a considerable amount of work with 700ish junior students), she also provides constant support and ideas on how to engage students practically in our subject. She regularly deals with last minute requests and the daily demands of a school with a constant smile.

Senior information workshops

Senior students and their families are welcome to join me in Sapphires during Term 2 for some workshops. Please see flyer for details.

A message from our Guidance officer

At Shailer Park State High School we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.

You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

We are sending you a pocket card from Bullying. No Way! with tips on what to do if your child talks to you about bullying. Parents know their children best and know the best way to tailor communication to their needs. Adapt these tips to what works for you and your child.

If your child talks to you about bullying:

  1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
  2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
  3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
  4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
  5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s Head of House and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
  6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

If you are looking for support for yourself to deal with a bullying situation, you will find ideas on the Bullying. No Way! website for parents. As well, please feel free to contact the school if you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to preventing bullying.

Thanks for your support to make Shailer Park State High School
a great school for everyone.

A message from the Heads of House

House assemblies

House assemblies have become an integral part in developing our house culture and spirit here at Shailer Park High. While each house has their own individual assembly each week, this year has seen the introduction of a whole school House Spirit Assembly. Each house comes together to celebrate the wonderful achievements and events that our students are engaged in. It gives us the opportunity to shine a light on student successes that may otherwise go unnoticed. Each house assembly is run by two houses with the House Leaders leading the way. Our school Sports Captain Corey, not only gives us a wrap up of our sporting achievements, but also shines the light on individuals and their successes outside of school. Each term for our inter-house challenge we have lunchtime trivia. This contributes to our overall house points tally that was also launched this term. Our P & C also gets to students involved with an interactive presentation of their latest fundraising venture. A highlight is also shone on our CAST activity for the week, showcasing student engagement. The finale of our House Spirit Assembly has become the highly anticipated House Challenge. This creates much excitement and is great to hear all houses cheering on their representative. All Heads of House have been devising some great challenges for our future assemblies that we know will entertain the masses.

House Points System

This year brings a fantastic opportunity to extend the house rivalry into new avenues. Best described by the students and staff as a “Harry Potter vibe” the houses are able to earn points each week. Currently, students are able obtain house points through attendance and engagement in house events (Lunchtime trivia and challenges on house parades every fortnight). The overall house that has obtained the most points over Term 1 and 2 will be rewarded with an option of their selection. The winning house will all be invited to the event they vote for, some suggestions from students are hiring out a cinema in the afternoon, having a BBQ lunch or attending an indoor trampoline park.

The house that is leading at the end of term 1 will get to vote on what they wish to do, provided they can maintain the lead until the end of term 2. If another house overtakes the lead in points, they will get to claim the prize.

Please see the table below with the current standings.

Congratulations to Bilin Bilin house who are currently in the lead on 64 points! The competition is still close with only 10 points separating all of the houses. A special congratulations to Louie Lara in Year 12 who consumed a dry Weetbix the quickest on the whole school House Spirit Assembly to score Bilin Bilin an 5 extra points, followed by Mr. Yabsley who flew the furthest with his paper plane to score Karle house 5 points on the second whole school House Spirit Assembly.

Best of luck to all of the houses over the next few weeks. Don’t forget that anyone, at any time, could be asked to compete in a house challenge to earn extra points.

Wild Brain Cafe

Another initiative that has been very successfully launched is our Wild Brain Café. In order for our students to access their smart brain, they first need to feed their wild brain. Our Attendance Officer Mr Jacob Johnson and our fantastic Student Services Officer Mrs Lynne Grimes, happily facilitate this each morning, Monday to Thursday here at Student Services. Not only do students get to feed their wild brain, it gives not only them, but staff as well, the opportunity to build relationships and strengthen connections with each other.

Please note some activities are currently on hold due to Department of Education directives.

All Heads of House are excited to see the engagement and participation of students in the many activities we have on offer that continue to grow and develop our House culture and school spirit

Student Leadership

The vision of the Student Leadership for 2020 is that we believe that all students have the capacity to lead within our school culture and we aim to develop individuals to have big plans and bold ambitions for a bright future.

This term saw the introduction of our 2020 student leaders. Being a leader is a commitment and these dedicated individuals have made a commitment to our school and more importantly to the student body. School Captains, House Leaders, Year Level representatives, CAST, Academies and Music Captains were announced at a Leadership and badging ceremony, where the year the 12 cohort made a pledge to the wider student community. Already these students have been hard at work. Their first fundraising opportunity was Valentine’s Day; students raised $180 for The Centre for Women Co here in Logan, a centre that offers support for families experiencing domestic violence. All student leaders had the opportunity to attend the Grip Leadership Conference. Students engaged in topics like setting leadership priorities, making meetings effective, leading exciting events, leading a team of my peers, leading with engaging speeches and developing positive partnerships with teachers. It was a successful and exciting day for all of the Student Leadership team to come together in a number of workshops with practical ideas to then bring back to school and develop skills. Some of our female leaders also had the pleasure of attending the International Women’s Day Breakfast hosted by Soroptimist International. SI Beenleigh focuses on the education and empowerment girls, believing education and leadership will inspire better futures for our young women. This year’s theme was Generation Equality students listened to an inspirational keynote speaker, Kathryn Lyons CEO of Accessibility=t Organisation and learnt about the power of equity and equality. The student leaders have many exciting events and plans on the horizon, though due to unforeseen circumstances these plans have been placed on hold, for now. Specifically, our Harmony Week celebrations. This important time will not be missed by our school and will be revisited in Term two. We congratulate the student leaders on their passion, commitment and dedication to our Shailer Park community.

Messages from our Academies

Academic Excellence Academies

2020 has welcomed New Year 7 NEXUS and ALTUM students into the Academic Excellence Academy.

This term has already seen students from both academies participate in an Incursion Day, providing them with an opportunity to collaborate with students across all three year levels. Lead by the Directors of the Extraordinary, students engaged in an escape room style challenge centred around a train heist. As part of this challenge, students had to demonstrate their relational skills by interacting with new people and their resourcefulness by solving problems. The second half of the day saw students rotate through two targeted activities relating to STEM skills and exploring ethical and moral dilemmas.

The STEM activity required groups to consider the impact of natural disasters on communities and construction, with a focus on surviving different types of disasters. The groups constructed a building to withstand earthquakes and typhoons within budget guidelines.

All students then engaged in an ALTUM focussed challenge. As part of this task, students collaborated to design a creative presentation in response to a philosophical statement:

We will work towards making our world fairer for everyone and we will plan and coordinate our actions in order to achieve our goals.

Students created art pieces, dramatic performances and short films that grappled with the concept what constitutes fairness in today’s social landscape.

ALTUM Update

This year has seen the official launch of the ALTUM Academy. Whilst in previous years, the NEXUS program has catered for those with a keen interest in Maths and Science, our Academic Excellence team saw an opportunity to develop a program that supported the needs of students with a passion for English & Humanities.

ALTUM is a Latin word meaning deep, deeply, high or above. This notion of deep thinking is at the core of our vision, in addition to the wider focus of our excellence program which includes: collaborative and inquiry based learning, real world application and the integrated use of IT.

ENABLE Debating Training Day

A number of ALTUM students across years 7-9 participated in the ENABLE Debating Training Day earlier this term. Our junior debaters had the opportunity to learn alongside 100 students form local schools in the Logan area. They received valuable training delivered by the Queensland Debating Union and a number of staff from the ENABLE Debating Network. The workshops covered debating structure, effective rebuttal, as well as teamwork and communication skills.

NEXUS Update

INNOVATE MENTORING PROGRAM

Our Year 7 NEXUS students are engaging in the 2020 ABCN Shailer Park SHS & Visionstream Innovate Mentoring program. This activity provides students with four opportunities over the term to complete different STEM challenges working with their groups and mentors. The mentors are professionals who work in different roles within STEM workplaces. This provides students with collaboration skills to work with others and also some real life experience and context.

ANSTO Webinar

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is Australia's national nuclear research and development organisation, and the centre of Australian nuclear expertise. ANSTO is the leading provider of nuclear medical imaging in Australia. Both Year 9 NEXUS classes had the opportunity to participate in a video conference with an ANSTO facilitator as part of their current science unit. The students engaged in discussions and activities to enhance their understanding of isotopes, half-life and radioactive decay.

Ignite Dance Academy

The Ignite Dance Academy students have had a busy start to 2020! At the beginning of the term students engaged in workshops covering a range of dance genres, including partnering technique and ballet repertoire with teaching artists from Queensland Ballet, jazz technique with guest teacher Miss G, and contemporary technique with Ms Millar. During these sessions students were exposed to new styles of dance and new ways of learning choreography. Some of us spent some time in the Learning Pit, however with some resilience and resourcefulness we all made it out in the end.

In recent weeks, students have had the privilege of working with a guest choreographer from Raw Dance to learn a Musical Theatre piece inspired by the musical Aladdin. Whilst challenging, our students have enjoyed perfecting the technicality and nuance of this piece and look forward to performing it at eisteddfods and events over the course of this year.

In other exciting news, all dance academy students who auditioned for this year’s Creative Generation production have been selected as massed or featured dances in the show. Special congratulations go to A. Dyer, who was cast in the Middle Ensemble, and E. McDonald, who was cast in the CGEN Dance Company – a huge honour for a student who is only in Year 10. We look forward to seeing these dancers, alongside some Shailer Park musicians, light up the Brisbane Convention and Entertainment Centre this July.

As director, I look forward to continuing to work with our brilliant dancers throughout the year and seeing just how much they can achieve.

Sting Futsal Academy

South East Queensland Futsal Competition

Recently, our Futsal Academy students participated in the South East Queensland Futsal Titles. SEQ Titles is the largest progressive tournament of the year which sees students applying the skills they’ve developed in the first part of the year on the court against some challenging competition.

In 2019, 3 teams progressed through to the Finals; it is with great pride that I can announce that this year, 4 teams finished as the top team in their age group and have progressed to the Finals: 12 boys, 13 girls, 16 girls and one of our 15 boy’s teams. These amazing results further emphasis the elite teaching and learning occurring in our Academy programs.

I would like to thank all the staff, parents and friends who not only supported our Academy at the competition but who work behind-the-scenes organising fruit and healthy snacks, drinks and managing teams on the day.

I would also like to give a special mention to the tournament Most Valuable Players, Harmony McLeod and Shakylle Ngenda. SEQ was Harmony’s first Futsal competition with Shailer Park SHS as she is in Year 7. Although Harmony is only 12 years of age, she outperformed her 14 year old competition. Shakylle would be considered a small keeper for his age group, however most would not be able to tell. Shakylle’s performance on the day was exceptional and contributed to his 15 boys’ team making it through to the playoff stage.

In additional news our Futsal Captain, Kenneth Wilkinson, has been successful in cementing his place in the South Coast 17-19 boys Football team. Kenneth has also secured the role of Captain in the Logan Lightning under 20s squad, even though he is still 17 years of age. This is a huge opportunity and privilege for Kenneth! Congratulations Kenneth, we’re looking forward to seeing great things from you in your future.

Rivers Championship Day - Volleyball

2020 has proven to be a successful start for the Sting Volleyball Academy.

On Wednesday 4th March, the Year 7-12 Sting Volleyball Academy boys represented Shailer Park State High School at Rivers Championship Day. After both of our senior boys’ teams dominated their respective pools, they ended up coming head to head in a Shailer Park vs Shailer Park grand final. The Year 12 boys ended up taking out the match, gaining a gold medal and an invite to the Gold Coast Finals. The Year 7/8 team gained some fantastic experience, for some being their first ever volleyball tournament, while the Year 8/9 team finished in a very strong 4th place. Overall it was a very successful day and a great start to 2020 for our Sting Volleyball Academy.

Beach Volleyball Schools Cup

On Sunday 8th and Monday 9th March, 10 of our Volleyball Academy students attended the 2020 Beach Volleyball Schools Cup to play against schools from all over Queensland. The students showed incredible resilience, playing the first day in incredibly hot conditions and then the second day in heavy rain. Benjamin Lee (Yr11) and Zaine Koeneman (Yr9) played in the Senior Boys Division 2 and won the Silver Medal. They played against mostly Year 12 students and were undefeated until the grand final which they lost by only 1 point. Aliyah McNichol, Ashleigh Faulkner, Brooke Davidson and Karlai Warner (Yr8s) competed in the Year 7/8 fours and won the Bronze Medal in their first ever beach competition. The girls dominated with their strong overarm serves. Aisha Barry (yr11) and Allegonda Zeydel (Yr10) took on a challenge and played in the Senior Girls Division 1 against mostly Year 12 students, many of which were QLD beach players. They had a challenging start until they found their rhythm and won all their games on the Monday. Tameka Sheehan (Yr10) and Shairmaine Zeydel (Yr9) competed in the Year 9/10 Intermediate division and won half of their games in their first ever beach competition.

On Thursday 12th March, Aisha Barry, Allegonda Zeydel, Benjamin Lee and Jordan Daniels were all successful in being selected for their respective U/19 South Coast Volleyball teams.

We look forward to our next competition being Intermediate Schools Cup in May.

QKR APP FOR CANTEEN PURCHASES

To continue to supply our school community with food daily from our Canteen, we request that all students order via QKR or pay via eftpos. These payment methods will allow us to serve more effectively and ensure that we can access adequate food supplies. We are encouraging our community to cease the use of cash where possible. Thank you for your support.

This easy-to-use mobile app for iPhones and Android smartphones makes school payments a breeze. Qkr provides a flexible option to pay for non-invoiced items such as canteen lunch orders and activities including breakfast and lunch specials through our restaurant, Sapphires. Payments for P&C fundraising activities and events such as pie drives, raffles, and sausage sizzles will also be processed using Qkr.

AGM goes online

Dear members and supporters of our P&C,

Given the current climate, we have decide to use ‘Zoom’ (an online video conferencing site) for our AGM next Tuesday night. Please go to www.zoom.us/signup to create an account. Then email pandc@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au with your log in email so you can receive an invite to join the conversation on Tuesday, 24 March.

In adhering to many directives from Education Queensland and Health and in consultation with our Principal, we are cancelling our committee that normally follows the AGM and the AGM will be conducted via video conferencing. It is still very important that you continue to support us by being ‘present’/online at the meeting as we need numbers for the meeting to go ahead.

The main agenda items at an AGM are

  • elect executive positions,
  • accept the audited financial reports,
  • accept all new and renewing members for this year
  • re-elect the auditors for next year.

Please access important documents

  • Nomination form for executive position (don’t forget we do have a position vacant so we need you!)
Fill out, get necessary signatories, and return to the P&C secretary via pandc@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au

Containers for Change Scheme number C1008 1080.

The student leaders for 2020 are still working on their roster for collecting from staffrooms. We really appreciate those of you who are actively promoting this. Last year, in the 9 months of collecting, we made over $5000! If a container has ‘10c collection’ written on it, it’s eligible!

Our executive team can be contacted via email pandc@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au. We welcome all new members. Please go to the P&C section of our School website for more information.

2020 Next Step survey

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual state-wide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2019. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.

Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Thank you for your support of the Next Step survey in 2020.

Further information on Next Step is available online below or on toll free telephone 1800 068 587.
