A message from the Principal
Welcome back to Term 4! I hope all our families had a restful break, carving out some time to spend together and recharge their batteries for what is a particularly demanding time of year. We kicked the term off beautifully as our students and staff returned to a wonderfully presented campus, with works around the school including newly installed water bubblers, cleared trees and carpet cleaning over the term break. This clean and tidy environment not only fosters learning, but a renewed sense of pride and care for our school. Something as ‘simple’ as a refreshed looking campus has helped students to get ready to cross the line of opportunity and switch on to learning every morning, a process which is never more crucial than now as we consolidate our learning. There is still so much to be done this term, with studies, celebration and well-being continuing right through to the end of year.
Term 4 is significantly steeped in school traditions and celebrations, ones which help us to applaud our high achievers and commend those who have done their best to make Shailer Park State High School an outstanding place to learn. This term we look forward to hosting our major events of the Year 12 Graduation, the Year 12 Formal, Awards Night and house celebration events including our swimming carnival plus many more. It’s hectic, but the feel-good moments for our students, parents, teachers, staff and the entire Shailer Park community are just fantastic. Acknowledging our students when they have achieved those big plans and bold ambitions is one of the most rewarding parts of being a teacher, student, parent, school principal… it feels great for everyone! We encourage our community to get involved in these wonderful celebrations of Shailer Park’s outstanding young people and their achievements.
Also of significance within the term’s calendar is our annual Well-being Expo to be held in Week 8. Hosting this event is an important exercise in raising awareness of and signifies our strong commitment to student well-being and its connection to learning. The visible reminders across our school to check in and connect using our 5 faces and 3 brains frameworks have cultivated a common language that we use in our school to talk about being well. Having ‘words’ and ways to talk about feelings is so important; sometimes it is hard to communicate to those who care exactly what or how it is we feel, whether that be frustrated, afraid, embarrassed or even hungry! All of this impacts on the ability of our children to switch on to learning. We encourage families to adopt this language at home too as part of the collaborative approach to ensuring our students are learning, happy and well.
Outside our classrooms, the Shailer Park SHS community continues to support and encourage our school. I’d like to thank our P&C for their annual Trivia Night Fundraiser, which was not only a lot of fun and allowed the development of networks between parents, staff and the community, but the funds raised will directly benefit our school and students. A special thanks to the P&C executive team for their organisation of the event and to those members of our school community who came along to support it. We look forward to hearing from our P&C soon about the success of the night’s fundraising.
Our students are also wonderful fundraisers, contributing time, effort and ultimately funds to the air conditioning of our school. Student are recycling cans and bottles and are appealing to our whole school community to get involved. If every student in our school recycles just 5 items per week, we have the potential to raise $100 per week which equates to $4000 per year. This would allow us to air-condition one classroom. Imagine what is possible if our whole school community became involved! Additionally, we thank parents who have made donations toward our air conditioning fund and encourage others to consider making a donation to help us achieve our goal of air-conditioning our classrooms. On another note, I’d like to say how proud I am of those older students who, unfortunately, won’t benefit directly from any of the funds raised since the likelihood of air-conditioning being rolled out through our entire school is still quite a way off. Yet, they are helping and putting the effort in, not for themselves, but for the greater good of future generations of Shailer Park students. This is our strong school culture of pride and camaraderie at work!
Cultivating passion, like that for cool air on a hot summer’s day, has been a topic I’ve been speaking to students about lately. Research tells us that happiness is in fact like a muscle, that we need to feed it and we need to grow it, something we can do through staying connected with positive people. Additionally, finding our passion and a sense of purpose is shown to significantly improve our levels of happiness. It is important to note that we are not born with passion, rather, the development of passion takes tenacity, experimentation and a willingness to work hard. It sounds strange, but passion does not come naturally, but is something that needs to be developed. As a school principal, I didn’t wake up one day in my late teens and suddenly think, “An educator with a rich knowledge of the benefits of well-being based on scientific fact as a means of solidifying the learning and lifting the aspirations of young people so that they might accomplish amazing things… Yes, that’s what I’ll be passionate about.” No. I have always loved learning, this grew into a need to find out more about how we learn which in turn, has grown into a passion for education. I certainly didn’t finish Year 12 feeling as passionate about schools as I do now! It is important that our young people approach school as an apprenticeship for life, where they can cultivate their passions. Finding their passion means that we as parents and a community need to encourage young people to get involved, be active and engage with the opportunities provided to them.
Shailer Park SHS students are in an enviable position. Not only do they attend a school staffed with dedicated and professional teachers in a wide range of subject areas, but they are supported in their learning through a whole-school focus on well-being, excellence and academy programs, industry partners and a wide range of staff whose sole purpose is to help your child succeed and achieve within school so that they can thrive outside of school. We want our students to be ‘Future Ready’, equipped with the dispositions and skills to lead a life of choice, not chance. Our 4Rs (Resilient, Reflective, Resourceful and Relational) support our young people to be well positioned to thrive. Additionally, industry partners highlight that they are seeking young people in their workforce who demonstrate these 4Rs, a great confirmation of the important work we are doing here at Shailer Park SHS. As always, parent support of our policies and procedures goes a long way in cementing that work: getting our students ‘Future Ready’ is a collaborative partnership between school and home. As graduation for the 2019 Year 12s and thoughts of life beyond school begin to cross the minds of students throughout the year levels, now is an excellent time to have conversations with your child about what that future might look like.

A message from our Senior Schooling Deputy Principal
Shailer Park State High is blitzing the new QCE system!
2019 has been a very special year for Shailer Park State High School and Education Queensland as a whole. Essentially when it comes to senior school, we have had to have a foot in two very different systems. While we have been guiding our Year 12s through the final year of the OP (Overall Position) system, we have also been supporting our Year 11 students through the very first year of the new QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education). This has been an enormous body of work for our staff and I have been very proud of how our senior teachers and faculty Heads of Department have navigated through this massive curriculum change while always keeping the needs of our students at the forefront of their minds. Our students are very lucky to have such a highly skilled and passionate group of staff guiding their learning.
This has also been the first year for our 3-year senior program, with Year 10 finally receiving the recognition it needed at the foundation for Year 11 & 12 and we are already seeing a pleasing increase in outcomes from our Year 10s in their foundational classes.
Next year we are very excited to be offering a total of four specialised vocational packages across Year 10 and 11- Trade Ready, Tech Ready, Health Ready and Event Ready. These packages are unique to Shailer Park and the pathways that have been shaped from our initial packages have already seen our students leading into fantastic post schooling opportunities. See the link below for more information on our Vocational Career Ready Programs and application form.

Final weeks for our Year 12s
Our current Year 12s have only a few weeks left of their schooling journey and we have some great programs, and experiences planned for them before they leave us and embark on their new journey into post school education or employment. It is always mixed feelings for the senior team as we get to this part of the year and watch our students finish their final assessments, attend their final classes and say their final goodbyes. We reflect on the progress that they have made and the lessons that they have learnt both in and out of the classroom during their time at high school.
I look forward to celebrating with each and everyone one of them at the upcoming formal and graduation ceremonies.

Shailer Park SHS students are taught to be Resilient, Reflective, Resourceful and Relational and there is so much happening in Term 4 that provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate our 4Rs.
Paul Kelly – Live at Shailer Park SHS:
The Student Services Team is very excited to announce that acclaimed singer-songwriter Paul Kelly will be visiting Shailer Park High School in November for a very special event for staff and selected students celebrating the power of poetry to transform lives. This exclusive event has been brokered with Penguin Random House Australia as part of his publicity tour for his new book, Love is Strong as Death: Poems Chosen by Paul Kelly, and will provide a unique experience for our students to engage with both classic and contemporary works of poetry via a unique performance featuring music and words performed by Paul Kelly and his accompanist Alice Keath.
From Shakespeare and WB Yeats to Walt Whitman and Dylan Thomas, from Gwen Harwood and Sylvia Plath to Dennis Glover and Les Murray, the book includes works of poetry that speak to the two great themes of literature that have proven so powerful in Paul Kelly’s own music: love and death – and everything in between. During this 50 minute event Paul Kelly will sing and recite poems that have brought him joy and inspiration throughout his life and share stories from his own experiences to challenge and inspire our students to make poetry their lifetime friend.
Students will have an opportunity to pre-purchase copies of Paul Kelly’s poetry anthology prior to the event. For more info on Paul Kelly’s new book visit:
https://www.penguin.com.au/books/love-is-strong-as-death-9781760892685
Students who participate in the music and choral programs, and all Year 9-11 students, as well as students from other local schools will be meeting Paul and experiencing poetry with him.
The Ponytail Project
We are very proud of four amazing Year 7 relational and resourceful students who are raising money for The Ponytail Project, which raises money for cancer research and the creation of wigs for patients who have lost their hair during treatment. This is a cause the students feel deeply about as their lives have been touched in some way by cancer. Being resourceful young people, they chose to do something about it and through lots of promotion and hard work, they have already raised $1651.78. The Ponytail Project involves raising money by promising to cut off your hair, so these brave students are asking their favourite teachers to cut off their very long ponytails in front of the school in Week 7, on assembly. These students will visit House Care Groups in the coming weeks, and the HCG who raises the most money between now and the end of Week 7 will be rewarded with a pizza party for their lunch. You can also donate online at the link below and search for The Shailer Park High team. Remember, Shailer Park students are RELATIONAL and care about others – please donate what you can.

We are so proud of these amazing Shailer Park kids – congratulations Shantelle and Scarlett (Bilin Bilin), Chloe (Barnes) and Keeley (Karle).

FAREWELL YEAR TWELVES
The Student Services Team would like to congratulate our Year 12 students on the completion of their schooling. We thank them for their vision and leadership in helping us to create the House System that we proudly launched this year. The student body have reported that they value the relationships that our multi-age care groups have allowed them to forge throughout all year levels, and the input and energy of our Year 12s is much appreciated and will be missed. We wish the Year 12s health, happiness and success in their futures, and we look forward to celebrating this very important time in their lives as we farewell them into the world.
The Student Services Team look forward to supporting all Shailer students to finish the year strong. We have a few new additions to welcome to our team, in a new Youth Support Coordinator and an Engagement Officer, and there will be further information about this in our next newsletter.
Have a great month.

A message from our Dean of Studies
This time of year marks the beginning of an extremely busy assessment period for all of our students. It is important that all of our students are feeling prepared and confident for all of their upcoming assessments. There are a few things that all of our students can do to help during this period.
1. Pick a place and time
Everyone has their own idea about the best place and time to study. Whether it's their bedroom at night or the library after school, they should find a study space and a regular study time that works for them and stick with it.
- Set up the study space – the study space should be quiet, comfortable and distraction-free.
- Find the best time – Some people work better in the morning. Others work better at night. Work out which time suits your student and plan to study then. Don't study much later than their usual bedtime – pushing late at night can make them too tired to study properly.
2. Study every day
If each student studies a little bit every day they will be continually reviewing things in their mind. This helps them understand things. It also helps them avoid the stress of last-minute cramming.
3. Plan study time
It helps to have some plans in motion so they can make the most of their study time.
- Set alarms – Set alarms to remind them about your study plans.
- Use a wall planner – Stick a calendar or wall planner up so they can see it whenever they are meant to be studying. Mark it up with important dates, like exams and assignment due dates. Use it to block out regular study timetable too.
4. Review and revise
At least once a week, students should go back over the things they have studied in class. Thinking things over can help them to understand the concepts and help them remember when they need them the most.
- Make their own study materials – They can think up some practice exam questions or create their own flash cards to help them study. This way they will learn it all twice: once when they make the study materials and once when they use them to revise.
5. Ask for help
If they are stuck on something, or something just does not seem to make sense, they should always ask for help. Students can talk to their teachers about the things they do not understand.
These are just a few tips to help our students throughout this busy period.

A message from the Heads of House
School Wide Community Project
(Food Hampers for Those in Need)
This term marks the start of a new community project run across houses. What we are planning is to prepare hampers of non-perishable food in our House Care classes. This project is in partnership with the Hyperdome who is partnering with the Lighthouse Organisation to help those in need, much like our Sleep Out fundraiser previously.
Students are encouraged to get involved and contribute what they can. All it takes is the school community binding together so that we can make a huge difference – being relational and resourceful. All House Care classes should now be working on their lists and contributions. Week 6 is the big week to collect it all.
House Challenges – Handball Success
Our first round of the Handball House Challenge was a huge success with approx. 90-100 students taking to the courts and supporting their House. We also had a few energetic and competitive teachers too!!!
Have a look at the amazing turn out, the fun and concentration that these students had in our first week. Thank you to our House captains for their assistance in their organisation of the friendly competition.
All students and staff are welcome next Friday at first break for Round 2.
Congratulations goes to Karle House as they are currently in the lead, followed closely by Francis!

Nexus
At the end of last term, all Academic Excellence students attend the Queensland University of Technology where they took part in a range of critical thinking activities in and around the university. Students were asked to solve the complex problem of the ‘Sharknado’ whilst taking on a variety of different roles. Students had a fantastic day of learning where they worked on their relational skills and resourcefulness.
This term, our Year 9 English Extension class attended the ABCN Future Thinkers Program, at VisionStream. Students has the opportunity to engage with the Design Thinking Process whilst collaborating with their peers and a range of mentors from VisionStream. Students used a range of critical and creative thinking skills to come up with innovative solutions to problems. What an amazing opportunity for our students.

This term, in 7B humanities, we have been studying water in our world. We have also been posting postcards to other people around the world using postcrossing. We received our first postcard back this week from Japan which was filled with information about Japan and their different interactions with water. We are looking forward to receiving many more postcards.
Jesse Neads, 7B student.
Thank you to all of our dedicated Academic Excellence staff who have made all of the above possible!

Six of our Futsal Academy teams competed at the Summer State Titles which was facilitated by the Australian Futsal Association at the Hibiscus Sport Centre.
All of our students represented our school with pride and played exceptionally well.
The day was a huge success; our 16 girls team secured the runners up medal and our 12 boys, 14 boys gold and 16 boys were crowned champions, bringing home the gold medal.

Congratulations to Mr Croucher, Mr Aslim, the futsal coaching team and all students involved in State Titles for your success at this event.

Over the weekend, three of our Junior Volleyball Academy teams competed in their biggest tournament of the year - Junior Schools Cup. This state-wide event saw some of the best volleyball schools in Queensland compete for the title of 'Queensland Schools Cup Champions'.
Our Year 7/8 boys worked extremely hard in the lead-up to this tournament and have improved dramatically throughout the year; especially throughout term 3. Despite the majority of the team playing up a division, they finished in 8th place overall.
Our Year 8 girls team, who have focused on improving their performance over the last few months, saw that hard work pays off! This team went undefeated right up until the last two games of the tournament and finished in 4th place overall. A special mention to Allegonda Zeydel who volunteered to be the assistant coach of Mr Tannahill throughout the tournament.

Our year 7 girls were extremely nervous going into this tournament and decided that it was best to take the tournament one small step at a time. They have been training extremely hard over the last two terms, and their progress has been phenomenal! A special mention to Brooke Davidson who, despite being injured and unable to play, supported her team at every single game to run game statistics and draw up game plans for her team!

We are proud to announce that our year 7 girls were victorious in their gold medal match on the final day of competition – they brought home the gold and are now rightfully sitting as number 1 in the state for their division. Congratulations to Mr Renton and the year 7 girls for your enormous success.

Biology Camp
Year 11 students have completed their mandatory field hours for senior Biology with a trip to Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre. Students completed their mandatory practical experiments with a seagrass snorkel and plankton trawl. Thanks to the team at Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre, students were able to use state of the art digital equipment for abiotic and biotic factor monitoring and transect sampling. Students enjoyed their two days away and were ready for a restful weekend when they got back. A special thank you to Mr Andoniadas for his hard work making the camp a success! We are the first school to complete these new series of camp activities for the new senior syllabus.
Science Olympiad
On Wednesday of Week 1 Term 4 we had the opportunity to host our fourth annual Science Olympiad. Over 100 year 6 students from 4 of our local primary schools - Loganholme, Shailer Park Primary, Carbrook and Kimberley Park participated in 6 STEM group challenges. It was a great day for all involved.
3rd place went to Shailer Park 12, 2nd place to Loganholme 1 and 1st place was won by Kimberley Park 2.
The overall school champions for 2019 went to Carbrook Primary, with their teams’ average securing them the top prize.
We would like to thank all the attendees and their accompanying teachers, the Science Ambassadors and Science teachers running the events, and a special mention to our Lab Technicians - Deb, Annette and Jade for making it such a successful day.

AFL Queensland Visits
Our Year 7 Physical Education students have been studying Indigenous games and their link to AFL in Term 4 2019. In order to further develop their skills AFL Queensland have sent ambassadors to run sessions with the students every lesson for the next 3 weeks. Students have enjoyed the sessions so far and look forward to working with Matt and his team of AFL experts for the next few weeks!

Year 8 Skipping
Our Year 8 Physical Education students have been investigating the world of professional skipping as part of their rhythm and movement studies. Students have worked as individuals, in small teams and in large groups to challenge themselves to master skipping tricks. Over the next few weeks of Term 4 students will be working in small teams to choreograph a skipping routine to rival the professionals! We look forward to watching their creations!
