A message from the Principal

As the end of Term 3 approaches, I would like to congratulate everyone in our schooling community. Through hard work, diligence and a combined effort to change the way we look at ourselves, the way we think about learning and the way we work together, Shailer Park State High School has begun to flourish in new and exciting ways. Those big plans and bold ambitions are coming to fruition and we are shining bright! Our list of great achievements is always growing and amongst the hard slog that characterises Term 3, I’d like to celebrate some of our most recent student and schooling community accomplishments as a reminder that effort is always rewarded with success.

Our Dance Academy, Futsal, Volleyball teams have absolutely dominated their competitions, but as that famous quote says, “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game,” and our students have been playing the ‘game’ like absolute champions. The team work and dedication these students have shown over the past term has been exceptional: I am so proud of the way in which they have accepted and demonstrated Resilient, Relational, Reflective and Resourceful behaviours within our academies and competitions. They have all worked so hard to develop and grow in order to achieve their best and in doing so, are excellent examples of our school values.

Additionally, term 3 has seen our students engage in a range of pioneering learning opportunities with a range of partners including PCYC with the Girls Lead Program, the Beacon High Impact Program, ABCN Mentoring Programs and Innovate Stem Program. Furthermore, our successful JET and SET planning conversations with parents and students in years 9 and 10 continue to forge productive relationships and personalised pathways for our young people.

I would also like to congratulate our entire schooling community, with the news of our innovative and positive approach to developing the whole child and our focus on well-being spreading throughout Queensland. We recently showcased our LIFT (Lifting Individuals, Flourishing Together) approach to visitors from Bremer SHS who had heard about our focus and exciting successes in developing well-being at Shailer Park SHS. They had the opportunity to hear from students sharing their experiences on how the 5 faces strategy helped them to learn more about themselves, self-regulate and ‘be well.’ It was delightful to reveal how our well-being program is supporting our students to be ready and able to cross the line of opportunity into school and learning each day.

The success of our House Care Groups has also been evident this term, with many students identifying this as an excellent aspect of our school. Specifically, we asked students “What is great about our school?” and were repeatedly told that our house system and care groups have been significant in the development of positive connections across year levels as well as a sense of belonging amongst students. Developing a positive school culture is something every school wants to achieve: the sense of pride, care and belonging students feel leads to better learning outcomes and a more pleasant educational experience in general. I’d like to congratulate all our students and staff in their acceptance of the House Care Group system as well as their maturity in being able to understand just how positive it is for everyone at Shailer Park SHS.

On this subject of care, I am often asked by parents about our approach to bullying, an aspect of schooling we are all very aware of and committed to addressing. As adults, we know and understand that conflict is a part of life. We also understand that it is how we respond to that conflict that is most important in resolving it quickly and in a constructive manner. At Shailer Park SHS, our approach is multi-pronged. We explicitly teach students how to respond to conflict as part of our LIFT (Lifting Individuals, Flourishing Together) well-being program, including a Power With versus a Power Over approach in regards to relationships with their peers. As part of our daily routine, every House Care Group Teacher ‘checks and connects’ with your young person each morning, providing opportunities for students to identify their readiness to engage in learning on a scale from 1-5 (using the 5 faces). Whilst we encourage students to support each other too, it is pertinent that we also help them understand when talking with or seeking help from an adult is important.

In addition, we are launching an exciting Empowered Engagement Program - AMAYDA, which is sponsored by boxer Jeff Horn. We have formed an alliance with AMAYDA to build confidence in our Year 7 students, preparing them for the changes and challenges secondary school can bring for our young people. AMAYDA does this by engaging students through role playing a range of potentially difficult situations and providing practical solutions, whilst learning the best real-world self-defence skills taken from a wide range of martial arts and boxing. Students will learn to combine the physical training with core values taught in martial arts to:

  • have RESPECT for yourself and others.
  • have the COURAGE to do the right thing, even when you’re scared and make the right decisions when subjected to peer pressure.
  • have the INTEGRITY to do what you say you’re going to do.
  • build RESILIENCE, by strengthening their self-image, enabling students to recover quickly when faced with adversity.

Further information about this program can be accessed via the link below:

https://amayda.com.au/cherry-services/year-7-empowerment-program-secondary-school/

I hope you have had the opportunity to engage with my weekly emails providing details about how the school is responding to the Independent Public Schools (IPS) council recommendations. The final actions include Recommendations 5&6, which offer some adjustments to the 2020 timetable to provide a personalised learning approach for students during Period 4 on each Monday. We encourage you to take the time to access the online survey which was made available on September 2 until September 13 via email to all parents and carers. Responding to these recommendations requires a whole school community approach: please feel free to have your say on these changes during these times.

Finally, as we approach assessment due dates, I encourage parents to talk with their child about whether they are feeding their Wild and Emotional Brain appropriately. Routines for sleep and nutrition balanced with enjoyable activities are as important as ever to maintain during these peak times, though within reason. Expecting to do their best on an in class assessment with only four hours sleep and little to no breakfast is a recipe for disaster, as is trying to keep up with a very heavy extra-curricular sport, music, part-time job or social timetable during these periods. Resourceful Learners will have established effective study habits which support them to be Resilient during these assessment periods – encourage your young person to talk with you about their Wild and Emotional Brain needs so that they can continue to cross the line of opportunity, access their Smart Brain and perform their best on assessment tasks.

A message from our Senior Schooling Deputy Principal

Congratulations go to:
John Ahrens, Holly Gardiner, Daniel Light, Bob Lloyd Jones

They have all been nominated to attend the ENABLE Recognition breakfast for the outstanding work that they are doing in their area of the school. They all go above and beyond to support our young people and it gives us great pleasure to have them representing our school in this way.

John Ahrens- Technology HOD

John is always sourcing new post school outcomes for students by clear creating pathways during school which lead to specific jobs opportunities. He is very passionate about this work and has designed innovative subject packages to ensure that students are set up with the skills required for the next phase after school. He is also the RTO manager looking after several cert 2 and 3s

John works tirelessly with his team to be innovative and provide work specific skills for all students within his faculty.

He works closely with our Industry Liaison Officer to maintain and develop further industry links with companies who support our students leading to successful apprenticeships, traineeships and job outcomes.

Holly Gardiner- Visual Art, Design and Food Studies Teacher

Holly works really hard across two faculty areas and teaches art, design and hospitality. On top of this, she has created a flourishing vege garden with her class which is taking their learning to the next level. Holly has also created engaging opportunities for our Japanese study tours as well.

She is always highly enthusiastic about everything that she does and approaches all people with a welcoming smile. Holly certainly has the best interests of our students at heart.

Daniel Light- Technology teacher

Daniel has developed staff capability through endorsement training and has lead internal endorsement processes for our first round of senior assessment prior to submission. He is a well-liked member of staff who is leading the development of our Engineering course.

Daniel delivered PDs on the development of senior assessment following QCAA assessment construction guidelines across all faculties and provided a lot of support to the Dean of Studies and Senior Deputy in leading up to final submission of IA1 and 2.

He was also a last minute addition to our Japanese trip last year and provided a calm, supportive and measured approach to the trip which included a typhoon warning amongst other dramas!

Bob Lloyd-Jones- Facilities Officer

Bob is a popular member of our school community who works tirelessly on the never ending list of facilities jobs. He is always happy to help with a smile on his face and never complains!

Bob is also an honorary member of the Science & Health Faculty. He always works hard to build creations for enhanced engagement for our students. The latest creation was an outstanding outer space radiation table for science week. He is deeply invested in supporting every department in the school and genuinely cares about the staff and students.

Enrolments – Year 7 2020

We are excited to know we will be welcoming many new students and families in 2020. Thank you to those who have enrolled their children in Year 7 in 2020 and also to those who have attended our transition and enrolment events so far this year, including our Principal Tours, Primary School Visits, Student High School Engagement Experiences and Parent Cafes. If you know someone who is yet to enrol their child, please remind them to contact the school and collect an application package as soon as possible.

We are currently in the process of notifying families of the outcomes of their applications for enrolment in 2020, including all Academy Program applications. The process this year has been quite rigorous, given the complexities of our Enrolment Management Plan. Given the circumstances we have appreciated your cooperation and support in completing your applications according to the requirements.

Enrolment Interviews will begin this term; you will be notified when it is time to register for an appointment. Given the large number of interviews, these notifications will be sent out in phases. Please ensure that we have your current email address on file so that you can receive all communication including key documents to be completed by your child prior to the interview and brought with them on the day. The remaining key dates for your planning are:

These events are crucial to the effective transition of your child into our school. Where possible, students should be in attendance. We have worked closely with our primary schools to avoid clashes. Certainly, we would not expect students to be on holidays during term time and therefore all enrolled students should be able to attend on these days.

Academic Review – Years 7 to 9

This term a number of our students have been engaged in Academic Review meetings with their mentor teacher, if they were unsuccessful in a subject in Semester 1. Meetings have also been scheduled with students and their parents/guardians if they have been at significant risk of being unsuccessful across their studies. Please continue to discuss with your children their academic experience and progress at school. They should be able to tell you the WALT, WILF and TIB of their lessons, something new they have learned or even an obstacle to learning they have overcome during their day. Some helpful questions you can ask are:

What were you expected to know and do today?
How did you know if you were successful in your learning?
Why was this learning important?
What is something new you learned or did today?
What is something you did today that you weren’t able to do previously?
How have you crossed the line of opportunity today?

Students who engage in conversations about their learning usually experience greater success in and ownership of their overall learning experience.

A message from our Engagement Deputy Principal

Have you fed your wild brain and emotional brain today in order to access your smart brain?

That is a question that the Student Services team are continually working with Shailer Park SHS students to consider. Our wild brain needs are met when we sleep well, eat to fuel our bodies and brains, and get plenty of exercise and fresh air. At Shailer Park, we provide opportunities to feed our wild brains: CAST and House Activities to get active and stay connected at breaks; programs such as ABCN, AMAYDA and PCYC that many of our students are involved in, a tuckshop that supports healthy choices, water bubblers and expansive grounds in which to recharge at breaks. Our emotional brain is fed when we are connected and feel a sense of belonging, and develop strong relationships – our House system, our multi-age House Care Groups and our LIFT (Lifting Individuals, Flourishing Together) classes all provide a chance for our students to step over the Line of Opportunity and feed their emotional brain. There are many different supports in the Student Services Team (our Chaplain, Heads of Houses, Youth Support Coordinator, School Based Health Nurse and Guidance Officer) who are keen to connect with students and support their emotional brain development. Getting involved in next week’s R U OK DAY is a good first step – wear a splash of yellow on Tuesday 10 September. Our smart brain must be engaged at this time of year – as we finish our term strong – with assessment and reporting due, it is never more important to make sure emotional and wild brain needs are met.

Please be in touch with your child’s Head of House or suggest that they drop into the Student Services Hub in F block, if they need our support to cross the Line of Opportunity today. That is what we are here for!

Relax and recharge over the break, and we look forward to welcoming back our students for a great finish to the year.

A message from the Heads of House

Term three has seen many of our students participate in a number of programs focussed on a variety of outcomes for our students. We have had a Beacon High Impact program for Years 7 – 9 that focussed on real world and life experiences relating to the world of work. Our PCYC Lead Program has seen our Year 7 and 8 girls develop strategies to improve their interactions with others as well as increase engagement levels.

Shailer Park has had a long-standing partnership with ABCN who connect students with mentors from the corporate world. The Innovate Stem Program has provided a wonderful opportunity for our Year 7 students to gain an insight into what careers within science, technology and math might look like.

Our Year 11 students gained a valuable insight into developing and practising their interview skills and techniques in the Interview to Impress Program. The Focus Program enabled a small group of year 11 girls to develop their leadership development skills with mentors from Visionstream.

Our next exciting partnership is with Champion Boxer Jeff Horn. His organisation, AMAYDA, will partner with us to support some of our students to focus on how they want to be, and living a life of choice. All of the AMAYDA mentors are highly qualified martial artists or boxers, and they will work with our students on mental fortitude and discipline.

Our Capture the Flag inter-house lunchtime competition has certainly taken off. This has been an initiative of our student leaders who have encouraged large numbers of students in participating. We are in the final round of the competition and will soon determine which two houses will play off against each other for the title of champion. Watch out for the winner in our next newsletter.

As Heads of House, we are extremely pleased with the engagement of students in events and activities and the support they are giving one another in many different ways. We encourage our students to make the most of what is offered to them to cross the line of opportunity to create a life of choice.

Excellence Academies

Throughout Term 3, Academy students have engaged in a wealth of enriching activities and events that further extended and strengthened their love of learning in a specific field. Through these events, Academy students develop as Resilient, Reflective, Resourceful and Relational learners who are an asset to the school and the wider community.

I was fortunate enough to attend a number of events across the Academies calendar this term. These events include Creative Generation, the Beenleigh Quota Dance Eisteddfod and the Gold Coast Dance Eisteddfod with our Ignite Dance Academy, the Brisbane Futsal Challenge and the Gold Coast Futsal Challenge with our Sting Futsal Academy and the Queensland School’s Cup with our Sting Volleyball Academy. At every event I attended, I felt honoured to be part of a team whereby staff and students passionately work together in the pursuit of excellence. I sat in awe watching our students put their heart and soul into their performance for their team and their school.

I write this article today with a heart that is full of pride. I am inspired by our young people, and I am grateful for the staff, volunteers and families who work tirelessly with our students each and every day. Thank you!

Year 6 trails and auditions

Sting Volleyball Academy

Earlier in the year, all of our Volleyball Academy teams played across six different divisions at the Pacific District Volleyball Gala day. Results from this competition saw one team in each division take out the Gold Medal and progress to the Gold Coast Finals.

At the Gold Coast finals, held last Wednesday, our teams came out on top again! Of the six teams that participated in the event, all of our teams finished in the top three, with four of our teams winning the tournament and earning the Gold Medal!

Congratulations to our winning teams:

  • Year 9 Girls, Coached by Mr Tannahill
  • Year 9/10 Boys, Coached by Mr Renton
  • Year 10 Girls, Coached by Mr Martineau
  • Year 11/12 Boys, Coached by Ms King

A special mention to both of our junior teams, who participated at their very first Gold Coast Finals, who finished in third place!

Furthermore, a special mentioned to our year seven boys team who played up in the year eight division and finished in a commendable third place! Congratulations!

With such fantastic results, I can say with pride that our Volleyball Academy is a force to be reckoned with across the Pacific District and the Gold Coast Regions!

Looking forward, our junior teams are training hard in preparation for the Queensland Volleyball Junior Schools Cup, and our intermediate and senior teams are gearing up for the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup!

I wish all of our teams the very best as they prepare for some exciting competitions in Term 4.

SCIENCE

National Science Week

It has been a very busy few weeks in the Science & Health Department! From the 13th to 16th of August, students at Shailer Park SHS participated in a variety of science activities and challenges to celebrate National Science Week.

All Year 7 students were challenged in class to create a heat shield for a freddo to explore the concepts of radiation and rocketry.

Selected students were also invited to participate in a hydrogen balloon combustion as they further explored the use of hydrogen as a fuel source.

Students of all ages participated in the Inter-House Rocket Challenge. The students were sending high velocity water propelled rockets flying across the oval with the houses competing for the furthest and highest. Bilin Bilin was victorious!

On the Thursday we had a 1969 themed launch party hosted by our science ambassadors where students watched the space landing on an old fashioned tv (which they thought was a microwave at first), have 60’s themed food and punch and made space sherbet to share. Students also had the opportunity to watch Dr Karl (Ig Nobel Prize Winner and TV/Radio personality) in a live streamed question answer session in which students across Australia had submitted questions for Dr Karl to answer. Friday was the close of our celebrations with 50-foot solar balloons on the handball courts.

The library has also created a giant display with information about each of the planets in our solar system as well as a timeline of significant historical events in the space exploration world. This display will continue to be added to as our Year 7 students commence their study of Earth Sciences next term. Over 400 students were engaged in these activities across the week and are still asking questions about space now which is extremely exciting for educators.

Jacobs Well Environmental Centre

Our year 10 Biology students also had the opportunity to complete a day of Field Studies at Jacobs Well Environmental Centre.

Students were able to explore the ecosystems of the rocky shore and sand dunes and got their hands dirty with transect studies. This learning will inform their assessment task this term and also prepares them for their Biology Field Studies Camp next year. A great day in the sun to feed both their Smart and Wild Brains.

Health and Physical Education

It has been a busy term for our Physical Education students! Students in Years 7 and 8 have been exploring the role of fair play and equity in sports. Their challenge has been to create new rules and implement barriers and enablers to fair play. In our Futsal Excellence classes one team was given permission to work around the rules without the other team knowing and the impact on the game was analysed. Many cries of “that’s not fair” were heard which stimulated some great smart brain discussion about the important role that equity has in sport for participation and engagement.

Our Year 10 Physical Education students have been engaging in their first multimodal assessment task with a focus on improving personal fitness in a touch football context. This has required students to complete the beep test. In a few weeks we will be celebrating National HPE Day where students will be able to feed their Wild Brain and join in with some fitness test challenges including the ultimate plank and burpee challenge!

Technology

Food Studies and Hospitality

Hospitality students have been busy this term preparing and delivering delicious and nutritious lunch menus that students have been able to purchase through our Sapphires Restaurant here at Shailer Park SHS. Participation in these events has given students real world experience in customer service and maintaining hygienic safe food handling practices.

Design Technology and Digital Design

Shailer Park SHS and Logan City Council have teamed up to provide a unique project in which Year 10 Design and Digital Design students will be working collaboratively to create exciting new products, systems and environments to encourage the local community to visit the many wonderful parks in our region. Here Students are doing SWOT analysis to gain a better understanding of their local parks and how to get the community to access them.

Tech Ready

This year at Shailer Park SHS we have our first group of Year 11 Aviation students working their way towards a Certificate 3 in Aviation which will also give them a license from CASA to fly drones. Students are currently working with Mr Tannahill to build their own drones that they will develop their piloting skills with early next term.

Trade Ready

Trade ready students are currently involved in interviews with industry in the aim to secure work placements, apprenticeships and traineeships.

Through our partnerships with GCI and Langs, our trade ready students have the opportunity to secure traineeships that may lead them to secure full time employment post year 12. These students are working on CAD drawings for their Cert 3 in CAD.

THE READING CLUB

The Reading Club is another opportunity to expand the students’ reading horizon, by sharing titles and reviews with peers. We meet in a non-competitive environment, once per fortnight on Mondays, Lunch 2 in the library. As the saying goes, the more, the merrier!

READ, REVIEW, RECOMMEND

The Reading Tree in one corner of the library is slowly being populated with brief peer reviews of books. The concept behind this is to provide recommendations to others of books they have read. Students are encouraged to add their comments and after five reviews, they are eligible to be in a draw for a $20 JB-HI voucher. Obviously, you have to in it to win it!

Queensland Ready Reading

Reading is an enduring power that shapes and develops minds in and outside the classroom. At Shailer Park, our focus is “Learning through Reading” and our staff are committed to ensuring that your child is engaged in wide reading routinely across all subjects.

Queensland Ready Reading is a statewide volunteer program to support reading improvement for Queensland students. If you believe in the power of reading, and have time to assist us in empowering our students at Shailer Park, you might like to register your interest in becoming a Ready Reading Volunteer.

The Ready Reading program invites parents and community members to make a difference in their local community by volunteering in schools to support children’s reading.

Reading is a powerful tool to help children grow their vocabulary, language skills and imagination. It helps them to develop life-long skills that will support their future growth and learning.

The Department of Education’s Reading Centre and Volunteering Queensland are working together to help improve literacy for children in Queensland by training up to 3000 volunteers to share their knowledge and time to foster a love of reading.

Please access our website for the latest version of our Clubs, Academies, Societies and Tutorials timetable. With various sports, games, languages, tutorials and more on offer, there is sure to be a CAST activity for all students to get involved.

CAST

CAST programs provide students the opportunity to develop their strengths and passions whilst learning about themselves and others.

Our staff offer a variety of engaging activities for students to engage in before school, during lunch and after school each day. Some of our exciting CAST activities include Vocal Group, gym sessions, e-sports challenge, homework club, Arts and Crafts Club and Business Group, to name a few. With such diverse activities timetabled each week, it is easy for all students to get involved in extra-curricular activities at school.

The CAST timetable can be found on our school website by following the link below. Students can also see the CAST timetable on the television screens around the school and displayed in classrooms.

This year, in an effort to gauge sporting interest among our Junior Secondary students, we have engaged with Netball Queensland, Get into Rugby and AFL Queensland to come into the school to run skill development sessions with our students. Positive feedback from the sessions indicated that students found the sessions to be enjoyable, engaging and beneficial for all involved. We are excited to explore new opportunities for our students to engage in next term.

Ideas for new CAST activities are always welcome. If you have an idea for a new CAST activity that you would like to propose, please see Miss Westerveld in the MPS staffroom to discuss. Alternatively, you can email your proposal to swest182@eq.edu.au.

BPOINT PAYMENT OPTIONS
AVAILABLE NOW

Payment of student invoices can now be made using BPOINT as the Department of Education’s preferred payment method. BPOINT is a secure online payment system. EFT payments will now be phased out as a payment option.

BPOINT payment methods are listed on the emailed invoices. Please email office@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au to provide your email address if you have not previously provided it to the School. For assistance with these new options, please ring the Office on 3451 2777.

BPOINT - SINGLE PAYMENTS USING A COMPUTER OR PHONE APP:

  • Emailed invoice - click on link on bottom left hand side to auto populate fields on BPOINT screen.
  • Visa or MasterCard (debit or credit card) accepted.

BPOINT – SINGLE PAYMENTS USING PHONE OPTION:

  • Call the Queensland State School Bill Payment Service 24/7 on 1300 631 073.
  • Enter CRN, invoice number and amount paying, using the details on the invoice.
  • VISA and MasterCard (debit or credit card) accepted.

BPOINT - REGULAR DEDUCTIONS:

Contact the Office on 3451 2777 to set up regular weekly or fortnightly deductions.

    • BPOINT - transfer from bank account or pay by Visa or MasterCard (debit or credit card).
    • Centrepay will remain available – deducted from benefit.

Please note – payments can be made in full or by instalment. Please do not pay more than the invoiced amount. If you are making instalments and wish to check your remaining balance, please email office@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au or phone the Office 3451 2777.

The School will shortly be introducing Qkr by Mastercard. This easy-to-use mobile app for iPhones and Android smartphones makes school payments a breeze. Qkr will provide a flexible option to pay for non-invoiced items such as canteen lunch orders and activities including breakfast and lunch specials through our restaurant, Sapphires. Payments for P&C fundraising activities and events such as pie drives, raffles, and sausage sizzles will also be processed through the Qkr app. The School anticipates the app will be available for use in term 4.

    REDUCTION OF CASH RECEIPTING DAYS

In line with the move to a cashless system, the receipting days will be reduced to two days a week and phased out completely in 2020. Cash and EFTPOS payments can be made Tuesday and Friday from 8am – 3.30pm.

    STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME (SRS)
    FEES NOW DUE

All SRS fees including term 3 instalments are now due in full. If you have not retained your invoice, please click on the link at the bottom of the emailed Debtor Statement to pay fees by BPOINT. Please note the link on the statement does not auto populate the fields, and the invoice number, student name and amount will need to be manually inserted. The auto populate feature is only available on issued invoices. It is therefore important to save the invoice if you are intending on paying invoices by instalment rather than in full. Please contact the Office on 3451 2777 if you require a copy of an invoice or statement.

Thank you for processing these payments promptly to ensure the timely provision of student resources.
