A message from the Principal
Welcome back to all of our wonderful Shailer Park students and their families to what is promising to be another exciting year at this fantastic school! I hope all our families had the chance to spend time together and have had a relaxing break recharging the batteries. I certainly enjoyed spending time with my family, enjoying what was a hot summer hanging out in the pool and the outdoors. I’m feeling refreshed and excited about 2019: there is so much to look forward to!
Firstly, I would like to reflect on and celebrate the excellent achievements of our 2018 Year 12 cohort who have really epitomised our shared purpose of big plans and bold ambitions for a bright future, achieving 100% OP 1-15 including two OP1s. Congratulations to Roger Kingston and Rowan Duke who demonstrated our 4Rs of Resilient, Reflective, Relational and Resourceful learning to achieve the highest possible OP score: what an outstanding effort! Our vocational pathway students also achieved great success, securing traineeships, cadetships, apprenticeships and full or part time work with many of our industry partners. Congratulations to the 2018 graduates: you inspire us to be better, bolder and to dream bigger!
At the other end of the high schooling journey, I enjoyed welcoming close to 300 new Year 7 students to the Shailer Park SHS community last week. I’d like to also extend that welcome to their families and look forward to fostering a partnership approach to learning with parents and their children. The first day of school was a great opportunity to share with students what it means to be a part of the Shailer Park SHS community: our strong sense of spirit, our pride in contributing to our school community and our values of Resilient, Reflective, Relational and Resourceful learning. This seemed to be evident everywhere in the first couple of weeks! I was so impressed and proud of our Year 12 students who supported the new Year 7s on their first day, providing mentorship, support and care. The leadership and role modelling our Year 12 students displayed has proven their worthiness as the school’s leaders and I’m excited to see their continued contribution to our positive school culture throughout the remainder of the year.
Camaraderie, belonging and pride are certainly becoming more and more evident throughout Shailer Park SHS, with the excitement of the new House Care Groups (HCG) unmistakeable when our whole school community gathered on assembly within their new Barnes, Francis, Bilin Bilin and Karle houses last week. The collective support and peer relationships the HCG will offer is an exciting step in building caring and supportive networks for students throughout the entire school. Our new houses are deeply rooted in our school’s history and we look forward to sharing this with students and families over the coming weeks. Below are the house logos representing our four Houses, their colours, names and mascots: I cannot wait to see our students getting into the spirit of the HCG system!
This house spirit will be effective in building positive relationships within Shailer Park SHS, and as I explained to our students on assembly, being the best version of themselves starts with the individual. Each day, as they enter our school gates, each student crosses over a line of opportunity. The opportunity to be the best version of themselves, to invest in their big plans and bold ambitions, to seek the right course of action and give their best effort. We shared with our school community the 4 zones of learning: when students are in the Trying or Survival Zone, they are unable to cross over that line, whereas the Learning and Mastery Zones offer the opportunity to grow, learn and feel a sense of accomplishment. I told our students that the line of opportunity exists every single day and that whilst our teachers will continuously extend a hand to give their students support, to nurture and help them grow; students themselves also need to commit to embracing the opportunities offered. Most importantly, students must own their learning. Our wish is to see all students crossing the line of opportunity into the learning zone each and every lesson.
In an effort to support students to cross that line of opportunity, I am excited to be able to provide a comprehensive student services hub where the support of our Heads of House, Guidance Officer, School Nurse, Chaplain, Youth Support Coordinator and our Students Services Officer is accessible to all. The co-location of these services will allow us to strengthen the support we provide students and ensure that they feel at their best in order to learn effectively.
Lastly, I’m looking forward to welcoming our new families on a more personal level at our upcoming Parent Nights (more information located below), which are a wonderful opportunity for parents to connect with myself, our staff, values, policies and procedures. Shailer Park SHS truly is a wonderful and supportive community! I encourage all our new families to become part of this through attending the Parent Nights, connecting with us on Facebook and subscribing to our newsletters. With such positive, supportive shifts taking place in our school in line with our own big plans and bold ambitions, I know that Shailer Park SHS certainly has its own bright future in 2019!

A message from our Senior Schooling Deputy Principal
Welcome back to all of our hard working Senior Students for 2019. It has been so wonderful to see our seniors really stepping up and into their leadership roles within the daily House Care Groups. I have already seen a big difference in the overall way our seniors are carrying themselves around the school.
Year 10
2019 marks the first year of the Shailer Park State High School 3 year senior phase of learning for our current Year 10 students, with the Year 10 curriculum providing the foundation for their Year 11 and 12 studies. It was very evident to me how seriously our students are taking this during the JET planning/subject selection interviews that we had with Year 9 students and carers in Term 3 last year.
Year 11
Our Year 11s will be the very first students to experience the New QCE system and at Shailer we are more than prepared to ensure that our students are best equipped to experience a successful and rewarding final two years of senior schooling. For more information regarding the New QCE please follow the link below.
The New Senior Curriculum is underpinned by the 21st Century Skills required for all adults to be successful in the future workforce.
Young Queenslanders in the 21st century need to be:
- innovators
- entrepreneurs
- lifelong learners
- responsible global citizens.
QCAA General Syllabuses are underpinned by the skills students need in the 21st century:
- critical thinking
- creative thinking
- communication
- collaboration and teamwork
- personal and social skills
- ICT skills.

Year 12
2019 is the final year for the OP system in Queensland which means our current Year 12s who are university bound are in the position of being the last ever Year 12s to sit the QCS test and work towards a final OP score. What an exciting time for them!
In Week 5, this term, our Year 12s will receive their Senior Leader badges at our Monday assembly. During this ceremony, they will together pledge and commit to set the standard for all of our Shailer students. This is significant with our multi-age care groups providing many opportunities for them to support the House Care Teachers lead their team.
All seniors
Our senior school data team continue to meet weekly to ensure that every senior student is on track and has the support required to fulfil their Big Plans and Bold Ambitions. The Dean of Studies and myself will be meeting with students and parents to ensure that they are on the right pathway and getting the support they need for a Bright Future.

A message from our Engagement Deputy Principal
As a new member of the Shailer Park SHS community, I have been overwhelmed by a warm and friendly welcome from students and staff alike. After more than twenty years as an educator, sixteen of which I have spent in Logan schools, it is a great privilege to be leading the Shailer Park SHS Student Services team, who are working together to support and engage our students to achieve their Big Plans and Bold Ambitions.
The Student Services Team are excited and energised to be leading innovation that enables student wellbeing to be at the centre of all learning.
The Student Services Team consists of
- The four Heads of House, who introduce themselves below;
- Lynne Grimes, Student Services Officer, who supports our students as the face of F Block’s Student Hub;
- Kate Sherwood, Guidance Officer (replacing Nat Tickle who is on a period of leave);
- Sarah Mitchell, our School Nurse;
- Brendan Hackles, our School Chaplain; and
- Carly Argeros, our newly appointed Youth Support Coordinator.
This team is based in F Block, our Student Services Hub, which is now a ‘one stop shop’ for all Shailer Park SHS students. Late? Uniform issues? Need an appointment? Lost property? Want to connect with your Head of House? Students just need to remember to report to F Block for any of these. There will always be an adult in F Block who can assist our students.
The Shailer Park SHS community has embraced some very exciting changes this year:
Our House System – every student has been allocated a house…
Go Bilin Bilin; Karle; Barnes or Francis!
These Houses are each led by a Head of House and Student House Leaders, whose focus it is to build a strong sense of belonging, connection and identity within our school. We have developed war cries, had team building afternoons and participated in house challenges.
Our Multi-Age House Care Groups – every morning, students Check and Connect with their House Care Group, consisting of a teacher and students from Year 7 through to 12. This allows our younger students to aspire to their in-class senior role models, and our older students to rise to the expectations and responsibilities as leaders and mentors in these groups. Staff are able to connect with students outside of their faculty, using Signature Practices such as ‘The 5 Faces’, and this time helps us to build a stronger sense of community and pride in our school.
Our LIFT (Lifting Individuals, Flourishing Together) Classes – all students are engaged in a seventy-minute lesson each week focusing on wellbeing, and facilitating learning about themselves, others and the world around them. This lesson also supports the reinforcement of our 4Rs: building resilient, reflective, relational and resourceful learners.
Please take a moment to speak to your students today about the 5 Faces, their House Care Group and their House. Our community will become stronger if we are all engaged in this change.
I am committed to and excited about the development of student wellbeing that supports student achievement, and would love to hear from parents and students throughout the year. Our Shailer Park SHS Family Check and Connect on Monday March 4th is a great opportunity to meet the staff working hard to ensure that your students are empowered and engaged to realise their potential at our school.

ASSESSMENT
Students will have received their assessment planners for the semester. These have been emailed to students. Parents received information about how we support students at school and how you can support them at home during the week as well.
We recommend putting these assessment planners in student study areas or up on the fridge at home to ensure you are tracking the progress of your child/children. School diaries are an invaluable tool for assisting in the collation and organising of their work to meet deadlines. Ensuring dates are in diaries will help students work towards these goals.
We are working with students to ensure they are achieving their best in all subjects at all times, and tracking their performance and potential by being RESOURCEFUL and demonstrating RESILIENCE of behaviours to ensure all outcomes are considered. I’m looking forward to some excellent work and progress as students achieve their goals.
ABSENCES for ASSESSMENT
Assessment is designed so that students understand their progress towards course goals and modify their behaviour in order to meet those goals. Ongoing assessment allows students to gain a true representation of their understanding.
Our practices align with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) guidelines available from the website below and families are reminded that students must meet deadlines and attend exams on the due dates or provide a medical certificate if they are unable to submit/attend on the due date.
https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment
If families know they are going to be absent during key assessment times in the assessment planner, then they must apply for extension or an alternative date to sit the assessment instrument. Our Assessment Policy is available on our website, and applications can be found in the appendices.
https://shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au/Supportandresources/Formsanddocuments/Documents/assessment-policy.pdf
ACCESS ARRANGEMENT AND REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS
If you believe your child has a disability, impairment or medical condition which is a barrier to their performance in their assessment, they may be eligible for an access arrangement or reasonable adjustment as outlined by QCAA.
https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment/aara
Once you have familiarised yourself with the documentation from QCAA regarding these adjustments and have identified the arrangement or adjustment request, please make contact with the school so that we may support your student further. If this is a known condition, we may approach you regarding support we can offer.
STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS IN SCHOOL
- Start your revision as soon as possible. Read around your subject.
- Revise regularly and test yourself regularly.
- Use a revision timetable or allocate time each day for studying each lesson you take during that day.
- Revise subjects you are less keen on at least as much as those you like.
- Revise in an atmosphere conducive to study.
- Compile revision summaries and use them to help you answer exam questions or assignment tasks.
- Practice answering questions with and then without your notes, then to time.
- Take an active approach to learning. Use whatever memory tricks work for you.
- Lots of short sessions are much better than few marathon ones! Research shows that about 40-45 minutes is optimal, after which you should take a break before starting the next session.
- Get enough sleep (8-10 hours each night)
- Ensure you have balance in your life – that means as much time studying as socialising or working.
All Students, All Subjects, All Units
Setting goals gives your life direction, and boosts your motivation and self-confidence. Learn how to set SMART goals and achieve your dreams. All students should be aiming to pass (or improve their results) in all subjects for each unit they study.
The school offers CAST (Clubs, Academies, Societies and Tutorials) to support students in their learning. Students are encouraged to attend tutorials if they need extra support finishing assessment or answering challenging questions.
QCS Preparation
On the back of some amazing senior student results for 2018, we continue to work hard to support Year 12 students in their corning in QCS preparation.
QCS Sessions are specialised classes to prepare students for the rigours of the external exam. They help students to understand the format and style of questions, as well as provide useful strategies on how to answer the tests; Multiple Choice, Short Response and Written Task to a stimulus.
QCS Dates: Tuesday 3rd September, Wednesday 4th September
NAPLAN Preparation
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy later in the year, and we do important work in ensuring students have the confidence and skills to participate in these activities.
NAPLAN Dates: Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th May

New staff 2019
Kerri Sheppard- Engagement Deputy
Kerri comes to us with a wealth of experience. She was most recently a Deputy Principal at Springwood State High School where she had worked for over 15 years. During this time, she worked in varied roles including Master Teacher where she developed her coaching skills and was able to lead the school while improving her own learning. Kerri’s recent experience in the Deputy Principal role focussed on strengthening student engagement and building effective relationships with students. Her strong commitment to seeing kids thrive makes her a valuable asset to our school. FUN fact - she taught Daniel Light, current teacher at our school, as a student at Springwood SHS!
Melissa Dodd- Head of House for Karle Kookaburras
Melissa has recently been at Springwood State High School and previously at Helensvale State High School. In her role at Springwood as Coach, she developed innovative responses to engage students, focussed on supporting and coaching teachers. Melissa comes to us with a wealth of experience in leading and supporting staff in the development of their classroom culture. Her energy and enthusiasm for house culture will no doubt be a significant contribution to our school culture and the Karle house!
Bridget Williams- Reading Coach
Bridget is an experienced senior English teacher who has over 20 years teaching experience in both South Africa and Australia. She has been heavily involved in reading improvement over the last few years at Upper Coomera State College. Bridget was a Dean of students for several years and has coached teachers and Head of Departments in the area of pedagogy, behaviour management and literacy. She was most recently a STLaN, Support Teacher Literacy and Numeracy, with excellent student improvements.
Kate Sherwood- Guidance Officer
I wanted to introduce myself formally to the Shailer Park community. My name is Kate Sherwood and I am the Guidance Officer replacing Nathaniel Tickle in Term 1 this year. My background is in mathematics and science, specialising in the areas of Senior Biology and Chemistry, before I transitioned into the special education department teaching students with a range of learning, behavioural and intellectual disabilities.
In late 2018 I worked as a Guidance Officer in Far North QLD offering professional expertise, leadership and support in a collaborative manner to a number of school communities and networks in around the Atherton Tablelands. During my time up north, I was able to facilitate the development and implementation of plans, programs, and procedures to assist students in achieving positive educational, developmental and lifelong learning outcomes.
I believe that student resilience and wellbeing are essential for both academic and social development, and this can be promoted in schools by providing safe, supportive and respectful learning environments. Schools share the responsibility of promoting resilience and wellbeing within their students with the whole community, and together we can help our young people create strong social bonds and supportive communities. In this way, we can encourage them to maintain healthy relationships and responsible lifestyles so that they can become happy, healthy and contributing members of society in whatever pathway they choose.
I look forward to immersing myself in the community this term and meeting as many of you as possible.
Appointments can be made through Student Services.
A message from the Heads of House
Welcome to 2019
This year we have embraced a number of innovations within our school’s structure and organisational practices in order to prioritise the wellbeing of our Shailer Park community. We believe that the relationships and connections across the many facets of school lay the foundations for student’s sense of belonging. This will then foster and improve relationships, levels of engagement and school spirit.
The most significant change is the introduction of our multi-age House Care Groups. Each care group consists of students from Year 7 through to Year 12. We believe it is important to build relationships and connections across year levels and this format enables opportunities for this to occur. In Week one, we embraced a ‘Week of Opportunity’ where students within their care groups engaged in a number of relationship building activities both in and outside the classroom, culminating in our ‘House Party.’
Each Care Group belongs to one of our four new houses – Barnes, Bilin Bilin, Francis and Karle. The new houses have been named after individuals who have played a significant role in the development of the school and community. A Head of House leads each of these. The focus of each Head of House is to support students in their engagement and wellbeing so that each individual student may flourish.
While the Head of House will lead and collaborate with both staff and students, the House Care Group Teacher has a significant role to play. This begins at the start of every day when they ‘check and connect’ during the allocated time. This time is an opportunity for each teacher to build positive relationships with students and their families. The House Care Group Teacher will be students and families first point of contact should you have any queries or concerns. If necessary, they will then communicate with their relevant Head of House to follow up.
We look forward to an exciting year ahead working alongside your students. Located in the Student Services Hub (F Block), we are your one stop shop for all student needs.

2019- Welcome back
New School year, new term, new beginnings… New opportunities for your success.
Have you set your goals?
What do you want to achieve?
Now is a chance to get back on track and be prepared!
Establish a study plan:
To help reduce stress and ensure that you're as organised as you can be, learn more about planning and looking after yourself and about staying focused in order to be as ready as you can be.
Have a study plan and goals for each day / week. Make sure it's balanced with other important things in your life - that way it will be easier to stick to.
Create a study space that is comfortable, quiet, well lit, organised, and has no distractions nearby, such as TV, phone, people talking, etc.
Make sure you have everything you need for each study session as this helps to feel more confident and organised.
When studying, switch your phone and email off to stop the distractions.
Don't get hungry before or while studying. Grab nutritional snacks that keep you going, such as fruit/nuts/dairy, etc.
Rest when you need to:
Work out what times of day do you have the most energy and plan to study then.
Don't study more than 40-60 mins without a short break. Even a 5 minute break will help. A glass of water helps too!
When you have a break do something physical or fun, for example go for a short run or play with a pet.
Look after yourself:
Self-care is especially important when you have a big demand in your life – but what does it mean?
- Healthy foods- choose nutritious foods these will help fuel your mind and body.
- Healthy drinks- water remains the best choice- either post sports, or as a drink.
- Build activities you enjoy and that bring your stress levels down into your study plan, such as sport, spending time with friends, internet, etc. Remember to get some exercise every day as this helps you to keep focused and energetic.
- Relaxation is important, especially before bed, to slow the brain activity down. Try some slow, deep breathing, a shower or a bath, herbal tea etc. Avoid screen time prior to bed to allow yourself the best opportunity for a refreshing sleep.
These will all be covered more details in future editions of the newsletters and the weekly chats. However, if you need information now- please come and see me.
Most importantly- if schooling and grades are your priority- you need to stay focused- what are you prepared to let go of to help achieve what you want:
And finally...
If the stress is getting to you, come and seek help.
Stress will prevent you from studying effectively and confidently.
To learn more how stress affects you press here.
There are supports you can access in persons or online, if you would like some assistance with this please make a time to see me.

It was great to see so many attendees at the event and it will certainly be a key event in our school calendar in years to come.
I congratulate all students who were successful in gaining entry into our academy programs and look forward to watching your successes and exploits throughout 2019 and beyond. To the parents of our academy students, congratulations on your child’s entry into our academy program. We look forward to sharing the journey with you and your child this year.
CAST Program
Launching in Week 4 will be our dedicated CAST program. CAST, otherwise known as our signature Clubs, Academies, Societies and Tutorials program, are extra-curricular opportunities offered by staff to all members of the Shailer Park SHS student body. The vision of CAST is to provide students with the opportunity to be connected, be creative, develop a strength or passion, collaborate with others, meet new people and of course have fun. Staff at Shailer Park SHS have a strong affinity with student engagement, connectedness and well-being and this is evident with the number and variety of CAST activities offered to students before and after school as well as during lunchbreaks.
A wide range of CAST activities are available:
Sporting activities including: Futsal, Volleyball, Netball, Touch Football, Gym activities as well as strength and conditioning activities and Disco-fit
Clubs: IPAD Club, Arts/Crafts, Science Club, Reading Club, Japanese Club, Board/Card Games, Wii Sports
Societies: Yearbook Crew, Yoga, Business Working Lunch, $20 Entrepreneurship Challenge, Girls United, Italian and Senior Magic Activities
Tutorials offered by our Curriculum departments
Our CAST program is reviewed regularly to ascertain student interest and new activities will be introduced to meet the needs of our student body.
I encourage every student to get themselves involved in a CAST program this year and we look forward to sharing some of successes of the program through newsletters and the school Facebook page.
CAST timetables will be distributed on noticeboards around the school and made available on the school website to keep students and parents up-to-date with the program.
Looking forward to an exciting year!!

Library
Welcome to 2019
And what an exciting year it is going to be! Students will be well aware that the library ‘space’ has been soaring in leaps and bounds over the past couple of years and this year will witness some landmark initiatives, both in a physical as well as a functional sense. It will truly be the EPICENTRE of all things fun and fabulous. So keep your eye on this ‘space’.
Firstly, we welcome Mrs Bridget Williams as our Reading Coach. It is universally known that students who are readers are not only achievers, but also leaders. So it is simple really, let us spread the word – reading is fun and adds adventure and imagination to our lives.
As the school librarian, my staff and I are focused on ways to promote the joy of reading. Our monthly book borrowers’ draw will continue with a $20 voucher for the lucky winner. Thematic displays will also be a regularly featured in the library with this month centred on St. Valentine’s Day so it is all about love, friendships and relationships. Look forward to ‘lucky dip’ weeks where your child selects a package of 3 books (hidden in a paper bag) to take home and try; maybe it is a genre never tried before. As the saying goes, nothing ventured, nothing gained!
I would urge Parents and Carers to encourage their children to visit the library, see ‘the lie of the land’, check out all the fun activities happening, from serious work and reading, to fun activities such as chess and multiple other games. It is inarguably one the most buzzing hotspots on campus. See you there soon!
Happy Reading

A message from the Business Manager
Here at SPSHS we operate a Student Resource Scheme that enables parents to enter into an agreement with the school. For an annual participation fee, we provide the temporary use of prescribed textbooks and/or other resources, and/or the purchase of consumables and materials for students to use in class.
In accordance with the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, the cost of providing instruction, administration and facilities for the education of students enrolled at State schools is met by the state. Parents/Caregivers are directly responsible for providing textbooks and other personal resources for their children.
I would like to thank those families who have already paid for 2019 and those families who have managed to pay any outstanding debt from previous years. We have been able to purchase Mathematics and Science textbooks to the value of $40,000. Prompt payment of fees will allow us to continue to supply further resources for students.
There are numerous ways to make payments including
- Direct Deposit BSB 064 170 Acc# 00090123
- In person at our finance window with cash or card between 8.00am – 3.30pm, Monday to Friday
- Credit card payment can be accepted via BPOINT on 1300 631 073 by quoting your CRN and invoice number as this is listed as an option on the invoices.
Please note that unpaid fees from previous years need to be promptly paid.
Thank you again to all those families who are up to date with their payments.
Excursion Fees
NO late payments will be accepted for excursions after the due date (generally 1 week prior to excursion). All school fees and other payments must be up to date, paid in full, or payment plan in place, otherwise students risk losing excursion and/or academy privileges.

Building Fund
The main purpose of the P&C is to support the school for the benefit of all students. The P&C maintains a close relationship with the school executive and will work with them to improve the experience of all students, teachers and staff at Shailer Park State High School. We continue to raise funds via our tax-deductable Building Fund and by making grant applications. Funds are directed towards our major common goal, which is to air-condition all teaching spaces in the school.
If you are interested in making a Tax Deductable donation or have some other building type works contribution please contact pandc@shaiparkshs.eq.edu.au or attend a meeting, held on the 3rd Tuesday each month at 6pm. We would love to hear from you.

Community Support Program
Collaboration with local business to provide more resources for our students...thank you to all those who mentioned Shailer Park State High School when making purchases from Stellarossa. Our P&C will be receiving the kickback donations at the end of each month to assist our students.
We envision this raising more funds to be directed to benefit all students.
When paying for meals or drinks at Stellarossa, please mention that you are from Shailer Park High. Your invoice details will be recorded and Shailer Park High P&C will then receive a donation. The donated amounts will be totalled and sent monthly for P&C to use the funds to assist our school community.
Stellarossa is located near Bakers Delight at the Aldi/Coles end of the Hyperdome shopping centre and is open from
7-5pm Monday to Friday,
7- 4.30pm Saturday &
7.30-4pm Sunday.
Come on down and try their tasty breakfasts, salads, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, coffee and drinks.
