A message from the Principal
Welcome back to Term Four after a very well deserved break! I enjoyed some rest after Term Three and had a wonderful few weeks enjoying time with my family and especially my young son who enjoys body boarding at the beach. I sincerely hope all of our Shailer Park State High School families had a restful break as well: the next nine weeks are always incredibly busy for teachers and students with a number of beneficial changes for our school (which I will detail below) also imminent amongst all the teaching and learning.
During the holidays, I reflected on my role as a parent living through an incredible era of change, where spending quality time with my child amongst the daily routines of school, school, sporting activities, a social life and all the other ‘things’ we do like grocery shopping and household chores has become very important in the sense that there seems to be much less opportunity for that ‘quality time’. In my other role as a high school principal, I have been given first-hand experience on how those changes in our society are affecting our students. These experiences are supported by the many studies and reports, which show our children, are becoming more anxious and less resilient in a world where digital trends remain unchecked and changing home life structures challenge our traditional notion of the family. As a parent, educator and the Principal of Shailer Park SHS, where the health and happiness of our young people is my top priority, I cannot ignore these trends or hope that the systems put in place here twenty years ago will somehow cope with students who are increasingly susceptible to anxiety, depression, apathy and a host of other issues. Shailer Park SHS has always stood by its mantra of lifting aspirations, of developing students who have big plans and bold ambitions: we want our students to flourish in life! As such, 2019 will herald a number of changes aimed at putting well-being, i.e. health and happiness, at the centre of learning at Shailer Park SHS.
The first major transformation in 2019 will be through engaging students in multi-age care classes. These care classes will start each day, where student engagement and the philosophy of ‘check and connect’ will be implemented. Research on multi-age care classes supports that adolescents learn from their peers and that providing opportunities for them to connect develops their well-being. This daily routine will offer opportunities for students to build friendships and support networks across year levels as well as developing age-appropriate mentoring roles. Younger students are assisted in their development through aspiring to their in-class senior role models, whilst older students are compelled to rise to the expectations and responsibilities as leaders and mentors within their multi-age classrooms. From a whole school perspective, allowing our students to develop social and educational networks across year levels helps to build an even greater sense of belonging to Shailer Park SHS and its community.
The second strategy to be put in place next year will be the establishment of leadership positions that focus on building a sense of identity through our house system. These roles will focus on student well-being through building a strong sense of belonging, connection and identity within our four school houses. This stronger and more visible house system will recognise academic, sporting, cultural and community contributions made by students as house members, providing even more opportunities for students to engage with learning and success. Furthermore, the house leaders will be the primary contact for families in regards to student engagement, well-being, attendance, behaviour and support and accelerated learning. This in turn will strengthen communication between parents and the school with all siblings being supported by a consistent house leader. This is a very exciting change for Shailer Park with students given some ownership over this transformation by creating new house identities that reflect our school values: I am very keen to see what they come up with!
The third strategy will see the introduction of the LIFT lesson (lifting individuals, flourishing together), a 70 minute lesson each week focussing on student well-being, providing opportunities for students to learn about themselves, others and the world around them. The program will be based on the positive education model, which focuses on building resilient, reflective, relational and resourceful learners. At Shailer Park SHS, we have already been teaching and learning in the positive education model throughout the year with our focus on the 4Rs: this 70-minute lesson reinforces what has become an effective learning tool in our classrooms.
These changes may seem insignificant, but the fact is that even these small adjustments to our weekly timetables and staffing will have a beneficial impact on the well-being of our students. Any transformation which prevents depression, increases life satisfaction, encourages social responsibility, promotes creativity and fosters learning and even enhances academic achievement can only translate to a positive change. I look forward to the support of our wonderful Shailer Park parents, students and community in the implementation of these changes in 2019.
Lastly, I would like to thank all those parents who took part in our recent Parent Forums, which were held by our Independent Public School (IPS) council. The insights offered provide us with valuable information about our school and how we can continue to strengthen outcomes and lift the aspirations of our students. More detailed information about the parent forums will be made available through the IPS council later this term. .

Shailer Park State High is ready for the new QCE system!
For the past 3 years, staff have been planning, learning, curriculum writing and collaborating to be ready for the new senior system that starts with our Year 11 students in 2019. We have facilitated workshops, been part of cross-school teams, run information evenings and lessons with both students and parents and attended many professional development sessions run by QCAA to ensure that we are leading the way, in the Shailer Way!
Part of this process has involved us taking a critical eye as to what our students’ need, what industries our students are heading into as well as looking at trends in South East Queensland in regards to where the jobs are and which areas are experiencing growth. This has led to us offering new subjects and packages for our Year 10 and 11 students in 2019.
At the same time we are ensuring that our last ever group of OP students are being supported and educated in the best possible way to ensure that they finish strong at the end of 2019.
Final weeks for our Year 12s
Our current Year 12s have only a few weeks left of their schooling journey and we have some great programs, and experiences planned for them before they leave us and embark on their new journey into post schooling education or employment. It is always mixed feelings for the senior team as we get to this part of the year and watch our students say their final goodbyes. We reflect on the progress that they have made and the lessons that they have learnt both in and out of the classroom during their time at high school.
I look forward to celebrating with each and every one of them at the upcoming formal and graduation ceremonies.
Shailer Park Abroad
It was a great pleasure and privilege for me to accompany 29 students and 2 staff members to Japan during the last school holidays. I was delighted to witness the growth that the students went through during their daily adventures in a country with very different ways of working to our own. The students showed respect and curiosity on a daily basis. They also had many opportunists to work on the 4Rs; developing new relationships across different year levels, showing resilience in the face of a typhoon and the Tokyo subway system, being resourceful with tickets, passports, rainy weather and luggage and reflecting daily on how we could improve our Japanese and travel skills for the next day.
It was also a great chance for me to get to know some students in a different light to the one that I usually have as their deputy principal. Special mention to Daniel Light and Morgan Lewis as the accompanying teachers on the trip which was a massive deal considering that they were responsible for the students for 12 days, 24 hours a day, and during their own school holidays. I’d also like to mention Brittany Kocka, Nicole Tucker, Hannah Rawlins, Kathleen Huggins and Aisha Barry who showed a great deal of leadership in helping staff as well as supporting their fellow students navigate their way through a very different environment.

Young Tourism Leaders
Senior Students had a visit from a Young Tourism Leader to discuss pathway options for students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Many of our students go on to work in the industry of Tourism and Hospitality, and those who go on to study at TAFE or University often have jobs in these industries as well.
Abbey Blanchfield is currently the Marketing and Sales Manager at Airtrain Citylink, Brisbane. Her career started in tourism at age 17 in her families accommodation business. Her career has included Business Development Manager at Accommodation Noosa and General Manager at Gympie Cooloola Tourism. She has lectured in tourism and business, sharing her knowledge with up and coming tourism leaders.
Abbey shared with students the requirements of being flexible and agile at work, the importance of being a good communicator and of being relational in the workplace. This aligns directly with our school's 4Rs. She shared with us the multitude of possibilities in hospitality and tourism in our area, and the opportunities for students to get involved in the many things happening in South East Queensland; Big Sound in Brisbane, The Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Brisbane Festival etc.
It was an absolute pleasure to have her share her experience with our students!

Have you set your goals?
What do you want to achieve?
Now is a chance to get back on track and be prepared!
Establish a study plan:
To help reduce stress and ensure that you're as organised as you can be, learn more about planning and looking after yourself and about staying focused in order to be as ready as you can be.
Have a study plan and goals for each day / week. Make sure it is balanced with other important things in your life - that way it will be easier to stick to.
Talk to employers early to let them know you need to limit your shifts / hours while studying.
Create a study space that is comfortable, quiet, well lit, organised, and has no distractions nearby, such as TV, phone, people talking, etc.
Make sure you have everything you need for each study session as this helps to feel more confident and organised.
Look after yourself:
Self-care is especially important when you have a big demand in your life - that way you have the energy to commit to what you need to accomplish.
Build activities you enjoy and that bring your stress levels down into your study plan, such as sport, spending time with friends, internet, etc.
Do not get hungry before or while studying. Grab nutritional snacks that keep you going, such as fruit/nuts/dairy, etc.
Remember to get some exercise every day as this helps you to keep focused and energetic.
Rest when you need to:
Work out what times of day do you have the most energy and plan to study then.
Do not study more than 40-60 minutes without a short break. Even a 5-minute break will help. A glass of water helps too!
When you have a break do something physical or fun, such as go for a short run or play with a pet.
Relaxation is important, especially before bed, to slow the brain activity down. Try some slow, deep breathing, a shower or a bath, herbal tea etc.
Stay focused- what are you prepared to let go of to help achieve what you want
When studying, switch your phone and email off to stop the distractions.
Say "no" to parties during the weeks close to the exams. This will help to keep you refreshed and energised.
Try to keep your focus on school and exams rather than other stuff happening in your life; you do not need this extra worry around relationships, friendships etc. right now.
Try to keep a focus on your health and wellbeing by not using things like drugs or alcohol; they can make it much harder to study.
Ask for help:
Stay at school until your last day so you do not miss any important info about exams, or fun events with your colleagues.
Practice writing essays and show your teachers for feedback for improvement.
Ask teachers the best way to study for each subject; they have many years’ experience they can share with you.
Some teachers are happy to be contacted during the time leading up to the exams. Find out which ones you can contact and make use of this if you need to.
If you have trouble approaching your own teacher for advice, talk to one of the other ones who teach the same subject.
Group study sessions with classmates can be a helpful and entertaining way of studying, but keep your focus on what you want to achieve with these sessions.
Talk about what you are studying with family members and friends as this helps to retain the info more, especially names and dates, etc.
Be prepared- getting closer to exam time
Read/ write everything 3 times as this also helps to commit the information to memory.
Use your trial exam results to focus in on what you need study.
Use previous exam papers to get a feel for what to expect.
Ask friends what they are doing that is helping with their study or friends who did it last year.
You need to study within 24 hours of the exam on that subject to retain more info.
Write things in coloured texta that you have trouble remembering (such as names and dates) and blu-tak to your toilet wall/door. Sounds funny, but it really works!
Night before exams
Prepare your school bag, have stationary and pens/ pencils etc. all ready.
Get your uniform out all ready for the morning.
Get a good night sleep.
Day of the exam
Do your usual routine, for example, have what you normally eat for breakfast.
Take some water and a healthy snack (if allowed) to the exam.
And Finally...
If the stress is getting to you it will prevent you from studying effectively and confidently - so ask for help from headspace, a counsellor, professional, or help line.

Year 11 & 12 Head of Year
What a busy term this will be! This acts as a timely reminder that the final six weeks need to be considered with the utmost of importance, we want to finish the year in a strong manner! These are exciting times that will be filled with wonderful and memorable events, such as the highly anticipated Formal and of course, Graduation. Students have now received their invitation to the Formal, (see attached), and have been reminded that all expectations around school policy and procedure must be upheld in order to attend.
The same goes for Graduation. The final two weeks will see the Year 12s participate in an alternate program; once again, students must be in full attendance in order to fulfil all obligations. You will receive a letter shortly regarding all events and details of the final two weeks.
I would like to congratulate all Year 11 students who have nominated themselves for a leadership position for 2019. Students have gone through a round of interviews and addressed the entire school population on assembly. This is no easy task! All applicants have handled themselves with great dignity and should be commended on their efforts to this point. I am looking forward to celebrating their successes in the very near future.
A reminder also that Year 11 need to be focussing on a strong finish to set them up in the best possible manner for Year 12. Focus must also include full attendance and the completion of all assessment tasks.
A final reminder too that all payments and orders for their senior jacket must be made by Friday 9th November. No payments or orders will be accepted after this date.

International Studies
During the holidays, 29 students and 2 staff members went to Japan. The students travelled and explored several cities and used our school values of the 4Rs:
- developing new relationships across different year levels,
- showing resilience in the face of a typhoon and the Tokyo subway system,
- being resourceful with tickets, passports, rainy weather and luggage and
- reflecting daily on how we could improve our Japanese and travel skills
Shailer High at Disneyland in Japan
Navigating the big bustling train stations and buying their own tickets.
Enjoying awesome exhibits at the future museum in Tokyo.
Culture, fashion and technology in Tokyo, including visits to Kawaii Monster Cafe and Owl Cafe Akiba Fukurou.
3-hour train journey from the heart of Tokyo to the hills of Mt Fuji. A big trek with bags to the hotel and then a well-earned afternoon of relaxing.
Another rainy theme park day for our Japan Trip. Staff and students surged ahead and went on some of the highest, fastest and bendiest rides in the world at Fuji-Q Highland Park. They really enjoyed the short visit at Fuji.
Another rainy day on Japan. We caught three trains including a bullet train, which took us from Kawaguchiko (near Mt Fuji) to Kyoto. We then had a lovely bus tour checking out three cultural sites including the Golden Pavilion and Atherton famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove where many movies have been filmed. We ended the day with a traditional Japanese hot pot.
From Kyoto to Hiroshima. It was a moving experience to visit Hiroshima’s Peace Park and Atom Bomb Museum. Students learnt a lot about the importance of peace and people getting along.

Special Guest Dr Luke Lloyd-Jones
This week, students at Shailer were lucky enough to have Dr Luke Lloyd-Jones, from IMB - the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, UQ speak to them about his experiences studying in different fields of Mathematics. He is a highly respected and awarded expert in his field with international recognition.
Dr Luke has a wealth of knowledge in Mathematics and his own experiences have provided him with opportunities to work in fields of applied and theoretical mathematics, with a current focus in statistics and its applications in genetics.
Dr Luke was able to present to our Year 7, 8 and 9 NEXUS students, along with a selection of Year 10 students who will be enrolled in higher level Maths in the new senior next year. The presentation introduced students to some real world applications for Mathematics and some of the jobs they can consider in the future.

Wonder of Science Competition
From some of our Nexus Students...
Luckily, we were chosen along with another year 7, 8 and 9 group to represent Shailer Park State High School at the Wonder of Science regional tournament at Griffith University.
As students of Shailer Park State High School, we were all determined to go by the schools policies and morals. This was demonstrated by the group’s relational and resilient skills. Each member asked positive and constructive questions to benefit other groups as well as themselves. We used our resilience when we had technical difficulties in our first presentation and we bounced back on the second round. Being able to present again gave us the opportunity to reflect and improve our result, which ended up with us taking out first place.
We look forward to representing Shailer at the state conference in November.
Big thanks to Mr Simpson and Miss Mullen for their help over the past term.

Health and Physical Education
Term 4 is traditionally a busy time of year as the Health and Physical Education department celebrates all students who have participated and achieved in their respective sporting pursuits across the year. The 2018 Sports Breakfast will be held on Wednesday morning October 24, as we join together to congratulate all our sports men and women who have been invited.
Junior HPE
It is also a busy time in our classrooms this term. Our junior HPE classes are, by now, well underway interacting with the term 4 HPE curriculum. This term our year 7s have the practical theme of ‘Shoots and Scores’ and each class will hone their related skills in two practical activities across the term, whilst in theory, the focus is on ‘Approaching Adolescence’. Likewise, the year 8s will interact with various ballgames and ball sports across this term and explore certain aspects of identity within their theory component. Our year 9s begin the term with a six week theory unit that focuses on mental health and will be given the opportunity to engage in some really meaningful conversations around this issue.
Senior Recreation Studies and Physical Education
Moving to our senior Physical Education subjects sees our year 10 students analysing the concept of access within the community as they interact with survey data around this. The year 11 Recreation students are busy working on their personal fitness programs and our 11 and 12 Physical Education students are diligently continuing work in their respective programs to ensure they will be ready to complete assessment later in the term.

Library
New term, new look! No, not the library staff! With a little bit of thoughtful and imaginative inspiration and planning, the library has been transformed into a more spacious and appealing learning and interactive environment. A dedicated computer hub has been established as well as a laptop lounge with funky furniture, which has proved popular with all age groups and for varying activities. More renovations are being planned in the future, so watch this space.
Reading continues to grow to new heights with the borrowing rates increasing considerably throughout the year. We have listened to our clients by ensuring to purchase books that are in demand, requested and current. There are only two more book borrowers’ draws for 2018, so students need to ensure their chance of winning a $20 voucher by selecting a book or magazine to take home.
Happy Reading

A message from the Business Manager
Dear Parents/Caregivers, here at SPSHS we operate a Student Resource Scheme that enables parents to enter into an agreement with the school, that for an annual participation fee we provide the temporary use of prescribed textbooks and/or other resources, and/or the purchase of consumables and materials for students to use in class. In accordance with the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, the cost of providing instruction, administration and facilities for the education of students enrolled at State schools is met by the state. Parents/Caregivers are directly responsible for providing textbooks and other personal resources for their children. Below is our schools chart of outstanding school fees.
As you can clearly see from the below chart we have many families who have still not paid their agreed participation fee and therefore we have not been able to supply all students with all the resources required for effective learning. Please note that unpaid fees from previous years need to be promptly paid.
There are numerous ways to make payments including
- Direct Deposit BSB 064 170 Acc# 00090123
- In person at our finance window with cash or card between 8.00am – 3.30pm, Monday to Friday
- Credit card payment can be accepted via BPOINT on 1300 631 073 by quoting your CRN and invoice number as this is listed as an option on the invoices.
Thank you to all those families who are up to date with their payments.
Excursion Fees
NO late payments will be accepted for excursions after the due date (generally 1 week prior to excursion). All school fees and other payments must be up to date, paid in full, or payment plan in place; otherwise students risk losing excursion and/or academy privileges.

Building Fund
The main purpose of the P&C is to support the school for the benefit of all students. The P&C maintains a close relationship with the school executive and will work with them to improve the experience of all students, teachers and staff at Shailer Park State High School. We continue to raise funds via our tax-deductable Building Fund and by making grant applications. Funds are directed towards our major common goal, which is to air-condition all teaching spaces in the school.
If you are interested in making a Tax Deductable donation or have some other building type works contribution please contact pandc@shaiparkshs.eq.edu.au or attend a meeting, held on the 3rd Tuesday each month at 6pm. We would love to hear from you.

Community Support Program
Collaboration with local business to provide more resources for our students...thank you to all those who mentioned Shailer Park State High School when making purchases from Stellarossa. Our P&C will be receiving the kickback donations at the end of each month to assist our students.
Shailer High is now collaborating with local coffee business, Stellarossa Hyperdome. The support program is providing the school with vouchers that will be used as incentives and rewards for staff and students. The program also involves a kickback scheme when our community makes purchases in store. We envision this raising more funds to be directed to benefit all students.
I am pleased to announce that the team at Stellarossa Loganholme Hyperdome have offered Shailer Park High this opportunity to participate in a Community Support Program.
When paying for meals or drinks at Stellarossa, please mention that you are from Shailer Park High. Your invoice details will be recorded and Shailer Park High P&C will then receive a donation. The donated amounts will be totalled and sent monthly for P&C to use the funds to assist our school community.
All students involved were informed via notices to attend a meeting with HPE staff
Stellarossa is located near Bakers Delight at the Aldi/Coles end of the Hyperdome shopping centre and is open from
7-5pm Monday to Friday,
7- 4.30pm Saturday &
7.30-4pm Sunday.
Come on down and try their tasty breakfasts, salads, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, coffee and drinks.
