A message from the Principal

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope everyone in our community had a relaxing break and an opportunity to recharge their batteries, returning to Shailer Park State High School refreshed and ready to learn. I certainly enjoyed the break and spent some valuable time with my family in the beautiful autumn weather and outdoors.

I’m very proud of the way in which our students have returned to Shailer Park SHS: the term has started smoothly with a calm and focussed energy pervading the school. We are into the business of learning swiftly, ready to tackle those big plans and bold ambitions our students are more than capable of achieving.

Over the past month, students have continued to represent our school with pride, humility and respect. In particular, I would like to congratulate Yevin Samararatne, who was selected to carry the Queen’s Baton Relay at the Commonwealth Games in Beenleigh on April 1st. Hopefully many of you had the opportunity to witness this significant event and perhaps even attend some of the Games’ competitions. Our commemoration of ANZAC Day was also another opportunity for our students to display their sense of pride in our country and acknowledge the kinds of values we aspire to. It truly makes me proud to have our students participate in these kinds of prominent events where they represent Shailer Park SHS in a manner our entire community can be proud of!

As a community, we must all be invested in supporting our young people to achieve their absolute best, and as such, I’d like to thank all staff, parents, guardians and students for their engagement in the recent parents/teacher conferences. These opportunities for staff, teachers and parents to meet make a significant and positive impact on student learning, enabling us to truly partner together to ensure all students reach their full potential. In particular, I would like to thank our Dean of Studies, Miss Anita Winkeler for her organisation of the event as well as our dedicated teaching team who commit generous time prior to the conferences to plan and collate evidence of students’ learning to share with our parents and guardians.

As a parent, I recognise the value of strong communication between school and home: effective, nurturing education for our children must logically involve a partnership between parents, staff and teachers. I am very keen to explore ways with which Shailer Park SHS can enhance and improve how we collaborate with parents, facilitate the best possible educational outcomes for our students and continue to grow our strong reputation in the community. It is also that time of year when our Year 7 and 9 students participate in the annual NAPLAN tests. In 2018 the tests will be held over three days in Week 5 of this term (Tuesday 16-Thursday 18 May). There is always a lot of media build up surrounding NAPLAN and I’d like to remind parents and students that this is not a pass or fail type of test, but rather a snapshot of a student’s progress over time and a curriculum health check for us as a school. While these tests are important in this manner, I would encourage all of our students to simply do their best, use the results as an opportunity to reflect on the distance travelled in their learning, set goals for future improvement and importantly, celebrate their strengths and areas of growth. As a school, we will continue to use the evidence gathered through the NAPLAN tests to strengthen our curriculum and our teaching practice to support our students to succeed.

We have several new teaching staff who have joined us this term and I would like to take the opportunity to introduce: Mr Scott Cox (Physics/Math Teacher), Miss Zeenat Hussain (English/Humanities Teacher), Mr Tom Corkery (English/Humanities Teacher) and Miss Hannah Receveur (General Teacher).

In particular, I would like to welcome our new Deputy Principal, Mr Norman Gill. Mr Gill comes to us with a career spanning 26 years in education and is an Australia Day Award Recipient for recognition for service to engagement of students at academic level and in extra-curricular levels. As an experienced Deputy Principal, he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and we are excited to have him join our team.

Finally, I am very excited to return this term as the permanently appointed Principal of this wonderful school. I am very appreciative of the support and congratulations many of you in our community have taken the time to share with me. I certainly look forward to using my previous leadership experience in the highest performing state school in Queensland to continue to strengthen Shailer Park SHS, ensuring all students have a bright future achieving their big plans and bold ambitions!

A message from our Community Engagement Deputy Principal

Shailer High is proud to announce the appointment of a third deputy Principal, Mr. Norman Gill. Mr. Gill comes with a career spanning 26 years and is an Australia Day Award Recipient in 2014 for recognition for service to engagement of students at academic level and in extra-curricular levels. Mr. Gill has an open-door policy and strongly believes that student success is connected to positive, respectful engagement with parents, care-givers and guardians.

“I have an ‘open-door’ policy and have the strong belief and value that student success is connected to positive, respectful engagement with parents, care-givers and guardians. It is a TEAM effort to help support and educate the youth of today”.

Mr Gill is a local, Logan resident and prior to commencing at Shailer Park SHS was in Miles SHS for 3 years. Previous to this was 13 years at Kingston State College.

Mr. Gill will be concentrating his efforts at Shailer on our ‘Positive behavior for Learning’ program and forging strong relationships with students and families.

A Message from our Dean of Studies

Getting Organised

Prior planning prevents poor performance. Being organised, using a calendar and diary to help plan when assessment is due and organising time every day to do school work – little and often – really are strategies that can help you achieve. Assessment plans have been emailed to all students so that they can organise their learning be resourceful learners!

Mentoring

Students, do you know what you want to do once you leave school? The greatest way of achieving your goal is to HAVE a goal!

Teachers and guidance/industry staff will be working with students throughout the year to ensure you have identified your goal and have a clear strategy of achieving it.

Year 11 and 12 students – all year!
Year 10 students – Term 2 in preparation for SET Plan (and subject selection).
Senior Students should be thinking of their goals and pathway options in preparation for these meetings!

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher interviews were a huge success last week. Thank you to all parents and students who attended these conversations, and for making time for receiving feedback and information on how to improve. Conversations and time invested in students that are productive and positive will help our students to continue to grow and develop academically.

At Shailer Park High School, we value resourcefulness and reflectiveness. This means that students find effective ways to overcome challenges and are ready, willing and able to learn in different ways. Being reflective means that our students are strategic about learning, and plan, revise and think about what they can do to continue to improve. It also allows our staff to check in on how they support, stretch and challenge our learners. Conversations that were had at Parent/Teacher night continue to create these opportunities for our students to reflect and grow.

A word from our Student Leaders

This newsletter we hear from our Vice Captains Paul Thomas and Deina-Jean Maangi.

Hi, my name is Paul Thomas and I am honoured to be one of the vice school captains of Shailer Park State High School. From my first year of attending this school way back when I was in grade 8, I knew that I wanted to be on the school’s leadership team in my senior year. I’ve always loved working with people, and public speaking. We have great teachers who are always willing to give up their time to help improve our results. There is also a large variety of CAST activities that can be fun and educational. This year the leaders have been working hard to make sure that the following year is educational, eventful and fun. We have just finished our first fundraiser for the school year, a valentine’s love letter and chocolate delivery service which was wildly successful. This helped us learn valuable skills about organising events. We are currently working on ideas for Bullying No Way! Day 2018.

Throughout the years of my high school life, I've had the privilege of representing our school in so many extra-curricular activities and events. A few of my favorites have been:

  • being a speaker at YMCA Youth Parliament (2017),
  • playing in the instrumental music program (under the direction of Mr. Glen Court and Mrs. Diane Alley)
  • winning first place at Logan Idol (2017).

I encourage every student to participate in as many activities as they can while they have the chance. Not only is it about representing your school, but it's also a great chance to meet new people and it's a lot of fun!

Queens Baton Relay - Commonwealth Games Experience

On the 1st of April I had a prestigious opportunity to represent my school, my friends, my family and my country by carrying the Queens Baton also known as the ‘Baton Barer’. It was an unbelievable experience as all my friends and family came to cheer me on as this lifted the spirit of the games. It was great to see the faces of many people were happy and enjoying such a great day. The day for me wasn’t just running a baton but is was to show that anyone can achieve their dreams as long as they persist towards it and never give up. Overall it was a fantastic day and one to remember.

Social Media

Social media has dramatically changed the way we communicate, and there are a lot of benefits to it. We have access to unlimited information; we can share with others things that matter to us. However research is clearly making a link between the heavy mobile phone usage and poor mental health.

Most young people now have a mobile phone. However we need to remember that these are not just phones – they do much more than just make phone calls. They are a mini-computer which has 24 hours access to the internet which is instant.

A longitudinal study of 1,101 Australian high school students aged between 13 and 16 found poor-quality sleep associated with late-night texting or calling was linked to a decline in mental health, such as depressed moods, declines in self-esteem and coping ability.

There are three main factors when it comes to why the overuse of social media can negatively impact on the mental health of young people:

1. Impact on Sleep

Heavy usage can have a negative impact on physical well-being which in turn can affect mental health. This is particularly relevant when it comes to sleep disturbance. Several studies have linked sleep difficulties to screen time.

A recent study on phone use showed that sstudents in Year 8 who use their mobile phones at night-time have higher levels of depressive moods, behavior issues and lower self-esteem. Teenagers need eight to ten hours sleep per night for healthy development. Phones disturb sleep in two ways, with the bright light from screen disrupting natural circadian rhythms and messages received before sleep spiking “cognitive and emotional arousal” which inhibit sleep.

If you are finding your son or daughter is more moody and not coping at school it may be more than just normal adolescent behavior it could be as simple as them not sleeping at night.

Whether it’s the blue light of screens affecting sleep quality and quantity or the behavioural disturbances that make young people wake to check their phones reduced sleep is an important issue when it comes to mental health. Sleep is crucial for the developing adolescent brain, and lack of sleep is associated with lower mood and depression.

2. Use as life comparing tool

While social media was initially set up as means of connecting with others it is now also used as a means of comparing. It has become a barometer of how we measure up to others and this is a particular issue for young people who are socialized through the school system to ‘grade’ themselves in relation to their peers.

As a consequence many of the longitudinal studies done in this area suggest that we are increasingly engaging in “passive use” of social media- this is where we look at other people’s pictures and lives and compare them to our own- and it is bad for our mental health.

The nature of social media is such that most people present the highlights of their lives more regularly than the boring stuff so these highlights appear to be the norm. Indeed we tend to post when we are on a high and surf other people’s pages when we are on a low, so the differential between our real lives and the idealized lives we see on screen is further amplified leading us to feel like we can’t measure up and that we are missing out. This can impact mental well-being making one feel inferior and inadequate.

3. Chasing likes on post to drive self-worth / self-esteem

Being too active on Social media and worrying about regularly posting pictures and status updates has been linked to anxiety, poor body image and diminished mental health. The constant seeking of approval from others and searching for external validation means that young people don’t develop a secure sense of self that isn’t dependant on arbitrary conditions of worth.

This preoccupation with how other people react to what we post on social media can lead young people to feel unsure about their value. They may start to worry about how they are seen, making them more self-critical of both their physical appearance and their lives in general. Constant posting may also open them up to receiving more negative or mean comments on line, rather than compliments or praise. Potentially they may be more at risk of being cyberbullied if they are constantly online.

Advice to parents around coping with the Phones/Internet

Michael Carr-Gregg a leading Adolescent Psychologists he has stated that “Parents need to find their digital spine. Just because your children are pestering you, and because everybody else is on it, doesn’t mean you can’t stand your ground.”

Tips for Parents:

Negotiate clear rules and boundaries before your child is allowed to have a phone

A condition of having a phone or other device should be that you will have access to it; know their passwords and regularly check what is on it

Phones and other digital devices should not be accessible to young people at night time. Decide on a hand-in time 7.00pm until 7.00am – this guarantees that your child has a break from the internet and is free from any risk of cyberbullying. All devices including yours should be collected and put in an area out of access for that period of time.

Model good digital habits yourself. (One should be able to survive without constantly looking at technology). Remember the old saying ‘Actions speak louder than words.”

Talk to your son/daughter about what they are doing online with their phones and actively engage with them on their sites. Show a genuine interest in what they are doing online.

Ignorance of the Cyber world is no excuse. Access information from reputable websites to seek out help and information about the latest internet trends.

Encourage your children to spend real face to face time with their friends. A time where they talk to each other without looking at their phones.

Know what sites they visit and talk to your children about their online experiences as well as their face to face interactions

ANZAC DAY SERVICE

ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. Before ANZAC day, we had a service at School to honour not only those who have fallen in battle but also those who have served Australia and New Zealand in areas of conflict throughout the world.

Student Resourcefulness

To build student capacity in their resourcefulness, students have been engaged in weekly activities and discussions centred around what makes a person resourceful, what attributes do resourceful people have and what support can I access to help me become resourceful. The school diary is foundation of this process as it is critical in supporting student’s organisation as well as becoming a useful communication tool between school and home.

Student Health and Nutrition

Active, growing children require good nutrition to build healthy bodies and to help them be the best they can be. Staff have noticed an increased amount of students bringing energy drinks and other high processed foods/drinks which can contribute toward poor focus in the classroom. As parents we can help our children build healthy foundations by encouraging a love of good food and good nutrition throughout these years.

An eating pattern that includes a variety of foods from across the food groups will provide children with the range of nutrients and fuel they need.

To be their best, children also need to be well hydrated. Children should be encouraged to drink water rather than sweetened drinks such as soft drinks, cordials and fruit juice. Our school tuck shop contains a range of healthy eating options for all of our students and as a school community, we strive to support students in making better food choices to improve their academic performance and overall health.

Year 11 & 12 ‘Step Up’

Welcome back to term two, I do hope that your son/daughter is refreshed and ready for another great term. As always, attendance is of utmost importance and I thank you all for working with us to ensure that your son/daughter is in full attendance at all times. A gentle reminder that if there needs to be an absence due to illness or extenuating circumstances, could you please make contact with our administration so this may be documented. Full and correct school uniform is expected at all times.

In the final week of term one we ran our very first Step Up! Program. What a fantastic two days it was! The two days saw our year 11 and 12 students participate in a range of activities that challenged them both individually and as a group. It was absolutely fantastic to see students working together in such a productive manner while having a whole lot of fun at the same time. Day one saw students work in groups in an amazing race style format to complete challenges, and then later worked as one large group to try and conquer the 3500 domino challenge. If students could set them all up and have them systematically knocked over one by one within a 30 minute time frame, Damon, (facilitator), promised pizza for all. For about 26 minutes it looked like his wallet was going to take a large hit! Heartbreakingly however, with only a few minutes to go disaster struck – and that was the end of pizza! While students didn’t get the tangible reward, their resilience in dealing with the outcome was to be commended, their reward was so much more! Day two saw everyone continue with the wonderful work from the day before down at Palm Beach where they participated in a number of different water activities, the most popular by far being stand up paddle boarding! This fantastic program facilitated by the Character Builders team certainly focussed on the development of our senior students around the Four R’s that we actively encourage – to be resilient, resourceful, relational and reflective. Congratulations to all those students who participated.

Hi, my name is Sumaya Lane and I’m new to the Shailer Park team. Very excited to part of the school and looking forward to many years ahead. I have been teaching for more than 16 years and during this times I’ve had the pleasure of teaching all grades from prep to year 12 with a vast variety of teaching areas (If you can name it I’ve probably taught it!). My lifelong passion is dance, which is why I’m immersing myself in the Dance Academy program here at Shailer. Having said that I’ve been blessed with wonderful English and humanities classes to start 2018 and my time at Shailer and for that I am truly grateful. I hope to see you at one of the wider community events held at Shailer. Cheers for now.

I’m Mrs Hussain, not only am I new to Shailer Park but I am also new to Queensland. I am a trained Social Science teacher and have been teaching in New South Wales over the past 5 years. I have experience teaching junior Humanities, senior Business and Legal Studies. I’ll be teaching some of these subjects at Shailer Park and am really excited to get to know the students and staff. In my first week I have already felt a sense of community and togetherness amongst staff and students. NEXUS Academy

Last Term our Year 7 NEXUS students had the opportunity to apply their scientific knowledge and inquiry in a real world setting. Students from the academy visited Skinners Park to collect and test the quality of the water from the Logan River. Whilst students were at the site, they got to engage with a representative from the Logan City Council, who was also completing tests on the river. Students will now begin the process of analysing and evaluating the quality of the water as part of an integrated inquiry project for Science and Geography.

Thank you to Mr Simpson, Ms Mullen and Ms Hendrikx for your work in organising such a valuable learning experience. Well done students for applying your knowledge and representing Shailer High.

Creative Industries

Creative Generation - State Schools on Stage

This year, Shailer Park's Creative Industries department sees its strongest representation at Creative Generation, with all 8 students who auditioned, successfully earning a place within the cast.

These students, 7 from our Ignite Dance Academy and 1 from our Instrumental Music program, participated in a gruelling audition process over a number of weekends. They, along with over 1500 other state school students from prep to year 12, will work tirelessly with industry professionals next term, to produce a stage spectacular which will be performed 4 times at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

We congratulate you students on your resilience and determination and look forward to seeing you light up the stage in July.

IGNITE Dance Academy

Congratulations to Hayley Welch and Paige Guttenbeil (year 8) for successfully auditioning for Harvest Rain Theatre Companies production of Grease - The Arena Spectacular.

Similarly to our Creative Generation students, Hayley and Paige participated in an intense audition process which saw both students offered a position in the Grease amateur mass ensemble, which they have both now happily accepted.

Over the next 15 weeks, students will participate in intense rehearsals which will prepare them for their performances in July at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Congratulations students, this is a wonderful achievement and will be an amazing experience for you both.

Students are catering to breakfast AND coffee needs of staff who come down to the Sapphires onsite restaurant between 7:45am – 8:45am, offering a selection of breakfast options from fluffy pancakes, warm breakie boxes and hot coffees made to order.

This term, the Year 10 Graphics class is currently working on their Built Environment Assessment. This major assessment piece involves the class researching and collaborating in order to build an entire city. Each student is given a block of land, which they must research, design, sketch and 3D model a building of their choice. The students individual block of land and building will be joined together to form our city. At this stage, the class is working on their research phase of the assignment.

Hard Work and a Love of Boats Pays Off!

Congratulations to Zack who today signed up with Springwood Marine as a School Based Apprentice to become a Marine Mechanic, undertaking a Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology.

Zack has been working towards this for the last two years, first doing a Certificate II Marine Technology at TAFE Ashmore, followed by work experience with Springwood Marine. It’s great to see his hard work and dedication pay off and thanks to Springwood Marine for supporting him along his journey and giving him this opportunity.

STING Volleyball Academy

We have had an extremely busy last 2 weeks in the Shailer Park SHS Volleyball World. Our students have been partaking in numerous tournaments all around Queensland.

Pacific Rivers District Volleyball Championship

Last week we had our Pacific Rivers District Volleyball championship days. This is our Gala Sporting day for the year where we play all of the other schools in our district for the battle to become the District Champions and move forward to the Gold Coast Finals and Metropolitan Finals Competitions.

Last week we had our Pacific Rivers District Volleyball championship days. This is our Gala Sporting day for the year where we play all of the other schools in our district for the battle to become the District Champions and move forward to the Gold Coast Finals and Metropolitan Finals Competitions.

On the 6th March we had the Boys Pacific Rivers Championship Day where we sent 4 teams off to this competition. All Boys teams played really well with 3 of our Teams coming home with the Premiership.

Boys District Champion Teams: Open Boys, Year 10 Boys & Year 9 Boys.

Special Mention to our Year 7 Boys who were Runners Up after having to play in the Year 8 as there is a combined Year 7/8 division. The year 7’s beat all the other year 8 teams in their pool until they hit the final.

Pacific Rivers Championship Day

On the 11th of March it was our Girls turn to defend our District Titles at their Pacific Rivers Championship Day. We sent 5 teams off this time and our girls did us extremely proud. Our Girls took out all of the 4 divisions with our Year 7 Girls being knocked out by our Year 8 Girls in the Semi-final. Girls District Champion Teams: Open Girls, Year 10 Girls & Year 9 Girls.

Enable cup volleyball competition.

Next up our Open Teams played in the enable cup volleyball competition. This is a competition between our local High Schools in our Enable District which includes schools such as Marsden, Springwood, Beenleigh, Woodridge, Flagstone, Beaudesert just to name a few. Our Open teams were a mix of experienced senior players and a few up and coming juniors which was very exciting for our program. We had several year 9 and 10 players battling it out in this Year 12 competition. Both our Girls and Boys Teams held their own and finished with a very commendable 3rd Place after just going down in both their semi-finals on a very close match. Well done to all of our talented students and wonderful teachers that assisted in the night.

Queensland Beach Schools Cup Volleyball Tournament

The Queensland Beach Schools Cup Volleyball Tournament on 11th and 12th March. This year there were 25 schools, 21 courts, 160 teams and 500+ Players that attended this State Tournament.

Shailer Park was represented by 3 senior pair’s teams who played up to 5 games a day in the rain, sun and crazy wind elements. Our students did a fantastic job, and played some great Volleyball.

A few highlights from the State Champs...

- Bayley & Sam were knocked out of the Semi's by the team that won it. Our boys were the only ones to take a set off them, which consisted of a team that had a National Indoor and Beach player.

-Jayde & Alissa (a year 9 student) played in the Open Girls and were knocked out of the semis by the team that won bronze. The Open girl’s team that won the tournament are the current Australian U/17 National Beach Champions. So the standard was incredibly high.

It was a very successful 2 days and our students made our school very proud!

STING Futsal Academy

Term one saw the Futsal Academy commence formal training on a Tuesday and Thursday morning at InSports Cornubia and compete in the prestigious SEQ Futsal Titles. This is one of the biggest carnivals in the country and our nine teams acquitted themselves incredibly well, with two teams (U12 and U16), making it through to the finals competition. At this event the U12 team was knocked out in the first round but the U16 progressed to the quarter finals losing a very close game to Canterbury College but gained entry to the Champion of Champion series to be held in July. This was an amazing achievement by the team and bodes well for other competitions later this year.

As a result of their outstanding play and conduct during these carnivals, 10 players were selected in QLD Futsal teams.

Five of these players were from our Year 7 cohort who have made an impressive start to their sporting careers at Shailer Park SHS. Well done!

Term 2 sees a number of teams competing in the Pacific District Soccer competition as well as preparing for the upcoming Coomera Cup. Competitive friendlies are currently being organised with other schools. These events will serve to develop our competitive game play and provide further opportunities for our players to compete, have fun and represent the school.

I’d like to publically thank the P&C Association and the sporting subcommittee for their ongoing support and in particular the efforts of Eric Perez. Jarrod Baker the Head of HPE, the school coaching staff and administration team are integral to our student’s success and I am greatly appreciative of their support and assistance.

Messages from our Parents and Citizen

Woolworths Earn and Learn

Thank you to the P&C, Woolworths and our community for supporting the Woollies Earn and Learn fundraising program. Shailer High Sports department received two full boxes of sports gear for our school. Some of our year 9 students, Abbey, Jordan, Aidan, Alecz and Sharna, were enthusiastic to see what we received.

Coles Sports for Schools

Thank you to everyone who collected the Coles Sports for Schools tokens. If you have any more of these could you please get them in to the office as soon as possible so we can send them off before 15 June. We look forward to sharing with you what the School receives for our students.

Lean Cluster concert

Our next fundraising event will be the Lean Cluster concert on Friday 22nd June. This event will involve students, teachers, parents and music support volunteers. We will be hosting a sausage sizzle with other hot food. The lean cluster concert is the presentation of new skills and music learned at the workshops during the week prior and has been a successful event in the past.
