Student Voice
Meet some of our dedicated Student Leadership Committee (SLC) members! They are committed to giving back to our school community through fundraising initiatives and supporting the school’s purpose and vision. The committee meets weekly to align their efforts, share ideas, and strengthen student voice across the school.
Hi, I’m Mirabel, and I am a Year 9 representative in SPSHS’s Student Leadership Team. My role is to raise the Year 9 cohort’s student voice and promote engagement within our school and in the community. I act as an advocate for students, helping to communicate our ideas, concerns, and suggestions at our weekly meetings where we plan several events, fundraisers and share our opinions around decisions for our school. When working with other student leaders, I aim to create a positive environment where everyone feels valued, in order to achieve our full potential as a group. In my role, my goal is to ensure that the opinions of Year 9 students are represented and considered in decisions that affect us, and support initiatives that make our school a better place for all students!
Hi, I am Brody Haling, the year 11 representative for the Student Leadership Committee at Shailer Park State High School. Our meeting consists of informative, creative and supportive ideas to make the school a better place. This consists of but is not limited to event fundraising, where we raise money for the school through events such as the Colour Run.
As a year level representative there are plenty of opportunities to input your ideas and contributions to the discussion with the seniors, teachers and other admin team such as the Principal Ms Herbert.
Hi, my name is Gabrielle Hill, I am the 2025 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leader. I am the voice for the wants and needs of First Nations students at Shailer Park High School and help them feel recognised and heard.
Part of my role is helping run and organise events like NAIDOC week and speaking to others about important dates relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history like National Sorry Day.
Year 7 Camp – Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre
Last week, our Year 7 students took part in an exciting and rewarding camp at the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre. Across several action-packed days, students took part in a variety of exciting activities, including paddle boarding, the Amazing Race, Survivor-style challenges, beach games, and archery. Each activity was designed to challenge students and help them develop important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication. Most importantly, students learned how to collaborate and connect with a wide range of peers in their year level.
Despite the chilly weather, with cold mornings and evenings, spirits remained high. Night-time activities like a dance night and movie night helped everyone stay warm and enjoy the camp experience even more. A standout highlight for many students was the food — which received plenty of positive feedback and added to the fun atmosphere of camp life.
A big thank you goes to all the staff who gave up their own time to support our students and this special school event; Miss King, Mrs Carroll, Miss Stones, Mr Wilkins, Mr Mientjes, Mr Noke and Ms Davies.
Year 7 Camp 2025 was a great success! We hope parents enjoyed the daily photos and action shots shared on our Shailer Park State High School Facebook page.

Understanding Anxiety: Helping Teens Show Up and Stay Engaged
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons students start missing school, and it can be surprisingly hard to spot. What may look like defiance, laziness, or even illness is often anxiety in disguise. For teenagers, the feelings of dread, panic, or perfectionism that come with anxiety can make school feel overwhelming. The video “Fight Flight Freeze – Anxiety Explained For Teens”can help you understand how anxiety impacts teens in less than 3 minutes! You can watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpolpKTWrp4&t=156s
Top Tips for Parents and Carers:
Validate their feelings. Avoid saying “just get over it” — instead try, “I can see this is hard, and I’m here to help.”
Stick to routines. Consistency builds safety. Even if your teen is struggling, help them stay in the rhythm of attending school.
Don’t avoid the trigger. While it’s tempting to let them stay home “just this once,” repeated avoidance can reinforce fear and increase anxiety.
Work with the school. Reach out to the student services team — early partnership makes a huge difference.
Anxiety doesn’t have to mean long-term absence. With the right support, teens can learn to face their fears, build resilience, and return to learning with confidence.

Education and Career Planning (ECP) Day - Wednesday 13th August
Our 2025 Education and Careers Planning (ECP) Day is fast approaching and our whole-school preparations are well underway.
ECP Day is a significant investment in our commitment to ensuring every student is known, supported and equipped to make informed decisions about their future. These conversations are vital in helping students see the relevance of their learning, plan meaningful pathways and strengthen partnerships between school and home.
This year’s ECP Day will run from 8:00am to 6:00pm on Wednesday 13 August 2025, with appointments scheduled across the following windows:
Please note that there will be some appointment availability between 8am – 9am.
8.00am* – 10.30am
11.00am – 1.00pm
2.00pm – 6.00pm
As per last year, student attendance on the day is not required, other than for their ECP Day interview. However, parents and carers will have the option to register their child for supervised study in the library during the day. This space will be staffed by our teacher aides and offered as a support to families who require supervision for their child during normal school hours (8.50am – 2.55pm). Parents/carers can book their child into this supervised study option here. Please be aware that our tuckshop will not be open on this day so students will need to bring enough food and water for both lunch breaks. Missed an Exam/Assignment Because You Were Sick? Here’s What to Do
If you’ve been unwell and couldn’t complete an exam or assessment, you might be eligible for an AARA, this stands for Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Let Your Teacher Know As soon as you know you’re unwell or unable to complete your assessment, tell your teacher in person or via email.
Step 2: Fill Out an AARA Form Grab the AARA application form HERE, fill it out, and hand it in at Student Services.
Step 3: Provide Proof You’ll need to attach a medical certificate or documentation from a registered health professional (not related to you or working at the school). This must include:
Your diagnosis and the date you were unwell
How it affected your ability to complete the assessment
Any recommended support or adjustments
Once you’ve submitted everything, the Guidance Officer will review your application and let you know the outcome.
You won’t be approved for an AARA if:
You submit it late without valid evidence
You simply forgot the due date
You don’t provide any documentation
AARAs are in place to support students when unexpected things happen — but you need to act quickly and follow the correct steps. If you’re unsure, speak to your teacher or pop into Student Services for help.
Creating a USI – Supporting Your Learning Journey
At Shailer Park State High, we’re committed to making sure every student is supported in their learning pathway, whether that’s university, TAFE, apprenticeships or entering the workforce. As part of this, every student needs to have aUnique Student Identifier (USI). Sports Academy Semester 1 Update
Futsal Academy – Semester 1 Wrap-Up
The start to the year has seen a fantastic period of growth, development, and on-field success for our Futsal Academy squads. Our students have shown a high level of commitment which has translated into impressive performances across various competitions. In theVeto SFL, our teams have delivered strong results:
U14s are equal top of the ladder after six competitive rounds (3 rounds remaining).
U16s are just two points outside the top three heading into GD3 next term.
Open Boys finished an impressive 2nd in the league and went on to place 3rd on Champions Day.
District Competitions
Year 7 Boys Development Team and Open Boys were crowned District Rivers Champions
The most pleasing part has been our girls' and boys' squads demonstrating a strong dedication to improving their skills and building a positive, connected team culture. Looking forward a big second half of the year!
Netball Academy - Semester 1 Wrap-Up
2025 saw the launch of Shailer Park State High School’s very own netball academy. There has always remained a keen interest in netball at the school and whilst we have maintained a strong participation in the sport by operating as a C.A.S.T program, it was so rewarding to all involved to be named as a sporting academy for this year.
In Term 1, we took part in the Southern Conference hosted by Flagstone State High School, entering two Year 7/8 Junior teams and two Year 9–12 Senior teams. Our teams performed exceptionally well, showcasing strong dominance throughout the competition, with three out of four teams finishing the day undefeated.
In Term 2, the Netball Academy participated in two competitions — the INFQ (Indoor Netball) tournament at Ashmore Indoor Sports Centre and the Vicki Wilson Championship. For many of our players, the INFQ competition was their first experience with indoor netball, and they rose to the challenge with enthusiasm. Our Year 11/12 team placed 4th, the Year 9/10 team secured a solid 5th, and our mixed Year 7/8 team achieved an impressive 2nd place overall.
Basketball Academy - Semester 1 Wrap-Up
As we wrap up a busy and rewarding semester, it’s a great time to reflect on all we’ve achieved together, both on and off the court.
This term, our students showed outstanding commitment and sportsmanship across several competitions. We competed in Rivers Day with both Junior and Senior teams, and our Junior Secondary Boys (Years 9–10) advanced from the CBSQ Wildcard into the CBSQ Shield, an incredible accomplishment. Our Opens and 9/10 teams also kicked off their DBSL campaigns with great energy, proudly representing our school each week.
We’re especially proud of the boys competing at representative levels, your dedication and leadership continue to inspire. A big thank you also goes to the boys who volunteered their time for our election day BBQ fundraiser, helping cover registration costs for major tournaments.
A major highlight has been the launch of girls’ basketball training, with fantastic numbers and energy. Thank you to Ms Fiu for driving this exciting growth.
To all students, staff, coaches, and families, thank you for your ongoing support. Enjoy a well-earned break, and we look forward to even more success next term! It has been a good stepping stone leading into a busy Term 3.
Volleyball Academy - Semester 1 Wrap-Up
The Volleyball Academy has had a strong showing in semester 1, attending 2 major competitions with plenty more to come next term. I want to thank all parents and coaches for their support during the last 2 terms and am eager to continue showcasing our amazing students at upcoming state level events with the Volleyball Queensland Junior and Senior Schools Cup, Southern Conference friendly matches and Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in semester 2.
In semester 1, Shailer Park State High School Volleyball competed at both boys and girls Pacific District Rivers Day placing in the top 4 or higher for every team entered into the competition. Alongside this, our grade 9/10 students competed at the VQ Intermediate Schools Cup entering multiple teams across divisions and being challenged in division 1 for the first time in recent memory.
Extending our Academy into division 1 pushes our students to look to the next level and extending themselves. We have also had some Academy students and coaches find success in Volleyball outside of Shailer Park with students making representative squads for South Coast, Volleyball Queensland State Team, and club team representation.
Congratulationsto everyone in Semester 1 with their achievements and thank you for all your support. I look forward to continuing the hard work into semester 2!
We love to acknowledge and celebrate achievement at Shailer Park State High School, particularly when our students “make their mark!” Some wonderful Bright Spotsin 2025 are seen below. Follow our Facebook and Instagram pages for regular celebrations of our staff and students.

We recognise that each family has unique needs, and our approach to engagement is flexible and responsive to individual circumstances.
It has been a busy Term 2 for the P&C Association. The P&C Executive has been busy, working with the School Executive, to coordinate fundraising activities, to raise funds for various infrastructure upgrade projects and activities being conducted by the school, throughout the 2025 school year.
The P&C, in conjunction with the support of our advocate and Community Liaison, Nadine Noble, ran a Mother’s Day Raffle, which was supported by 31 local businesses, including;
The generous prize donations, provided by these local businesses, supported the P&C to successfully raised $1,000 towards one of the school infrastructure upgrade projects, to install a hard stand shade cover over the school handball court. We thank the community for your kind support of this annual raffle.
The P&C have been working closely with the school to increase the engagement with the school community, through conducting regular BBQ Fundraisers, to raise funds for various school activities. On Saturday 14th June, the P&C worked with the Student Leadership Council to host a Bunnings Loganholme Fundraiser BBQ, to raise funds to contribute toward the Year 12 Legacy Project. This BBQ fundraiser was a success, raising $935 funds, for this project.
New members are welcome to join us in our mission to support the school in delivering Excellence in Learning and Life for the students. We run virtual meetings in the third and ninth week of each school term. The meeting link is emailed to all members and pending members prior to each meeting. Please email us on: PandC@shailerparkshs.eq.edu.au if you are interested in becoming a member.
The next P&C Meeting is being held in Week 3 – Tuesday, 29th July 2025 and we look forward to connecting with our community then.
